This article discusses some of the most
common problems presented by wind instruments
during their study, related to body
use and breathing, which prevent them
from carrying out the process of learning
the instrument in a comfortable way and,
at the same time, do not allow them to express
their full musical potential. In order to
solve these problems, the possibilities and
benefits offered by the physiotherapeutic
technique of Françoise MéziÚres are discussed,
not only to modify the situation exposed
in the case of wind instruments students,
but also for the professionals of the
same. It is a technique that presents a novel
conception within physiotherapy, which by
having a holistic view of the functioning of
the body, allows to rebalance it and return it
to its natural state, being able to then carry
out the practice of the wind instrument of
the most appropriate and comfortable way
for the individual
A simple method for fabricating phase-shifted fibre Bragg gratings with flexible choice of centre wavelength
A simple technique for fabricating phase-shifted fibre Bragg gratings (PSFBGs)
without the use of a phase-shifted phase mask is presented. Two, 3-mm long,
standard fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) were inscribed sequentially in singlemode
fibre at the same Bragg wavelength such that the FBGs physically overlapped by
one grating period. This induces a spectral-hole in the middle of the reflection
spectrum of a standard FBG, equivalent to a Ï-phase shifted FBG. The flexibility
of the technique in writing PSFBGs at any choice of wavelength is demonstrated.
The results show that PSFBG devices produced by this method are highly
reproducible and the process is fas
The study of the relationships between literature and history, whose existence all we affirm, is a field of reflection extremely broad and complex. For this reason, instead of dealing with a specific aspect of the issue, I would like to point out a series of theoretical elements in the form of questions, suggestions or clarifications from the positions of the sociocritical
Procedural-Reasoning Architecture for Applied Behavior Analysis-based Instructions
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability affecting as many as 1 in every 88 children. While there is no known cure for ASD, there are known behavioral and developmental interventions, based on demonstrated efficacy, that have become the predominant treatments for improving social, adaptive, and behavioral functions in children.
Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA)-based early childhood interventions are evidence based, efficacious therapies for autism that are widely recognized as effective approaches to remediation of the symptoms of ASD. They are, however, labor intensive and consequently often inaccessible at the recommended levels.
Recent advancements in socially assistive robotics and applications of virtual intelligent agents have shown that children with ASD accept intelligent agents as effective and often preferred substitutes for human therapists. This research is nascent and highly experimental with no unifying, interdisciplinary, and integral approach to development of intelligent agents based therapies, especially not in the area of behavioral interventions.
Motivated by the absence of the unifying framework, we developed a conceptual procedural-reasoning agent architecture (PRA-ABA) that, we propose, could serve as a foundation for ABA-based assistive technologies involving virtual, mixed or embodied agents, including robots. This architecture and related research presented in this disser- tation encompass two main areas: (a) knowledge representation and computational model of the behavioral aspects of ABA as applicable to autism intervention practices, and (b) abstract architecture for multi-modal, agent-mediated implementation of these practices
The effect of consciousness of social, political and historical context on adjustment of undergraduate students at the University of Cape Town : a qualitative study
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 89-94).It has been shown that black students are generally not finding the academic success in South African universities that would confirm a truly equitable educational system. In response to this, universities in South Africa have taken several different measures to bridge this gap and provide the support needed for these students to thrive through various programmes that provide supplementary support and extended degree programmes to educationally disadvantaged students
Visual Perceptual Difficulties and Under-Achievement at School in a Large Community-Based Sample of Children
Difficulties with visual perception (VP) are often described in children with neurological or developmental problems. However, there are few data regarding the range of visual perceptual abilities in populations of normal children, or on the impact of these abilities on children's day-to-day functioning. Methods Data were obtained for 4512 participants in an ongoing birth cohort study (Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children; ALSPAC). The children's mothers responded to questions designed to elicit indications of visual perceptual difficulties or immaturity, when their children were aged 13 years. We examined associations with standardised school test results in reading and in mathematics at age 1314 years (SATS-KS3), accounting for potential confounders including IQ. Results Three underlying factors explained half the variance in the VP question responses. These correlated best with questions on interpreting cluttered scenes; guidance of movement and face recognition. The adjusted parameter estimates (95% CI) for the cluttered-scenes factor (0.05; 0.02 to 0.08; p<0.001) suggested positive associations with the reading test results whilst that for the guidance-of-movement factor (0.03; 0.00 to 0.06; p = 0.026) suggested positive association with the mathematics results. The raw scores were associated with both test results. Discussion VP abilities were widely distributed in this sample of 13-year old children. Lower levels of VP function were associated with under-achievement in reading and in mathematics. Simple interventions can help children with VP difficulties, so research is needed into practicable, cost-effective strategies for identification and assessment, so that support can be targeted appropriately
