    Pursuing the Principalship: Factors in Assistant Principals’ Decisions

    School administrators who are hired to lead and guide schools and districts must possess a number of characteristics that allow them to become successful leaders. The presence or absence of a strong educational leader can make all the difference in school climate and student achievement (Kelley, Thornton, & Daugherty, 2005). Educational leaders need to be cognizant of what constitutes an effective leader and which characteristics have the most effective impact on student achievement. Alford et al. (2011) stated, while principals are engaged in the managerial tasks of the school, securing the building for safety, ensuring bus routes, student schedules, and the day-to-day management tasks, the instructional needs of the faculty and students compete for attention (p. 29)

    We live in a 3-dimensional world. We know 2-dimensional objects as those we can see on paper. But what would an object with a nonnatural number (a number that isn\u27t a whole positive number) dimension look like? These dimensions exist and some unique mathematical sets have such dimensions, like log2/log3 . We call such dimensions and its tool Hausdorff dimension.     Evidence for a Gradual Decline in the Universal Rest-Frame UV Luminosity Density for z < 1

    We have utilized various magnitude-limited samples drawn from an extremely deep and highly complete spectroscopic redshift survey of galaxies observed in seven colors in the Hawaii Survey Fields and the Hubble Deep Field to investigate the evolution of the universal rest-frame ultraviolet luminosity density from z = 1 to the present. The multi-color data (U', B, V, R, I, J, HK') enable the sample selection to be made in the rest-frame ultraviolet for the entire redshift range. Due to the large sample size and depth (U_{AB} = 24.75, B_{AB} = 24.75, I_{AB} = 23.5), we are able to accurately determine the luminosity density to z = 1. We do not confirm the very steep evolution reported by Lilly et al. (1996) but instead find a shallower slope, approximately (1+z)^{1.5} for q0 = 0.5, which would imply that galaxy formation is continuing smoothly to the present time rather than peaking at z = 1. Much of the present formation is taking place in smaller galaxies. Detailed comparisons with other recent determinations of the evolution are presented.Comment: 37 pages including 18 figures.     Interrupting Teachers\u27 Assumptions and Beliefs About English Learners Using Culturally Relevant Literature and Poetry Circles

    Although classrooms across the United States continue to become more diverse, teachers are often underprepared to support the learning of immigrant students and students labeled as English learners (ELs). In the current investigation, we turn toward literature discussion using bilingual poetry with teachers to learn how participants recognize their assumptions and beliefs related to language and culture. In this phenomenological study framed with sociocultural and transactional theories, we present data related to teachers’ discussions of one bilingual poetry picture book. We share findings related to teachers’ understandings about their own assumptions, as well as personal connections to challenge those assumptions. We contend that teachers’ individual transactions and connections with literature led to interruptions in their assumptions and beliefs about students

    Freight Sequencing to Improve Hub Operations in the Less-Than-Truckload Freight Transportation Industry

    In less-than-truckload freight transportation, hub operations affect the service levels that carriers are able to provide their customers. This paper focuses on improving the efficiency of hub operations by reducing freight handling time and cost. Specifically, the freight sequencing problem (FSP) is investigated to determine the freight unloading and loading sequence that minimizes the time for dock workers to transfer shipments from origin trailers to destination trailers. The FSP is modeled as a Rural Postman Problem (RPP) and three algorithms are compared: trailer-at-atime, nearest neighbor, and balance-and-connect. Using five industrial data sets, the results demonstrate the effectiveness, advantages, and disadvantages of the approaches

    The Impact of the Community Partnership Schools Model Community School on Graduation and Attendance Rates in One Florida High School.

    The purpose of this quantitative study was to identify and describe the nature and extent of the relationships, if any, that existed between a Community Partnership Schools™ (CPS) model community school and the outcomes of graduation and attendance rates at one public high school in Florida. An evaluation study utilizing an interrupted time series (ITS) design addressed this problem by identifying and describing the relationship between the CPS model and the key outcome measures using visual analysis and descriptive statistics. Graduation and attendance rates for seven years before the CPS model was introduced (2003-2010) and seven years after the CPS model was introduced (2010-2017) at the CPS school were compared to the graduation and attendance rates for the same time frames of five other matched comparison high schools that had not implemented a CPS model community school. Findings of this study, though mixed, suggest the Community Partnership Schools™ model may have provided a positive environment for improvement in key measures at the targeted CPS high school. Though no definitive conclusions were reached, this study alongside other evaluations of the Community Partnership Schools™ model may be helpful in informing decision makers regarding the potential positive influence of the CPS model on such measures as graduation and attendance rates

    Generalization across Domains: The Relating-Forming-Extending Generalization Framework

    Generalization is a critical aspect of doing mathematics, with policy makers recommending that it be a central component of mathematics instruction at all levels. This recommendation poses serious challenges, however, given researchers consistently identifying students' difficulties in creating and expressing normative mathematical generalizations. We address these challenges by introducing a comprehensive framework characterizing students' generalizing, the Relating-Forming-Extending framework. Based on individual interviews with 90 students, we identify three major forms of generalizing and address relationships between forms of abstraction and forms of generalization. This paper presents the generalization framework and discusses the ways in which different forms of generalizing can play out in activity. [For complete proceedings, see ED581294.
