Spontaneous appearance of de novo intracranial arteriovenous malformation in hepatic cirrhosis
BACKGROUND
Intracranial arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are rare lesions that can be congenital or acquired in early childhood, with fatal outcome in approximately 30% of cases. De novo formation during adulthood without established predisposing vascular pathology or previous brain insult is even less frequent.
CASE DESCRIPTION
We present a case of de novo brain AVM in an alcoholic Child-B cirrhosis setting. Thirty previously reported cases presented de novo AVM in patients of all ages that had another previous brain pathology or insult, such as AVM resection. Seventeen of those cases occurred in adult patients, with only 2 showing no significant predisposing factor. The present pathophysiological review covers and completes Mullan's hemodynamic "two-hit" model, associating probable thrombotic predisposition to AVM with brain insult triggering a later stage based on angiogenic stimuli.
CONCLUSIONS
This case report and literature review renews previously discussed hemodynamic theories and contributes to a fuller understanding of the pathogenesis and progression of AVM. We postulate a causal link between hepatopathy and de novo AVM, which should be strengthened and interpreted based on recent genetic data and future prospective studies
Parkinson's disease may disrupt overlapping subthalamic nucleus and pallidal motor networks.
There is an ongoing debate about differential clinical outcome and associated adverse effects of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) targeting the subthalamic nucleus (STN) or the globus pallidus pars interna (GPi). Given that functional connectivity profiles suggest beneficial DBS effects within a common network, the empirical evidence about the underlying anatomical circuitry is still scarce. Therefore, we investigate the STN and GPi-associated structural covariance brain patterns in PD patients and healthy controls. We estimate GPi's and STN's whole-brain structural covariance from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a normative mid- to old-age community-dwelling cohort (n = 1184) across maps of grey matter volume, magnetization transfer (MT) saturation, longitudinal relaxation rate (R1), effective transversal relaxation rate (R2*) and effective proton density (PD*). We compare these with the structural covariance estimates in patients with idiopathic PD (n = 32) followed by validation using a reduced size controls' cohort (n = 32). In the normative data set, we observed overlapping spatially distributed cortical and subcortical covariance patterns across maps confined to basal ganglia, thalamus, motor, and premotor cortical areas. Only the subcortical and midline motor cortical areas were confirmed in the reduced size cohort. These findings contrasted with the absence of structural covariance with cortical areas in the PD cohort. We interpret with caution the differential covariance maps of overlapping STN and GPi networks in patients with PD and healthy controls as correlates of motor network disruption. Our study provides face validity to the proposed extension of the currently existing structural covariance methods based on morphometry features to multiparameter MRI sensitive to brain tissue microstructure

Synthesis, Characterization, and Magnetic Properties of Pure and EDTA-Capped NiO Nanosized Particles
The effect of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a capping agent on the structure, morphology, optical, and magnetic properties of nickel oxide (NiO) nanosized particles, synthesized by coprecipitation method, was investigated. Nickel chloride hexahydrate and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were used as precursors. The resultant nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD patterns showed that NiO have a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure. The crystallite size, estimated by Scherrer formula, has been found in the range of 28–33 nm. It is noticed that EDTA-capped NiO nanoparticles have a smaller size than pure nanoparticles. Thus, the addition of 0.1 M capping agent EDTA can form a nucleation point for nanoparticles growth. The optical and magnetic properties were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy (UV) as well as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and magnetization measurements. FTIR spectra indicated the presence of absorption bands in the range of 402–425 cm−1, which is a common feature of NiO. EPR for NiO nanosized particles was measured at room temperature. An EPR line with g factor ≈1.9–2 is detected for NiO nanoparticles, corresponding to Ni2+ ions. The magnetic hysteresis of NiO nanoparticles showed that EDTA capping recovers the surface magnetization of the nanoparticles
Study of Spin and Decay-Plane Correlations of W Bosons in the e+e- -> W+W- Process at LEP
Data collected at LEP at centre-of-mass energies \sqrt(s) = 189 - 209 GeV are
used to study correlations of the spin of W bosons using e+e- -> W+W- -> lnqq~
events. Spin correlations are favoured by data, and found to agree with the
Standard Model predictions. In addition, correlations between the W-boson decay
planes are studied in e+e- -> W+W- -> lnqq~ and e+e- -> W+W- -> qq~qq~ events.
Decay-plane correlations, consistent with zero and with the Standard Model
predictions, are measured
Search for Branons at LEP
We search, in the context of extra-dimension scenarios, for the possible
existence of brane fluctuations, called branons. Events with a single photon or
a single Z-boson and missing energy and momentum collected with the L3 detector
in e^+ e^- collisions at centre-of-mass energies sqrt{s}=189-209$ GeV are
analysed. No excess over the Standard Model expectations is found and a lower
limit at 95% confidence level of 103 GeV is derived for the mass of branons,
for a scenario with small brane tensions. Alternatively, under the assumption
of a light branon, brane tensions below 180 GeV are excluded
Ultrarelativistic sources in nonlinear electrodynamics
The fields of rapidly moving sources are studied within nonlinear
electrodynamics by boosting the fields of sources at rest. As a consequence of
the ultrarelativistic limit the delta-like electromagnetic shock waves are
found. The character of the field within the shock depends on the theory of
nonlinear electrodynamics considered. In particular, we obtain the field of an
ultrarelativistic charge in the Born-Infeld theory.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
