Enhanced Surface Defect Detection Using Focused Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMATs)
Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMATs) are non-contact ultrasound transducers which function primarily via Lorentz force induction. Their non-contact nature allows for fast scanning, inspection of challenging surfaces, and performance in harsh environments. To meet industry demand, non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques need increasingly high resolution for the detection of smaller defects. For surface acoustic wave inspection of surface-breaking defects, using a higher frequency wave gives better
depth resolution. However, the EMAT coil width has to decrease to increase the frequency, leading to a trade off with the signal strength. The use of geometric focusing is showing promise for increasing ultrasound strength and defect imaging precision, overcoming some of the issues associated with the use of higher frequency surface acoustic waves. Understanding and optimising transducer design is essential to obtain optimal signal strength, high frequency operation, and the ability to operate at stand-off from the
sample. In this work multiple focused and unfocused EMAT coil configurations are presented. Focusing is seen to give significantly enhanced resolution for defects, with accurate detection of thin cracks, 0.2 wide, 2 mm length, 1.5 mm depth. Contestable adulthood: variability and disparity in markers for negotiating the transition to adulthood
Recent research has identified a discreet set of subjective markers that are seen as characterizing the transition to adulthood. The current study challenges this coherence by examining the disparity and variability in young people’s selection of such criteria. Four sentence-completion cues corresponding to four differentcontexts in which adult status might be contested were given to 156 British 16- to 17-year-olds. Their qualitative responses were analyzed to
explore patterns whilst capturing some of their richness and diversity. An astonishing amount of variability emerged, both within and between cued contexts.The implications of this variability for how the transition to adulthood is experienced are explored. The argument is made that markers of the transition to adulthood are not merely reflective of the bio–psycho–social development of
young people. Rather, adulthood here is seen as an essentially contested concept,located within the discursive interactional environment in which young people participate
Synthesis, characterization and thermochemistry of synthetic Pb–As, Pb–Cu and Pb–Zn jarosites
The enthalpy of formation from the elements of well characterized Pb-As, Pb-Cu, and Pb-Zn synthetic jarosites, corresponding to chemical formulas (H3O)0.68±0.03Pb0.32±0.002Fe2.86±0.14(SO4)1.69±0.08(AsO4)0.31±0.02(OH)5.59±0.28(H2O)0.41±0.02, (H3O)0.67±0.03Pb0.33±0.02Fe2.71±0.14Cu0.25±0.01(SO4)2±0.00(OH)5.96±0.30(H2O)0.04±0.002 and (H3O)0.57±0.03Pb0.43±0.02Fe2.70±0.14Zn0.21±0.01(SO4)2±0.00(OH)5.95±0.30(H2O)0.05±0.002, was measured by high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry and gave ΔH°f = -3691.2 ± 8.6 kJ/mol, ΔH°f = -3653.6 ± 8.2 kJ/mol, and ΔH°f = -3669.4 ± 8.4 kJ/mol, respectively. Using estimated entropies, the standard Gibbs free energy of formation from elements at 298 K ΔG°f of the three compounds were calculated to be -3164.8 ± 9.1 kJ/mol, -3131.4 ± 8.7 kJ/mol, and -3153.6 ± 8.9 kJ/mol, respectively. Based on these free energies, their logKsp values are -13.94 ± 1.89, -4.38 ± 1.81 and -3.75 ± 1.80, respectively. For this compounds, a log10{Pb2+} - pH diagram is presented. The diagram shows that the formation of Pb-As jarosite may decrease aqueous arsenic and lead concentrations to meet drinking water standards. The new thermodynamic data confirm that transformation of Pb-As jarosite to plumbojarosite is thermodynamically possible
Friedel oscillations in a two-band Hubbard model for CuO chains
Friedel oscillations induced by open boundary conditions in a two-band
Hubbard model for CuO chains are numerically studied. We find that for
physically realistic parameters and close to quarter filling, these
oscillations have a 2k_F modulation according with experimental results on
YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}. In addition, we predict that, for the same parameters, as
hole doping is reduced from quarter filling to half filling, Friedel
oscillations would acquire a 4k_F modulation, typical of a strongly correlated
electrons regime. The 4k_F modulation dominates also in the electron doped
region. The range of parameters varied is very broad, and hence the results
reported could apply to other cuprates and other strongly correlated compounds
with quasi-one dimensional structures. On a more theoretical side, we stress
the fact that the copper and oxygen subsystems should be described by two
different Luttinger liquid exponents.Comment: 7 pages, 7 eps figure
Spin-Glass State in
Magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat and positive muon spin
relaxation (\musr) measurements have been used to characterize the magnetic
ground-state of the spinel compound . We observe a spin-glass
transition of the S=1/2 spins below characterized
by a cusp in the susceptibility curve which suppressed when a magnetic field is
applied. We show that the magnetization of depends on the
magnetic histo Well below , the muon signal resembles the dynamical
Kubo-Toyabe expression reflecting that the spin freezing process in results Gaussian distribution of the magnetic moments. By means of

Life path analysis: scaling indicates priming effects of social and habitat factors on dispersal distances
1. Movements of many animals along a life-path can be separated into repetitive ones within home ranges and transitions between home ranges. We sought relationships of social and environmental factors with initiation and distance of transition movements in 114 buzzards Buteo buteo that were marked as nestlings with long-life radio tags.
2. Ex-natal dispersal movements of 51 buzzards in autumn were longer than for 30 later in their first year and than 35 extra-natal movements between home ranges after leaving nest areas. In the second and third springs, distances moved from winter focal points by birds that paired were the same or less than for unpaired birds. No post-nuptial movement exceeded 2 km.
3. Initiation of early ex-natal dispersal was enhanced by presence of many sibs, but also by lack of worm-rich loam soils. Distances travelled were greatest for birds from small broods and with relatively little short grass-feeding habitat near the nest. Later movements were generally enhanced by the absence of loam soils and short grassland, especially with abundance of other buzzards and probable poor feeding habitats (heathland, long grass).
4. Buzzards tended to persist in their first autumn where arable land was abundant, but subsequently showed a strong tendency to move from this habitat.
5. Factors that acted most strongly in ½-km buffers round nests, or round subsequent focal points, usually promoted movement compared with factors acting at a larger scale. Strong relationships between movement distances and environmental characteristics in ½-km buffers, especially during early ex-natal dispersal, suggested that buzzards became primed by these factors to travel far.
6. Movements were also farthest for buzzards that had already moved far from their natal nests, perhaps reflecting genetic predisposition, long-term priming or poor habitat beyond the study area
Aerosolized Amiloride for the Treatment of Lung Disease in Cystic Fibrosis

Quantum well engineering in InGaN/GaN core-shell nanorod structures
We report the ability to control relative InN incorporation in InGaN/GaN quantum wells (QWs) grown on the semi-polar and non-polar facets of a core-shell nanorod LED structure by varying the growth conditions. A study of the cathodoluminescence emitted from series of structures with different growth temperatures and pressures for the InGaN QW layer revealed that increasing the growth pressure had the effect of increasing InN incorporation on the semi-polar facets, while increasing the growth temperature improves the uniformity of light emission from the QWs on the non-polar facets
Choice of tracers for the evaluation of spray deposits
Tracer substances, used to evaluate spraying effectiveness, ordinarily modify the surface tension of aqueous solutions. This study aimed to establish a method of using tracers to evaluate distribution and amount of spray deposits, adjusted to the surface tension of the spraying solution. The following products were tested: 0.15% Brilliant Blue, 0.15% Saturn Yellow in 0.015% Vixilperse lignosulfonate, and 0.005% sodium fluorescein, and mixtures of Brilliant Blue plus Saturn Yellow and Brilliant Blue plus sodium fluorescein at the same concentrations. Solutions were deposited on citrus leaves and stability was determined by measuring fluorescence and optical density of solutions without drying, dried in the dark and exposed to sunlight for 2, 4 and 8 h. These values were compared to those obtained directly in water. The static surface tension of the tracer solution was determined by weighing droplets formed during a period of 20 to 40 seconds. The Brilliant Blue and Saturn Yellow mixture at 0.15% was stable under all conditions tested. It was not absorbed by the leaves and maintained the same surface tension as that of water, thus permitting concentration adjustment to the same levels used for agrochemical products, and allowing the development of a qualitative method based on visual evaluation of the distribution of the pigment under ultraviolet light and of a quantitative method based on the determination of the amount of the dye deposited in the same solution. Spray deposition could be evaluated at different surface tensions of the spraying solution, simulating the effect of agrochemical formulations
