An Analytical Approach to Merton’s Rational Option Pricing Theory

In the early 70s Merton developed a theory based on economic arguments to study the properties of option and warrant prices. The main tool in his proofs was the portfolio dominance principle. In the context where the price of a contingent claim satisfies a partial differential equation we provide analytical proofs of Merton’s rational option pricing theory. We use several versions of the maximum principle as well as the sliding and the moving planes methods to prove our results. “Intervention in Sixaola: institutional and epistemological basis of TCU: Public Art.”

El presente artículo es una transcripción de la charla: “Intervención en Sixaola: institucionalidad y base epistemológica del TCU: Arte Público.” impartida en el marco del seminario “Arte público, participación y diseño urbano” realizado en la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Costa Rica en el mes de noviembre del 2011. De forma específica, esta charla se realizó el día 8 de noviembre. El objetivo de esta charla era exponer los esfuerzos que se realizan desde la Universidad de Costa Rica en el tema del arte público y el desarrollo comunitario, por medio de proyecto que el autor de este artículo coordina desde la Escuela de Artes Plásticas en conjunto con la Vicerrectoría de Acción Social de dicha universidad Dado que los asistentes a esta charla no son extraños de la institucionalidad que envuelve al proyecto, la ponencia parte de ciertos supuestos conocidos por ellos, aunque ajenos a los posibles lectores de este artículo. The aim of this talk was to present the efforts made by the University of Costa Rica in the field of public art and community development, studying the project coordinated by the author of this article from the School of Visual Arts in conjunction with the Vice-chancellor for Social Action of the university. Integrating wildlife conservation into ecosystem service payments and carbon offsets: A case study from Costa Rica

Wildlife conservation is challenged by the expensive and cost prohibitive strategy of directly purchasing land to protect habitat at the landscape scale. An alternative mechanism used to protect habitat includes payments for ecosystem‐services (PES), where farmers and landowners are paid to manage their lands for a particular ecological service. Some of these easements are used to conserve a diversity of resources (i.e., water, soil, nutrient cycling, and biodiversity); however, the largest PES easement programs focus on carbon sequestration and are sold on international carbon markets as offsets. Here, we demonstrate that successfully protecting vulnerable habitat for wildlife can be achieved through partnerships with programs that trade in carbon offsets by focusing landowner recruitment activities in areas with ecologically valuable habitat. This collaborative strategy represents a cost effective and efficient model to protect wildlife at landscape scales. As proof of concept, in 2015 we successfully protected and restored habitats used by golden‐winged warblers, a species being considered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service for protection under the Endangered Species Act, by partnering with organizations responsible for managing carbon offsets in Costa Rica. Through these partnerships, we successfully protected 790 ha of valuable habitat, within a single year, by recruiting farmers and landowners into an easement program in the heart of the warbler\u27s winter range. We present our efforts as a model for similar collaborative partnerships in the tropics and beyond

An Alternative Formula to Price American Options.

We give a new way to price American options, using Samuelson´s formula. We first obtain the option price corresponding to a European option at time t, weighting it by the probability that the underlying asset takes the value S at time t. This factor is given by the solution of the Fokker-Planck (Kolmogorov) equation for the transition probability density. The main advantage of this approach is that we can introduce systematically the effect of macroeconomic factors. If a macroeconomic framework is given by a dynamic system in the form of a set of ordinary differential equations we only have to solve a partial differential equation, for the transition probability density. In this context, we verify, for the sake of consistency, that this formula is consistent with the Black-Scholes model.American options, Fokker-Planck, Black-Scholes, Samuelson, density probability function.

Otros Juramentos: Arte Público y pactos de disidencia

This paper addresses four projects of Public Art that are generated by a series of dissidence pacts between participants. The purpose of this analysis is to induce a reading of art and its link with political space from a decolonial perspective that allows it to be framed in the relations of power that confront Institutional policies and activism. To achieve such a purpose, the latest developments of Michel Foucault on Socratic thought are proposed as a background, what allows to deconstruct the hegemonies that determine the link between state power and the control of subjectivity.Este artículo aborda cuatro proyectos de Arte Público que surgen a partir de una serie de pactos de disidencia entre participantes. El propósito de dicho análisis es inducir una relectura del arte y su vinculo con el espacio político desde una perspectiva decolonial que posibilite enmarcarlo en las relaciones de poder que confrontan la política institucional y el activismo. Para ello, se plantea de trasfondo los últimos desarrollos de Michel Foucault sobre el pensamiento Socrático, los cuales permiten deconstruir las hegemonías que determinan el vínculo entre el poder estatal y el control de la subjetividad

Multitude and Resistance in the Framework of the Contemporary “Empire”, According to Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt

El presente artículo aborda las teorías desarrolladas por Antonio Negri y Michael Hardt sobre el imperio global contemporáneo, los nuevos sujetos políticos y las formas de resistencia que en él operan. Estas últimas, se presentan de forma coherente con las transformaciones epistemológicas que ha sufrido el arte en las últimas décadas, las cuales han redefinido sus prácticas y sus formas de vinculación con lo político. Se concluye que la imbricación entre arte y activismo político –a diferencia de los acoples modernistas entre arte y política– permite vislumbrar el potencial y la relevancia del arte contemporáneo para la continua construcción y defensa de una sociedad democrática, solidaria y equitativa en el panorama actual.This paper addresses the theories developed by Antonio Negri y Michael Hardt about the contemporary Global Empire, the new political subjects and the forms of resistance that operate in it. These forms of resistance are presented consistent with the epistemological transformations that has undergone art in recent decades, which have redefined their practices and their links with politics. Un sentido silencioso. Kant y Duchamp a partir de una lectura de Hannah Arendt

Este ensayo pretende problematizar dos posturas teóricas que, en la década de los noventas, construyeron una serie de relaciones entre la obra del artista Marcel Duchamp y el filósofo Immanuel Kant. Esto, con el propósito de formular un estado de la cuestión sobre el cual trazar una tercera vía, al afirmar una condición política que los articula. Esa condición política se desprende del pensamiento de Hannah Arendt, quien la interpretó en Kant como un “sentido silencioso”. Algunos pa(i)sajes oscuros en la historia del arte costarricense

El presente artículo busca iluminar una serie de manifestaciones artísticas normalmente ignoradas por la historia del arte costarricense. Ubicadas fuera de lo que comúnmente se considera como la experiencia estética (autónoma, sublime, bella, noble), estos objetos de estudio han sido menospreciados y excluidos de los relatos dominantes.
