    The Youthful Guest

    Get PDF
As long as there are children there will be guests. Grownups might stop visiting one another but the child will visit as long as there is anything to visit. He is too curious and adventurous to ever stop probing the depths of the neighbor\u27s house. Thus it is that whenever a new family moves into the neighborhood the children all know everything about the new family-what they have in the house, what thev all look like. and even a few of the family secrets long before their less curious parents ever do. It is. because of this that children are the real guests of the world

    Buttons and Buttons

    Get PDF
Men are fond of buttons. Indeed it was they who first stepped forth arrayed in many buttons. The Red Coats and the Hessians, Napoleon and Washington all paraded a goodly number of them on their dress uniforms. In all good famlily chests you are sure to find a stray brass button which may have dropped from the uniform of grandmother\u27s one-time sweet-heart. History tells us these things and we must believe history even if, because of the conventional few seen on the clothes of modern man, we are inclined to believe it must have been the women who started the fashion

2016 Jeffrey M. Hoeg Award Lecture: Immune Checkpoints in Atherosclerosis: Toward Immunotherapy for Atheroprotection

    Get PDF
Innate and adaptive immune effector mechanisms, in conjunction with hyperlipidemia, are important drivers of atherosclerosis. The interaction between the different immune cells and the secretion of cytokines and chemokines determine the progression of atherosclerosis. The activation or dampening of the immune response is tightly controlled by immune checkpoints. Costimulatory and coinhibitory immune checkpoints represent potential targets for immune modulatory therapies for atherosclerosis. This review will discuss the current knowledge on immune checkpoints in atherosclerosis and the clinical potential of immune checkpoint targeted therapy for atherosclerosis

Leaving Your Dignity at the Door: Maternity in Wellington 1950 - 1970

    No full text
This thesis describes the maternity system in Wellington between 1950 and 1970 particularly from the perspectives of consumers and midwives. Four women consumers who experienced maternity in Wellington and two midwives who worked in Wellington’s maternity hospitals during this period provided their oral testimonies as the main primary sources for this study. The author’s recollections of being a student nurse and a consumer in Wellington and other primary and secondary sources are used to substantiate, explore and explain the topic. The study traces the sociopolitical changes in New Zealand maternity from 1900 to 1970 creating a backdrop against which Wellington’s maternity system, including the women, the hospitals, the workforce, maternity practices and the childbearing process are illuminated using the insights of women and midwives who experienced them. “That’s what this lady who had had her baby, said to me, she said, You lose your dignity when you have your baby”, was a comment from one of the interviewed women. This took me back to student days when a common saying was ‘You leave your dignity at the door when you go in to have a baby’. These comments suggested the title for this thesis. The oral testimonies of the six participants described positive and negative aspects of their maternity experiences, but the three strong themes that arose from their accounts included ‘being alone’, ‘lack of autonomy’ and ‘uncaring attitudes’

Orchestrating Learning Scenarios for the Borderless Classroom

    Get PDF
This part of the symposium focuses on the design of seamless learning experiences in a borderless classroom. There are two parts to this symposium. We start with unpacking various theoretical approaches that inform the instructional design of boundary-crossing learning scenarios, such as social learning theory, experiential learning, situated cognition and theory of play. We then identify critical design elements for connecting in-and-out of classroom learning experiences, such as learning through an inquiry and exploration process and from bringing back personal stories that provide context back into to the classroom. Next, we present the Singapore Future School Experience as a case study to illustrate the design and enactment of four iterations of in-and-out of the classroom inquiry learning experiences. In this learning design students could apply and build knowledge across varying contexts. The retrospective analysis revealed that three critical design elements appeared to influence and shape the impact of inquiry learning on the learning processes and outcomes. First, a central task in the design process is to facilitate continuity: linking classroom and outdoor learning contexts. Second, providing an effective combination of both structured and unstructured learning activities enhanced intentional learning. Third, facilitating the creation of common ground helped to foster and sustain knowledge creation and advancement in seamless learning environments

Consumption of meat in relation to physical functioning in the Seniors-ENRICA cohort

Background: Meat is an important source of high-quality protein and vitamin B but also has a relatively high content of saturated and trans fatty acids. Although protein and vitamin B intake seems to protect people from functional limitations, little is known about the effect of habitual meat consumption on physical function. The objective of this study was to examine the prospective association between the intake of meat (processed meat, red meat, and poultry) and physical function impairment in older adults. Methods: Data were collected for 2982 participants in the Seniors-ENRICA cohort, who were aged ≄60 years and free of physical function impairment. In 2008-2010, their habitual diet was assessed through a validated computer-assisted face-to-face diet history. Study participants were followed up through 2015 to assess self-reported incident impairment in agility, mobility, and performance-based lower-extremity function. Results: Over a median follow-up of 5.2 years, we identified 625 participants with impaired agility, 455 with impaired mobility, and 446 with impaired lower-extremity function. After adjustment for potential confounders, processed meat intake was associated with a higher risk of impaired agility (hazard ratio [HR] for highest vs. lowest tertile: 1.33; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08-1.64; p trend = 0.01) and of impaired lower-extremity function (HR for highest vs. lowest tertile: 1.31; 95% CI: 1.02-1.68; p trend = 0.04). No significant associations were found for red meat and poultry. Replacing one serving per day of processed meat with one serving per day of red meat, poultry, or with other important protein sources (fish, legumes, dairy, and nuts) was associated with lower risk of impaired agility and lower-extremity function. Conclusions: A higher consumption of processed meat was associated with a higher risk of impairment in agility and lower-extremity function. Replacing processed meat by other protein sources may slow the decline in physical functioning in older adultsThis work was supported by grants from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, State Secretary of R+D+I of Spain and FEDER/FSE (FIS 13/0288, 16/609 and 16/1512), and the European Union: FP7-HEALTH-2012-Proposal No: 305483-2, "Utility of omic-based biomarkers in characterizing older individuals at risk for frailty, its progression to disability and general consequences to health and wellbeing - The FRAILOMIC Initiative"; EU H2020- Project ID: 635316, " Ageing Trajectories of Health: Longitudinal Opportunities and Synergies- The ATHLOS project"; and the JPI HDHL: "Salivary Markers of Diet and Health- The SALAMANDER project"
