A supplement to the earlier bibliography compiled by Elliott and Tullett 1978 (FBA Occas. Publ. No. 4) covering literature from December 1977 - December 1982 on samplers that could be used for the rapid removal of benthic intertebrates from the natural substrata of rivers and streams. In addition it includes papers on marine samplers that have been or could be used in freshwater
Provisional atlas of the freshwater leeches of the British Isles
Distribution maps were included in the second edition of the F.B.A. Scientific Publication on British freshwater leeches (Mann 1964). When that publication was extensively revised and enlarged to include a review of the literature on the ecology of leeches (Elliott & Mann 1979), it was decided that new maps should be published separately. The original maps were based on 1097 records whereas 4198 records were used for the new maps. The total British Isles list comprises sixteen species, thirteen genera and four families of leeches

This annotated bibliography covers literature to the end of November 1977, and includes references to samplers that could be used for the rapid removal of benthic invertebrates from natural substrata of rivers and streams. Marine samplers which have been, or could be, used in freshwater. Coverage of Russian literature is incomplete, although a selection of recent and important references are included. The choice of a suitable sampler for benthic macroinvertebrates in deep rivers
Both chemical and biological methods are used to assess the water quality of rivers. Many standard physical and chemical methods are now established, but biological procedures of comparable accuracy and versatility are still lacking. This is unfortunate because the biological assessment of water quality has several advantages over physical and chemical analyses. Several groups of organisms have been used to assess water quality in rivers and these include Bacteria, Protozoa, Algae, macrophytes, macroinvertebrates and fish. Hellawell (1978) provides an excellent review of the advantages and disadvantages of these groups, and concludes that macroinvertebrates are the most useful for monitoring water quality. Although macroinvertebrates are relatively easy to sample in shallow water (depth 1m). The present paper first considers different types of samplers with emphasis on immediate samplers, and then discusses some problems in choosing a suitable sampler for benthic macroinvertebrates in deep rivers
Rapid serodiagnosis of Staphylococcus aureus surgical site infection following median sternotomy
Objectives: To determine the sensitivity and specificity of a novel ELISA for the serodiagnosis of surgical site infection (SSI) due to staphylococci following median sternotomy. Methods: Twelve patients with a superficial sternal SSI and 19 with a deep sternal SSI due to Staphylococcus aureus were compared with 37 control patients who also underwent median sternotomy for cardiac surgery but exhibited no microbiological or clinical symptoms of infection. A further five patients with sternal SSI due to coagulase-negative (CoNS) staphylococci were studied. An ELISA incorporating a recently recognised exocellular short chain form of lipoteichoic acid (lipid S) recovered from CoNS, was used to determine serum levels of anti-lipid S IgG in all patient groups. Results: Serum anti-lipid S IgG titres of patients with sternal SSI due to S. aureus were significantly higher than the control patients (P<0.0001). In addition, patients with deep sternal SSI had significantly higher serum anti-lipid S IgG titres than patients with superficial sternal SSI (P=0.03). Serum anti-lipid S IgG titres of patients with sternal SSI due to CoNS were significantly higher than the control patients (P=0.001). Conclusion: The lipid S ELISA may facilitate the diagnosis of sternal SSI due to S. aureus and could also be of value with infection due to CoNS. © 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd. on behalf of The Bristish Infection Society
Rotational and Vibrational Dynamics of Interstitial Molecular Hydrogen
The calculation of the hindered roton-phonon energy levels of a hydrogen
molecule in a confining potential with different symmetries is systematized for
the case when the rotational angular momentum is a good quantum number. One
goal of this program is to interpret the energy-resolved neutron time of flight
spectrum previously obtained for HC. This spectrum gives direct
information on the energy level spectrum of H molecules confined to the
octahedral interstitial sites of solid C. We treat this problem of
coupled translational and orientational degrees of freedom a) by construction
of an effective Hamiltonian to describe the splitting of the manifold of states
characterized by a given value of and having a fixed total number of phonon
excitations, b) by numerical solutions of the coupled translation-rotation
problem on a discrete mesh of points in position space, and c) by a group
theoretical symmetry analysis. Results obtained from these three different
approaches are mutually consistent. The results of our calculations explain
several hitherto uninterpreted aspects of the experimental observations, but
show that a truly satisfactory orientational potential for the interaction of
an H molecule with a surrounding array of C atoms has not yet been

RAPD for the typing of coagulase-negative staphylococci implicated in catheter-related bloodstream infection
Objectives: A rapid random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique was developed to distinguish between strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) involved in central venous catheter (CVC)-related bloodstream infection. Its performance was compared with that of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Methods: Patients at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, U.K. who underwent stem cell transplantation and were diagnosed with CVC-related bloodstream infection due to CoNS whilst on the bone marrow transplant unit were studied. Isolates of CoNS were genotyped by PFGE and RAPD, the latter employing a single primer and a simple DNA extraction method. Results: Both RAPD and PFGE were highly discriminatory (Simpson's diversity index, 0.96 and 0.99, respectively). Within the 49 isolates obtained from blood cultures of 33 patients, 20 distinct strains were identified by PFGE and 25 by RAPD. Of the 25 strains identified by RAPD, nine clusters of CoNS contained isolates from multiple patients, suggesting limited nosocomial spread. However, there was no significant association between time of inpatient stay and infection due to any particular strain. Conclusion: The RAPD technique presented allows CoNS strains to be genotyped with high discrimination within 4 h, facilitating real-time epidemiological investigations. In this study, no single strain of CoNS was associated with a significant number of CVC-related bloodstream infections. © 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of the British Infection Society
Active Reduction of an Enclosed Sound Field: An Experimental Investigation
Many experimental investigations into the active control of sound have concentrated on the simplest sound field, a one dimensional wave propagating along a duct, where a simple control strategy can be used because cancellation at one point guarantees cancellation downstream of that point. A simple controller can be implemented by measuring the sound upstream with a unidirectional sensor and using a feedforward controller with a delay and phase inversion to drive the cancelling source...........
Ground State Bands of the E(5) and X(5) Critical Symmetries Obtained from Davidson Potentials through a Variational Procedure
Davidson potentials of the form , when used in
the original Bohr Hamiltonian for -independent potentials bridge the
U(5) and O(6) symmetries. Using a variational procedure, we determine for each
value of angular momentum the value of at which the derivative of
the energy ratio with respect to has a sharp maximum,
the collection of values at these points forming a band which practically
coincides with the ground state band of the E(5) model, corresponding to the
critical point in the shape phase transition from U(5) to O(6). The same
potentials, when used in the Bohr Hamiltonian after separating variables as in
the X(5) model, bridge the U(5) and SU(3) symmetries, the same variational
procedure leading to a band which practically coincides with the ground state
band of the X(5) model, corresponding to the critical point of the U(5) to
SU(3) shape phase transition. A new derivation of the Holmberg-Lipas formula
for nuclear energy spectra is obtained as a by-product.Comment: LaTeX, 12 pages, 4 postscript figure
Nuclear multifragmentation and fission: similarity and differences
Thermal multifragmentation of hot nuclei is interpreted as the nuclear
liquid--fog phase transition deep inside the spinodal region. The experimental
data for p(8.1GeV) + Au collisions are analyzed. It is concluded that the decay
process of hot nuclei is characterized by two size parameters: transition state
and freeze-out volumes. The similarity between dynamics of fragmentation and
ordinary fission is discussed. The IMF emission time is related to the mean
rupture time at the multi-scission point, which corresponds to the kinetic
