A new CAE procedure for railway wheel tribological design

    Get PDF
New demands are being imposed on railway wheel wear and reliability to increase the time between wheel reprofiling, improve safety and reduce total wheelset lifecycle costs. In parallel with these requirements, changes in railway vehicle missions are also occurring. These have led to the need to operate rolling stock on track with low as well as high radius curves; increase speeds and axle loads; and contend with a decrease in track quality due to a reduction in maintenance. These changes are leading to an increase in the severity of the wheel/rail contact conditions, which may increase the likelihood of wear or damage occurring. The aim of this work was to develop a new CAE design methodology to deal with these demands. The model should integrate advanced numerical tools for modelling of railway vehicle dynamics and suitable models to predict wheelset durability under typical operating conditions. This will help in designing wheels for minimum wheel and rail wear; optimising railway vehicle suspensions and wheel profiles; maintenance scheduling and the evaluation of new wheel materials. Introduction. Nurses often experience work-related stress. High stress can negatively affect job satisfaction and lead to emotional exhaustion with risk of burnout. Aim. To analyse possible differences in biological stress markers, psychosocial working conditions, health, and well-being between nurses working in two different departments. Methods. Stress was evaluated in nurses working in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) (n=33) and nurses working in a child and adolescent psychiatry inpatient ward (CAP) (n=14) using salivary cortisol and HbA1c. Salivary cortisol was measured three times a day on two consecutive days during two one-week periods, seven weeks apart (= 12 samples/person). Psychosocial working conditions, health, and well-being were measured once. Results. NICU nurses had better social support and more self-determination. CAP nurses had a lower salivary cortisol quotient, poorer general health, and higher client-related burnout scores. Conclusion. When comparing these nurses with existing norm data for Sweden, as a group their scores reflect less work-related stress than Swedes overall. However, the comparison between NICU and CAP nurses indicates a less healthy work situation for CAP nurses. Relevance to Clinical Practice. Healthcare managers need to acknowledge the less healthy work situation CAP nurses experience in order to provide optimal support and promote good health

The effectiveness of portable air cleaners against tobacco smoke in multizone residential environments

The purpose of this study was to investigate how the effectiveness of portable air cleaners (ACs) against tobacco smoke is influenced by the clean air delivery rate (CADR), the location of the AC in relation to the pollution source and the apartment structure. The study was based on field experiments and simulations with the CONTAM software. The AC effectiveness was about 80% for one AC, and 93% for two ACs in the studied apartment (volume=110m3). Ultrafine particles (UFP) exposure in a room without tobacco smoking (clean room) could be much less than in the source room if these rooms were not directly connected with each other (but indirectly connected via doors open to other rooms). Operating the AC in one of the rooms without cigarette smoking could develop a partly isolated clean environment. However, this led to a rather low cleaning effectiveness for the concentration of ultrafine particles in the apartment as a whole. If operating the AC in the room where cigarettes are being smoked, the UFP exposure in the whole apartment can be further reduced

The pervasive relevance of COVID-19 within routine paediatric palliative care consultations during the pandemic: a conversation analytic study

Background: The importance of caring for children with complex and serious conditions means that paediatric palliative care must continue during pandemics. The recent pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) provides a natural experiment to study health communication during pandemic times. However, it is unknown how communication within consultations might change during pandemics. Aim: This study, a sub-study of a larger project, aimed to examine real-world instances of communication in paediatric palliative care consultations prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic to understand how clinicians and families talk about the pandemic. Design: Paediatric palliative care consultations prior to, during, and immediately following the initial peak of COVID-19 cases in Australia were video recorded and analysed using Conversation Analysis methods. Setting/Participants: Twenty-five paediatric palliative care consultations (including face-to-face outpatient, telehealth outpatient and inpatient consultations) were video recorded within a public children's hospital in Australia. Participants included 14 health professionals, 15 child patients, 23 adult family members and 5 child siblings. Results: There was a pervasive relevance of both serious and non-serious talk about COVID-19 within the consultations recorded during the pandemic. Topics typical of a standard paediatric palliative care consultation often led to discussion of the pandemic. Clinicians (55%) and parents (45%) initiated talk about the pandemic. Conclusions: Clinicians should not be surprised by the pervasiveness of COVID-19 or other pandemic talk within standard paediatric palliative care consultations. This awareness will enable clinicians to flexibly address family needs and concerns about pandemic-related matters that may impact health and wellbeing.Katie Ekberg, Lara Weinglass, Stuart Ekberg, Susan Danby and Anthony Herber

Gamma radiolytic stability of CyMe4BTBP and the effect of nitric acid

The highly selective nitrogen donor ligand CyMe4BTBP for An(III) separation by solvent extraction was irradiated in a 60Co γ-source under varying conditions. Organic solutions of 10 mmol/L ligand in 1-octanol were contacted with different concentrations of nitric acid to observe the influence of an aqueous phase during irradiation. In subsequent liquid-liquid extraction experiments, distribution ratios of 241Am and 152Eu were determined. Distribution ratios decreased with increasing absorbed dose when irradiation was performed in the absence of nitric acid. With addition of nitric acid, initial distribution ratios remained constant over the whole examined dose range up to 300 kGy. For qualitative determination of radiolysis products, HPLC-MS measurements were performed. The protective effect of nitric acid was confirmed, since in samples irradiated with acid contact, no degradation products were observed, but only addition products of the 1-octanol molecule to the CyMe4BTBP molecule
