Improved magic states distillation for quantum universality

Given stabilizer operations and the ability to repeatedly prepare a single-qubit mixed state rho, can we do universal quantum computation? As motivation for this question, "magic state" distillation procedures can reduce the general fault-tolerance problem to that of performing fault-tolerant stabilizer circuits. We improve the procedures of Bravyi and Kitaev in the Hadamard "magic" direction of the Bloch sphere to achieve a sharp threshold between those rho allowing universal quantum computation, and those for which any calculation can be efficiently classically simulated. As a corollary, the ability to repeatedly prepare any pure state which is not a stabilizer state (e.g., any single-qubit pure state which is not a Pauli eigenstate), together with stabilizer operations, gives quantum universality. It remains open whether there is also a tight separation in the so-called T direction.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

Uncovering the role of cross-border strategic alliances and expertise decision centralization in enhancing product-service innovation in MMNEs

    Get PDF
Research is needed on effective servitization by multinational enterprises. This study examines whether Manufacturing Multinational Enterprises (MMNEs) can obtain better servitization outcomes by partnering with Knowledge Intensive Business Service (KIBS) firms and or by internationalizing their service function. In addition, the paper analyses the centralization of management decisions of human resources as an organizational mechanism to overcome coordination failure between product and service units. Our primary research data contain survey responses from 285 MMNEs collected in cooperation with an industry partner. Results show that cross-border strategic alliances and expertise decision centralization are critical to enhance product-service innovation

Treballs Finals de Grau d'Enginyeria Informàtica, Facultat de Matemàtiques, Universitat de Barcelona, Any: 2019, Director: Sergio Escalera Guerrero[en] In medium to large projects, monitoring and organizing services begins to be important, since it increases the scalability and contributes to the detection of issues and the taking of measures quickly. My work has consisted, overall, in developing a monitoring project. This implies, on the one hand, monitoring different aspects of the logs that are generated and sent in the calls to services that my company offers to the client, such as the total volume, the volume of errors, the average time, or the timeouts. We also had to create alerts based on this monitoring, whose purpose is to send a webhook to a website every time an anomaly is detected or a desired condition is met. On the other hand, I have also contributed to the development of this website, which aims to allow users to quickly view key aspects of the health of the services and notify them by SMS or email when the anomalies are generated. The monitoring part has been done using an ELK cluster (acronym for Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana), technologies that allow us to search and analyze our logs easily (Elasticsearch), ingest data from different sources simultaneously, transform it and send it to a warehouse (Logstash), visualize and manage the cluster from a GUI (Kibana). Once we have the data in indexs, we can create machine learning jobs, which will be fed of selected and transformed data from these indexs, and will learn to detect and generate anomalies using, among oth- ers, unsupervised learning. In addition, ELK allows the creation of watches, which are scheduled querys which verify if their result meets a condition, and if so, perform an action (in our case send a webhook). On the other hand, the website is being developed using Spring for the backend and Angular for the frontend, as well as an Oracle database. This web renovates and unifies the two websites that were used in this project before we began to use ML jobs of ELK: one web of monitoring, which created graphs of the data of ELK (obtained using its API) and associate them with a service; the other one was an administration website, which allowed grouping users, grouping services, linking groups of users with a service, creating rules that a service must meet, notify users associated to the service in case that a rule is not meeting, etc

This research aims to identify patterns of behaviour of global solar radiation (GSR) in the province of Chimborazo, from 2014 to 2017 through the statistical analysis of functional data, collected by the Alternative Energies and Environment Group of the “Escuela Superior Politécnica of Chimborazo” in the stations of: Alao, Atillo, Cumandá, ESPOCH, Matus, Multitud, Quimiag, San Juan, Tixan, Tunshi and Urbina. The study of meteorological variables becomes relevant when looking for possible sources of alternative and renewable energy, therefore, there is a need to know the characteristics of each of these, among which is the GSR, considering as functional data the intensity of radiation received during the 12 hours’ daylight thus working with 365 functional data per year. Through cross-correlation of the min.basis function of R, the smoothing cubic B-spline was identified as optimal with 15 bases and an average square error of 4.273653e-6. Atypical ones were identified: concentrated in 2015 for Alao and Atillo, in 2016 Tunshi and Multitud; with extreme behaviours in Tixan 2014 and 2017, and none in San Juan 2015, which were withdrawn for analysis. We found average GSR curves that range from 400 W / m2 (Multitud and Cumandá) to 800 W / m2 (ESPOCH). The level curves and raster surface images were plotted in which greater variability was observed from approximately 10 am to 3 pm. The first two main functional components, in general, explain a total variability greater than 80% for 2014, 2015 and 2016 while for 2017 of 74%. And the cluster analysis classified similar GSR behaviours into three groups: Alao, Cumandá, Atillo, San Juan, Urbina and Quimiag; ESPOCH, Tixan, Matus and Tunshi, and finally Multitud

A history-based framework of servitization and deservitization

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop a history-based framework of servitization and deservitization. Design/methodology/approach: The study draws on three history-based management theories, i.e. industry lifecycle, strategic pivoting and strategy restoration, to develop a conceptual framework of how servitization and deservitization pivots influence firm performance in different stages of the industry lifecycle. A series of examples involving configurations and reconfigurations in production illustrate the theoretical propositions. Findings: The proposed framework predicts that servitization pivots positively influence firm performance in the ferment phase, but this effect gradually diminishes as industries advance into transition and mature phases. In contrast, the framework predicts that deservitization pivots negatively influence firm performance in the ferment phase; this effect, too, becomes negligible in the transition phase but positive in the mature phase. Moreover, the proposed framework predicts that deservitization pivoting outperforms servitization pivoting in mature servitized industries to the extent that such pivots are restorative in nature, thereby suggesting that deservitization may represent a strategic opportunity for firms in mature industries. Originality/value: This study highlights the role of history-based management theories in enhancing our understanding of servitization and deservitization.authorsversionpublishe

Selling digital services abroad: How do extrinsic attributes influence foreign consumers’ purchase intentions?

    Get PDF
© 2017 The Authors This article investigates, through the country-of-origin effect and value-in-use lenses, how the implementation of digital services creates opportunities for cultural industries to expand internationally. We argue that intrinsic attributes of cultural content such as the capacity to entertain are difficult to parameterize because they are somewhat experiential and subjective. This means that extrinsic cues are essential to foreign consumers when making a decision to purchase digital services. We specifically evaluate the influence of Britishness, cultural distance, exoticness, brand image, and flag-brand congruence on the purchase intentions of consumers in foreign markets. This study employs a unique consumer dataset with information on the internationalization of British cultural digital services. The depth and breadth of the survey data collected through collaboration with a UK media industry partner with a globally recognised brand is significantly richer than data used in previous studies. In particular, the study exploits a survey with 5,200 usable data points from consumers residing in fourteen geographically dispersed countries. Findings support theoretical predictions that Britishness, cultural distance, exoticness, brand image and flag-brand congruence are positively linked to the purchasing decisions. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed
