Investigating the correlation between the frequency of using metacognitive reading strategies and non-routine problem solving successes in fifth grade students
The aim of this study is to examine the correlation between the frequency of using metacognitive reading strategy use and non-routine problem-solving achievements in fifth grade students. The study was conducted by using the correlational survey model, one of quantitative research methods. The participants of the study consisted of 308 fifth grade students who were studying in public schools in Istanbul and Ankara in 2017-2018 school year and were selected with convenient sampling method. The data of the study were gathered using the form for the frequency of using metacognitive reading strategy by the students and the non-routine problem solving achievement Test. In the study, the form for the frequency of using metacognitive reading strategy was applied in order to determine metacognitive reading strategies of the studies and on the following day, the achievement test including non-routine problems was then applied to the students. Simple Linear Regression Analysis and Pearson Product-Moments Correlation Analysis were used in the analysis of the data obtained in the study. According to the results of the study, there was a positive correlation between the frequency of using metacognitive reading strategy and non-routine problem-solving achievements in fifth grade students and metacognitive reading strategies were a predictor of non-routine problem-solving achievement. © 2018 by authors. Image based visual servoing using bitangent points applied to planar shape alignment
We present visual servoing strategies based on bitangents for aligning planar shapes. In order to acquire bitangents we use convex-hull of a curve. Bitangent points are employed in the construction of a feature vector to be used in visual control. Experimental results obtained on a 7 DOF Mitsubishi PA10 robot, verifies the proposed method
Positioning and trajectory following tasks in microsystems using model free visual servoing
In this paper, we explore model free visual servoing algorithms by
experimentally evaluating their performances for various tasks
performed on a microassembly workstation developed in our lab. Model
free or so called uncalibrated visual servoing does not need the
system calibration (microscope-camera-micromanipulator) and the
model of the observed scene. It is robust to parameter changes and
disturbances. We tested its performance in point-to-point
positioning and various trajectory following tasks. Experimental
results validate the utility of model free visual servoing in
microassembly tasks
A Presentation For The Automorphisms Of The 3-Sphere That Preserve A Genus Two Heegaard Splitting
Scharlemann constructed a connected simplicial 2-complex with an
action by the group of isotopy classes of orientation
preserving homeomorphisms of that preserve the isotopy class of an
unknotted genus 2 handlebody . In this paper we prove that the 2-complex
is contractible. Therefore we get a finite presentation of .Comment: Completely rewritten. 21 pages with 22 figure
Dynamic phase transition features of the cylindrical nanowire driven by a propagating magnetic field
Magnetic response of the spin- cylindrical nanowire to the propagating
magnetic field wave has been investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulation
method based on Metropolis algorithm. The obtained microscopic spin
configurations suggest that the studied system exhibits two types of dynamical
phases depending on the considered values of system parameters: Coherent
propagation of spin bands and spin-frozen or pinned phases, as in the case of
the conventional bulk systems under the influence of a propagating magnetic
field. By benefiting from the temperature dependencies of variances of dynamic
order parameter, internal energy and the derivative of dynamic order parameter
of the system, dynamic phase diagrams are also obtained in related planes for
varying values of the wavelength of the propagating magnetic field. Our
simulation results demonstrate that as the strength of the field amplitude is
increased, the phase transition points tend to shift to the relatively lower
temperature regions. Moreover, it has been observed that dynamic phase boundary
line shrinks inward when the value of wavelength of the external field
decreases.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
A fast algorithm for vision-based hand gesture recognition for robot control
We propose a fast algorithm for automatically recognizing a limited set of gestures from hand images for a robot control application. Hand gesture recognition is a challenging problem in its general form. We consider a fixed set of manual commands and a reasonably structured environment, and develop a simple, yet effective, procedure for gesture recognition. Our approach contains steps for segmenting the hand region, locating the fingers, and finally classifying the gesture. The algorithm is invariant to translation, rotation, and scale of the hand. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique on real imagery
Multiprocessor speed-up, Amdahl's Law, and the Activity Set Model of parallel program behavior
An important issue in the effective use of parallel processing is the estimation of the speed-up one may expect as a function of the number of processors used. Amdahl's Law has traditionally provided a guideline to this issue, although it appears excessively pessimistic in the light of recent experimental results. In this note, Amdahl's Law is amended by giving a greater importance to the capacity of a program to make effective use of parallel processing, but also recognizing the fact that imbalance of the workload of each processor is bound to occur. An activity set model of parallel program behavior is then introduced along with the corresponding parallelism index of a program, leading to upper and lower bounds to the speed-up
