Who wants a referendum on EU membership? Exploring public attitudes in six Member States
Using data from a survey conducted in six EU Member States, we explore what drives citizen demand for referendums on EU membership. We examine whether or not similar drivers and mechanisms can be found across the countries surveyed. We consider what are traditionally understood to be the drivers of euroscepticism, exploring whether those same drivers help to explain demand for referendums on EU membership. Our most important finding is that citizensâ attitudes to EU referendums are not driven, or explained, by a single issue, or by uniform mechanisms cross-nationally. Although we find that trust in EU institutions is a significant predictor of referendum demand, the impact of other factors considered varies substantially across the six countries
New membership determination and proper motions of NGC 1817. Parametric and non-parametric approach
We have calculated proper motions and re-evaluated the membership
probabilities of 810 stars in the area of two NGC objects, NGC 1817 and NGC
1807. We have obtained absolute proper motions from 25 plates in the reference
system of the Tycho-2 Catalogue. The plates have a maximum epoch difference of
81 years; and they were taken with the double astrograph at Zo-Se station of
Shanghai Observatory, which has an aperture of 40 cm and a plate scale of 30
arcsec/mm. The average proper motion precision is 1.55 mas/yr. These proper
motions are used to determine the membership probabilities of stars in the
region, based on there being only one very extended physical cluster: NGC 1817.
With that aim, we have applied and compared parametric and non-parametric
approaches to cluster/field segregation. We have obtained a list of 169

Population dynamics of Agrobacterium vitis in two grapevine varieties during the vegetation period
In this work populations of Agrobacterium vitis were monitored within one year. Starting in the middle of May, the population density of A. vitis was screened every week in all parts of two-year-old MĂŒller-Thurgau and Riesling grapevines which were freed from A. vitis by thermotherapy and inoculated with A. vitis NW90. Every week, 5 plants of the two varieties were examined for A. vitis in new shoots, around the inoculation site, in one- and two-year-old parts of the stem, in the rootstock and in the roots. Beyond the inoculation site the A. vitis population density was too low for statistical evaluation of population dynamics. At the inoculation site a seasonal course of the A. vitis population was found in both grapevine varieties. The A. vitis population density was highest at the end of May, but little later it dropped to a low level during the sommer months. A second maximum of population density was determined in October which reached nearly the same value as in spring. Population density of A. vitis correlated to physiological changes of the grapevine plant during the vegetation period. Though the population dynamics of A. vitis followed parallel courses in both grapevine varieties, differences in the population density and in the onset of the autumn increase were determined. Thermocurrents and their Role in high Q Cavity Performance
Over the past years it became evident that the quality factor of a
superconducting cavity is not only determined by its surface preparation
procedure, but is also influenced by the way the cavity is cooled down.
Moreover, different data sets exists, some of them indicate that a slow
cool-down through the critical temperature is favourable while other data
states the exact opposite. Even so there where speculations and some models
about the role of thermo-currents and flux-pinning, the difference in behaviour
remained a mystery. In this paper we will for the first time present a
consistent theoretical model which we confirmed by data that describes the role
of thermo-currents, driven by temperature gradients and material transitions.
We will clearly show how they impact the quality factor of a cavity, discuss
our findings, relate it to findings at other labs and develop mitigation
strategies which especially addresses the issue of achieving high quality
factors of so-called nitrogen doped cavities in horizontal test
Performance of the EUDET-type beam telescopes
Test beam measurements at the test beam facilities of DESY have been
conducted to characterise the performance of the EUDET-type beam telescopes
originally developed within the EUDET project. The beam telescopes are equipped
with six sensor planes using MIMOSA26 monolithic active pixel devices. A
programmable Trigger Logic Unit provides trigger logic and time stamp
information on particle passage. Both data acquisition framework and offline
reconstruction software packages are available. User devices are easily
integrable into the data acquisition framework via predefined interfaces.
The biased residual distribution is studied as a function of the beam energy,
plane spacing and sensor threshold. Its standard deviation at the two centre
pixel planes using all six planes for tracking in a 6\,GeV
electron/positron-beam is measured to be
(2.88\,\pm\,0.08)\,\upmu\meter.Iterative track fits using the formalism of
General Broken Lines are performed to estimate the intrinsic resolution of the
individual pixel planes. The mean intrinsic resolution over the six sensors
used is found to be (3.24\,\pm\,0.09)\,\upmu\meter.With a 5\,GeV
electron/positron beam, the track resolution halfway between the two inner
pixel planes using an equidistant plane spacing of 20\,mm is estimated to
(1.83\,\pm\,0.03)\,\upmu\meter assuming the measured intrinsic resolution.
Towards lower beam energies the track resolution deteriorates due to increasing
multiple scattering. Threshold studies show an optimal working point of the
MIMOSA26 sensors at a sensor threshold of between five and six times their RMS
noise. Measurements at different plane spacings are used to calibrate the
amount of multiple scattering in the material traversed and allow for
corrections to the predicted angular scattering for electron beams
Crystallographically oriented magnetic ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles synthesized by Fe implantation into ZnO
In this paper, a correlation between structural and magnetic properties of Fe
implanted ZnO is presented. High fluence Fe^+ implantation into ZnO leads to
the formation of superparamagnetic alpha-Fe nanoparticles. High vacuum
annealing at 823 K results in the growth of alpha-Fe particles, but the
annealing at 1073 K oxidized the majority of the Fe nanoparticles. After a long
term annealing at 1073 K, crystallographically oriented ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles
were formed inside ZnO with the orientation relationship of
ZnFe2O4(111)[110]//ZnO(0001)[1120]. These ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles show a

Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) are key tools in the construction of lightweight authentication and key exchange protocols. So far, all existing PUF-based authentication protocols follow the same paradigm: A resource-constrained prover, holding a PUF, wants to authenticate to a resource-rich verifier, who has access to a database of pre-measured PUF challenge-response pairs (CRPs). In this paper we consider application scenarios where all previous PUF-based authentication schemes fail to work: The verifier is resource-constrained (and holds a PUF), while the prover is resource-rich (and holds a CRP-database). We construct the first and efficient PUF-based authentication protocol for this setting, which we call converse PUF-based authentication. We provide an extensive security analysis against passive adversaries, show that a minor modification also allows for authenticated key exchange and propose a concrete instantiation using controlled Arbiter PUFs
Unraveling the structural complexity in a single-stranded RNA tail: implications for efficient ligand binding in the prequeuosine riboswitch
Single-stranded RNAs (ssRNAs) are ubiquitous RNA elements that serve diverse functional roles. Much of our understanding of ssRNA conformational behavior is limited to structures in which ssRNA directly engages in tertiary interactions or is recognized by proteins. Little is known about the structural and dynamic behavior of free ssRNAs at atomic resolution. Here, we report the collaborative application of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and replica exchange molecular dynamics (REMD) simulations to characterize the 12 nt ssRNA tail derived from the prequeuosine riboswitch. NMR carbon spin relaxation data and residual dipolar coupling measurements reveal a flexible yet stacked core adopting an A-form-like conformation, with the level of order decreasing toward the terminal ends. An A-to-C mutation within the polyadenine tract alters the observed dynamics consistent with the introduction of a dynamic kink. Pre-ordering of the tail may increase the efficacy of ligand binding above that achieved by a random-coil ssRNA. The REMD simulations recapitulate important trends in the NMR data, but suggest more internal motions than inferred from the NMR analysis. Our study unmasks a previously unappreciated level of complexity in ssRNA, which we believe will also serve as an excellent model system for testing and developing computational force fields
