On the use of space photography for identifying transportation routes: A summary of problems

    Get PDF
It has been widely suggested that space photography may be used for updating maps of transportation networks. Proponents of the argument have suggested that color space photographs of the resolution obtained with Hasselblad 80 mm lenses (about 300 feet) contain enough useful information to update the extensions of major U. S. highways. The present study systematically documents for the Dallas-Fort Worth area the potential of such space photography in detecting, and to a lesser degree identifying, the existing road networks. Color separation plates and an enlargement of the color photograph were produced and all visible roads traced onto transparencies for study. Major roads and roads under construction were the most visible while lower class roads and roads in urban areas had the poorest return. Road width and classification were found to be the major determinant in visibility, varying from 100 per cent visible for divided highways to 15 per cent visible of bladed earth roads. In summary, space photographs of this resolution proved to be difficult to use for accurate road delineation. Only super highways in rural areas with the greatest road-width were completely identifiable, the width being about 1/3 that of the resolution cell

Active Learning in Business Education with, through, and about Technology

    Get PDF
In this paper we present a pedagogical approach used for a technology-based undergraduate business course during which students participated directly in the development of a Group Support System (GSS) facility. A GSS is a computer-based information system used to support intellectual, collaborative work and consists of personal computers connected via a local area network with software that enables group members to interactively generate, evaluate, and organize ideas, rank or vote on solutions, and perform other group tasks. This course was designed to teach students to work together within and across teams and to help them to develop and use critical thinking and applied problem-solving skills. In this paper the pedagogical approach and course structure used are described, the outcomes of the course are discussed, and recommendations are offered

Mathematical Formulation Model for a School Bus Routing Problem with Small Instance Data

This paper aims to describe the mathematical formulation model and an exact optimal solution analyses for a school bus routing problem with small instance data. The formulated model has been used  to compute the optimal solution of time spent by students at all bus stops, apart from that the bus stops are not necessary be linearly ordered. We also listed down five procedures of mathematical formulation model to reach an exact optimal solution for a school bus routing problem with small instance data. We assume that each bus has fixed pick up points, these generates the many possible routes for a bus, the number of routes that generated is equal to permutation of pick up points, for each route of a bus we computing the objective function and the route with smallest objective function value can be optimal route of a bus. The sample data from two schools located at Dar es Salaam are collected and validated in the model to shows the good performing of that model. The optimal solution results obtained shows that the students spent minimal minutes in new planned routes compared to current routes. Cost-efficient staffing under annualized hours

We study how flexibility in workforce capacity can be used to efficiently match capacity and demand. Flexibility in workforce capacity is introduced by the annualized hours regime. Annualized hours allow organizations to measure working time per year, instead of per month or per week. An additional source of flexibility is hiring employees with different contract types, like full-time, part-time, and min-max, and by hiring subcontractors. We propose a mathematical programming formulation that incorporates annualized hours and shows to be very flexible with regard to modeling various contract types. The objective of our model is to minimize salary cost, thereby covering workforce demand, and using annualized hours. Our model is able to address various business questions regarding tactical workforce planning problems, e.g., with regard to annualized hours, subcontracting, and vacation planning. In a case study for a Dutch hospital two of these business questions are addressed, and we demonstrate that applying annualized hours potentially saves up to 5.2% in personnel wages annually

Mind the Relationship: A Multi-Layered Ethical Framework for Citizen Science in Health

    Get PDF
There is a heated debate about what citizen science is and is not. We argue that instead of aiming at a definition of citizen science, we should reflect upon its ethical starting points. Based on our practical experiences with citizen science initiatives, we come up with an ethical framework that consists of two core values (respect and justice), five ethical desiderata (relationship between equals; recognition of each other's capacities, knowledge, and agency; reciprocity; openness for different goals; and openness for different research methods and paradigms) and two fundamental qualities (symmetry and transparency). The desiderata reflect ethically problematic practices, such as the use of citizens by academic scientists as mere sensors, and biases in the existing literature, such as labelling the projects that are initiated and led by citizens as “extreme”. The desiderata are supported by two ethical theories: care ethics and the capabilities approach. The aim of our ethical framework is to stimulate and facilitate reflection upon what needs to be considered when co-creating or assessing a citizen science initiative. Fundamentally, citizen science ought to be a humanizing endeavour unlocking the investigative capacities of humans. The ethical framework is meant to help reflect on this endeavour.</p

Behavioral metabolution: the adaptive and evolutionary potential of metabolism-based chemotaxis

    Get PDF
We use a minimal model of metabolism-based chemotaxis to show how a coupling between metabolism and behavior can affect evolutionary dynamics in a process we refer to as behavioral metabolution. This mutual influence can function as an in-the-moment, intrinsic evaluation of the adaptive value of a novel situation, such as an encounter with a compound that activates new metabolic pathways. Our model demonstrates how changes to metabolic pathways can lead to improvement of behavioral strategies, and conversely, how behavior can contribute to the exploration and fixation of new metabolic pathways. These examples indicate the potentially important role that the interplay between behavior and metabolism could have played in shaping adaptive evolution in early life and protolife. We argue that the processes illustrated by these models can be interpreted as an unorthodox instantiation of the principles of evolution by random variation and selective retention. We then discuss how the interaction between metabolism and behavior can facilitate evolution through (i) increasing exposure to environmental variation, (ii) making more likely the fixation of some beneficial metabolic pathways, (iii) providing a mechanism for in-the-moment adaptation to changes in the environment and to changes in the organization of the organism itself, and (iv) generating conditions that are conducive to speciatio
