    Influence of convection on microstructure

    The influence was studied of convection during directional solidification on the resulting microstructure of eutectics, specifically lead/tin and manganese/bismuth. A theory was developed for the influence of convection on the microstructure of lamellar and fibrous eutectics, through the effect of convection on the concentration field in the melt in front of the growing eutectic. While the theory agrees with the experimental spin-up spin-down results, it predicts that the weak convection expected due to buoyancy will not produce a measurable change in eutectic microstructure. Thus, this theory does not explain the two fold decrease in MnBi fiber size and spacing observed when MnBi-Bi is solidified in space or on Earth with a magnetic field applied. Attention was turned to the morphology of the MnBi-Bi interface and to the generation of freezing rate fluctuations by convection. Decanting the melt during solidification of MnBi-Bi eutectic showed that the MnBi phase projects into the melt ahead of the Bi matrix. Temperature measurements in a Bi melt in the vertical Bridgman-Stockbarger configuration showed temperature variations of up to 25 C. Conclusions are drawn and discussed

    First principles investigation of ferroelectricity in epitaxially strained Pb2_2TiO4_4

    The structure and polarization of the as-yet hypothetical Ruddlesden-Popper compound Pb2_2TiO4_4 are investigated within density-functional theory. Zone enter phonons of the high-symmetry K2_2NiF4_4-type reference structure, space group I4/mmmI4/mmm, were calculated. At the theoretical ground-state lattice constants, there is one unstable infrared-active phonon. This phonon freezes in to give the I2mmI2mm ferroelectric state. As a function of epitaxial strain, two additional ferroelectric phases are found, with space groups I4mmI4mm and F2mmF2mm at compressive and tensile strains, respectively.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    A Retrospective Study of Acute Poisoning in Children under 5 Years Old Admitted to Alexandria Poison Center in Egypt

    Abstract Childhood poisoning represents a major public health preventable problem worldwide. It has been identified that unintentional poisoning is the most common circumstances of poisoning in young children. Various drugs and chemical compounds have been implicated such as kerosene being the most common household agent. Aim: The current study aimed to retrospectively study acute poisoning in children less than 5 years old admitted to Alexandria Poison Center (APC) at Alexandria Main University hospital as regards; pattern of childhood poisoning (incidence and prevalence), risk factors related to poisoning accidents and the outcome. Subjects and Methods: All patients aged less than 5 years with acute poisoning admitted to Alexandria Poison Center at Alexandria Main University Hospital, Alexandria, Egypt, during the period of 8 months started from 1st January to 31st August 2012 were included in the study. Results: This retrospective study involved 620 intoxicated children which represented 20.7% of total poisoning cases admitted to APC at that period of time. The incidence of poisoning was found to be highest in children aged between 3 to 5 years old and constituted 49.1% and 39.6% of males and females respectively. The mode of poisoning was found to be accidental with no reported cases of neither homicidal nor suicidal poisonings. The most common agent of toxicity in children was found to be kerosene, followed by chlorine and cholinesterase inhibitor insecticide. The outcome of most of cases (84.5%) was recovery and discharge, with 10.5% being admitted to (Intensive Care Unit) ICU and 5% mortality rate. Conclusion: Risk factors for unintentional poisoning in children involve accessibility to hazardous chemicals and medicines caused by unsafe storage, aggressive child's behavior, unsafe storage of kerosene oil and petrol, low socioeconomic status as well as low educational level of the mother

    Infecção natural pelo Trypanosoma cruzi em cães de áreas endêmicas da República Argentina

    The population dynamics and the prevalence of chagasic infection of 352 dogs living in 108 rural houses infested by triatomines were studied. The region was divided into three sections according to increasing distances to an urban area. Each animal was identified by means of its particular characteristics and built, and its owners gave information about its habits. By means of xenodiagnosis, serology and ECG studies, prevalences of infection, parasitological-serological correlation, percentage of altered electrocardiographic outlines and percentage of houses with parasitemic dogs, were determined. The rural area showed a characteristic T. cruzi infection pattern and differences in the canine population parameters with respect to the other areas were observed: a higher proportion of puppies than adult dogs, a more sedentary population, higher prevalences of infection, as measured by xenodiagnosis, in dogs, and the highest proportion of bedroom insects infected with T. cruzi. It is assumed that the sedentary characteristics of the human population in that rural area impinge in the blood offer to the triatomine population, and the high percentage of parasitemic dogs of the area, contribute to the rise of "kissing ougs" infected with T. cruzi found in bedrooms.Estudou-se a dinâmica populacional e a prevalência de infecção chagásica de 352 cães vivendo em 108 moradias rurais infestadas por triato-míneos. A área foi dividida em três setores de acordo com suas crescentes distâncias em relação a um povoado urbano. Cada animal foi identificado mediante suas características particulares, e seus donos deram informações a respeito de seus hábitos. As prevalências de infecção foram determinadas por sorologia, correlação parasitológica-sorológica, percentual de traçados eletrocardiográficos alterados e o percentual de moradias com cães parasitados. A área rural mostrou um padrão característico de infecção por T. cruzi e observaram-se diferenças nos parâmetros de população canina em relação às restantes áreas: maior proporção de filhotes, maior população humana e canina sedentárias, maiores prevalências de infecção por xenodiagnóstico em cães e maior proporção de barbeiros infectados com T. cruzi nos cômodos da casa. Supõe-se que as características sedentárias da população humana desta área rural é fundamental para a oferta de sangue para as populações triatomíneas, e a elevada porcentagem de cães parasitêmicos dessa área contribui para o aumento de barbeiros infectados com T. cruzi encontrados nos quartos de dormir

    Statistical Inference of Marshall-Olkin Extended Exponential Distribution Based on Progressively Type-I Censored Data

    In this article, we intend to study the progressive Type-I censoring (PT-TC) that has been examined, employing the Marshall-Olkin extended exponential (MOEE) distribution as the fundamental lifetime distribution. The censoring technique is believed to be independent and non-informative. Because maximum likelihood (ML) estimators cannot be derived in closed form, ML estimates (MLEs) are calculated via Newton-Raphson method approaches. In this approach, MLEs and asymptotic confidence intervals for unknown parameters are produced. Under squared error and linear exponential (LINEX) loss functions, the Bayes estimations of unknown parameters with gamma priors are evaluated. Once both parameters are unknown, the Bayes estimators cannot be computed explicitly. Then, the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique is employed to construct Bayes estimates using the Metropolis-Hasting (MH) algorithm. The highest posterior density (HPD) credible intervals of the unknown parameter are calculated. Simulation studies are carried out to explore the finite sample effectiveness of the recommended estimators, as well as data set analyses at various schemes of PT-TC samples

    Actin-dependent vacuolar occupancy of the cell determines auxin-induced growth repression

    The cytoskeleton is an early attribute of cellular life and its main components are composed of conserved proteins (Fletcher and Mullins, 2010). The actin cytoskeleton has a direct impact on cell size control in animal cells (Fletcher and Mullins, 2010; Faix et al., 1996), but its mechanistic contribution to cellular growth in plants remains largely elusive. Here, we reveal a role of actin in cell size regulation in plants. The actin cytoskeleton shows proximity to vacuoles, and the phytohormone auxin not only controls the organisation of actin filaments, but also impacts on vacuolar morphogenesis in an actin-dependent manner. Pharmacological and genetic interference with the actin-myosin system abolishes the auxin effect on vacuoles and thus disrupts its negative influence on cellular growth. SEM-based 3D nanometre resolution imaging of the vacuoles revealed that auxin controls the constriction and luminal size of the vacuole. We show that this actin-dependent mechanism controls the relative cellular occupancy of the vacuole, thus proposing an unanticipated mechanism for cytosol homeostasis during cellular growth

    Perceived Risk of falls among Acute Care Patients

    Purpose: In an effort to lower the number of falls that occur among hospitalized patients, several facilities have begun introducing various fall prevention programs. However, the efficacy of fall prevention programs is diminished if patients do not consider themselves to be at risk for falls and do not follow recommended procedures. The goal of this study was to characterize how patients in four different acute care specialist services felt about their risk of falling while in the hospital. Methods: One hundred patients admitted to the study hospital with a Morse Fall Scale score of 45 or higher were given the Patient Perception Questionnaire, a tool designed to assess a patient's perception of their own fall risk, fear of falling, and motivation to take part in fall prevention efforts. Scores on the Morse Fall Scale were gathered through a historical assessment of medical records. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and independent sample t tests were used to examine the data. Results: The average age was 65, and around half (52%) were men and half (48%) were women. Based on their ratings on the Morse Fall Scale, all 100 participants were classified as being at high risk for falls. However, only 55.5% of the individuals agreed with this assessment. The likelihood that a patient would seek assistance and the degree to which they feared falling both declined as their faith in their mobility improved. Patients hospitalized after a fall exhibited considerably lower confidence scores and greater fear scores than patients who had not been injured in a fall. Conclusions: Patients who have a high fall risk assessment score may not believe they are at risk for falls and may not take any steps to reduce their risk. The prevalence of falls in hospitals might be mitigated by the creation of a fall risk assessment technique that takes into account both objective and subjective factors

    Epidemiology of chronic kidney disease in children

    In the past 30 years there have been major improvements in the care of children with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, most of the available epidemiological data stem from end-stage renal disease (ESRD) registries and information on the earlier stages of pediatric CKD is still limited. The median reported incidence of renal replacement therapy (RRT) in children aged 0–19 years across the world in 2008 was 9 per million of the age-related population (4–18 years). The prevalence of RRT in 2008 ranged from 18 to 100 per million of the age-related population. Congenital disorders, including congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) and hereditary nephropathies, are responsible for about two thirds of all cases of CKD in developed countries, while acquired causes predominate in developing countries. Children with congenital disorders experience a slower progression of CKD than those with glomerulonephritis, resulting in a lower proportion of CAKUT in the ESRD population compared with less advanced stages of CKD. Most children with ESRD start on dialysis and then receive a transplant. While the survival rate of children with ERSD has improved, it remains about 30 times lower than that of healthy peers. Children now mainly die of cardiovascular causes and infection rather than from renal failure

    Identification of potential therapeutic targets for COVID-19 through a structural-based similarity approach between SARS-CoV-2 and its human host proteins

    Background: The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has led to millions of deaths worldwide, and vaccination efficacy has been decreasing with each lineage, necessitating the need for alternative antiviral therapies. Predicting host–virus protein–protein interactions (HV-PPIs) is essential for identifying potential host-targeting drug targets against SARS-CoV-2 infection.Objective: This study aims to identify therapeutic target proteins in humans that could act as virus–host-targeting drug targets against SARS-CoV-2 and study their interaction against antiviral inhibitors.Methods: A structure-based similarity approach was used to predict human proteins similar to SARS-CoV-2 (“hCoV-2”), followed by identifying PPIs between hCoV-2 and its target human proteins. Overlapping genes were identified between the protein-coding genes of the target and COVID-19-infected patient’s mRNA expression data. Pathway and Gene Ontology (GO) term analyses, the construction of PPI networks, and the detection of hub gene modules were performed. Structure-based virtual screening with antiviral compounds was performed to identify potential hits against target gene-encoded protein.Results: This study predicted 19,051 unique target human proteins that interact with hCoV-2, and compared to the microarray dataset, 1,120 target and infected group differentially expressed genes (TIG-DEGs) were identified. The significant pathway and GO enrichment analyses revealed the involvement of these genes in several biological processes and molecular functions. PPI network analysis identified a significant hub gene with maximum neighboring partners. Virtual screening analysis identified three potential antiviral compounds against the target gene-encoded protein.Conclusion: This study provides potential targets for host-targeting drug development against SARS-CoV-2 infection, and further experimental validation of the target protein is required for pharmaceutical intervention

    The results from the published studies on the association between angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) insertion/deletion (I/D) gene polymorphism and the treatment response to steroid in Asian children with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) is still conflicting. This meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the relation between ACE I/D gene polymorphism and treatment response to steroid in Asian children and to explore whether ACE D allele or DD genotype could become a predictive marker for steroid responsiveness. = 0.85; respectively), however, the result for the association of II genotype with SRNS risk was not stable.Our results indicate that D allele or DD homozygous can't become a significant genetic molecular marker to predict the treatment response to steroid in Asian children with INS
