An Investigation into the Logic Textbooks Written in Accordance with the 2009 Logic Curriculum
Textbooks have attained an essential position with the student-centered approach. Accordingly, curricula are developed based largely on constructivist approach. Since textbooks are prepared in accordance with the curriculum, they are therefore constructivist approach-oriented. As a result, textbooks are the reflection of the curriculum. The mistakes in textbooks can directly affect learning in a negative manner. Additionally, the visuals, reading texts, preparation and evaluation questions in textbooks should be on a par with the outcomes in the curriculum in regard to level and structure. In this study, three of the textbooks written in accordance with the 2009 logic course curriculum were examined in terms of physical features, distribution by units, their congruence to the curriculum, language and expression, scientific content, print-typesetting-orthography, reading texts, preparation and evaluation questions, and bibliography. From this aspect, this study is qualitative. Document review method was adopted in this study. It was discovered that the evaluation questions in the textbooks framed to measure the outcomes were under the outcome levels. To exemplify, the questions taxonomically at the evaluation level were found to be corresponding to the knowledge and comprehension levels, it was further explored that most errors were detected in the elements of print-typesetting-orthography
Epicardial fat thickness is associated with retinopathy in patients with newly diagnosed hypertension
OBJECTIVE: Hypertensive retinopathy develops based on endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and atherosclerosis. Epicardial fat secretes various cytokines associated with endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, inflammation, and atherosclerosis. We aimed to evaluate whether epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) thickness is a marker for retinopathy in newly diagnosed hypertensive patients.
METHODS: A total of 73 newly diagnosed hypertension (HT) patients were included in the study. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) was used to measure EAT thickness. To evaluate the presence of retinopathy in HT patients, hypertensive retinopathy staging was performed by ophthalmologists, according to Scheie classification.
RESULTS: Retinopathy was detected in 27 (37.0%) of 73 patients. EAT thickness in HT patients with retinopathy was higher than the group without retinopathy (5.07 +/- 1.45 mm vs. 4.19 +/- 1.20 mm, p=0.007). Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in HT patients with retinopathy were higher than the group without retinopathy (162.4 +/- 41.2 mg/dl vs. 138.1 +/- 35.6 mg/dl, p=0.010). As a result of the regression analysis, LDL-C (OR=1.016, 95% CI 1.001-1.031, p=0.043) and EAT thickness (OR=1.674, 95% CI 1.069-2.626, p=0.043) were the independent predictors of retinopathy.
CONCLUSION: Increased EAT thickness is associated with the presence of retinopathy in hypertensive patients
The impact of orienteering sport taught through creative drama methods on five factor personality dimensions
4th World Conference on Educational Sciences (WCES) -- FEB 02-05, 2012 -- Univ Barcelona, Barcelona, SPAINWOS: 000314465905007This study aims to analyze the impact of orienteering sport taught through creative drama methods on individuals' emotional instability/neuroticism, extroversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness dimensions. With this aim in, extroversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness dimensions and based on Five-Factor Theory was implemented on physical education department students at Kirikkale University during spring 2010-2011 academic year. The ABPT was implemented on university students before they started studying orienteering sport taught by creative drama methods. The test consisting of emotional instability/neuroticism, extroversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness dimensions includes 40 items. The ABPT was implemented on the students again after they had completed the 10-week orienteering sport programme taught by creative drama methods. The findings of this study revealed that there was a meaningful difference between the emotional instability/neuroticism, extroversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, conscientiousness dimensions pretest and posttest scores of the study group in favour of conscientiousness dimension.Acad World Educ & Res Ctr, Near E Univ, Bahcesehir Univ, Ankara Univ, Hacettepe Univ, Cyprus Educ Sci Asso
Estimating OHS costs of building construction projects based on mathematical methods
In the recent years, occupational health and safety (OHS) has become a popular topic in many sectors and holds its ground on the agenda with legal regulations. Given that work accidents occur at a higher rate in the construction industry compared to other sectors, this reality increases the importance of the topic of determining OHS costs in the construction sector. After all, it is notable that the estimation of OHS costs at the project stage is assessed as a situation that requires a great effort from the contractors' standpoint. The aim of this study is to determine the variation in health and safety costs using mathematical methods based on the size of construction areas in construction projects. Moreover, the reflection of considering or ignoring OHS to the level of occurrence of work accidents is determined. In the first stage of the study, variation in the costs of six major health and safety categories according to the size of construction area based on thirty-construction projects was determined using regression analysis. Secondly, considering four hundred-work accidents, the variation in work accidents according to the situations where relevant occupational health and safety equipment categories were considered or not was determined using Pareto analysis. Then, a comparison was made between OHS equipment category costs and work accidents. The findings showed that each category and the total OHS cost exhibited a linear variation with the size of construction area. Thereby, OHS costs could be estimated based on the size of construction areas in the construction projects. It is concluded that the effect of lacking any OHS on the rate of increase of work accidents can be provided using the results of the study
4D-QSAR Studies Using a New Descriptor of the Klopman Index: Antibacterial Activities of Sulfone Derivatives Containing 1, 3, 4-Oxadiazole Moiety Based on MCET Model
Introduction: In this paper, we have introduced a new atomic descriptor with Klopman index to determine the local reactive sites of the molecular systems during electrophilic, and nucleophilic attacks. This index, similar to other local reactivity descriptors but more advanced, has been used as a realistic descriptor to discover new aspects of molecular structure
