Postgraduate research supervision:An 'agreed' conceptual view of good practice through derived metaphors

    Get PDF
The paper explores the role of the postgraduate supervisor through advising, mentoring, and monitoring for the varied and complex process towards successful doctoral thesis completion. There is a scarcity of research into this important area, and we therefore undertake a comprehensive literature review to determine the current state of knowledge and international approaches. This involved an initial analysis of policy documents from European and Australian universities to provide insights into institutional norms. Primary data collection was then collected through surveys and personal interviews with a range of experienced academics involved in postgraduate supervision. We identify three metaphors related to a 'machine', 'coach' and 'journey' as critical perspectives towards professional student engagement. Our findings are believed to be of benefit to academics and doctoral candidates involved in challenging and original research

USING BOTH SOCIOLOGICAL AND ECONOMIC INCENTIVES TO REDUCE MORAL HAZARD

Economists tend to focus on monetary incentives. In the model developed here, both sociological and economic incentives are used to diminish the apparent moral hazard problem existing in commodity grading. Training that promotes graders' response to sociological incentives is shown to increase expected benefits. The model suggests that this training be increased up to the point where the marginal benefit due to training equals its marginal cost. It may be more economical to influence the grader's behavior by creating cognitive dissonance through training and rules rather than by using economic incentives alone.Marketing,

The objective of the article is to show how quality tools help the management of the supply chain in the agricultural sector, in this way quality management of the supply chain will improve operating results in companies that produce asparagus. The company is located in Trujillo, Peru; where the managers of each area were interviewed to determine the practices that will be used in the agribusiness sector. Through the review of the literature, the practices that will be used are supplier relationship management, operations management, and human resources management, the right design and application of these practices will achieve improvements in operational results. The proposed model, Supply Chain Quality Management, is an innovative method that will have a positive impact on the agribusiness supply chain. In addition, quality management in the supply chain is an unusual topic to find in research. Finally, asparagus is a high consumption vegetable and this study provides a great value in increasing economic indicators and competitiveness within the industry

Simultaneous real-time visible and infrared video with single-pixel detectors

Conventional cameras rely upon a pixelated sensor to provide spatial resolution. An alternative approach replaces the sensor with a pixelated transmission mask encoded with a series of binary patterns. Combining knowledge of the series of patterns and the associated filtered intensities, measured by single-pixel detectors, allows an image to be deduced through data inversion. In this work we extend the concept of a ‘single-pixel camera’ to provide continuous real-time video at 10 Hz , simultaneously in the visible and short-wave infrared, using an efficient computer algorithm. We demonstrate our camera for imaging through smoke, through a tinted screen, whilst performing compressive sampling and recovering high-resolution detail by arbitrarily controlling the pixel-binning of the masks. We anticipate real-time single-pixel video cameras to have considerable importance where pixelated sensors are limited, allowing for low-cost, non-visible imaging systems in applications such as night-vision, gas sensing and medical diagnostics

    \u27Academic Capitalism\u27: Universities\u27 Consultancy Agendas

Recent debate in Higher Education (HE) has attempted to identify the legitimate components at the core of academic scholarship. Teaching and research, are recognized activities of modern academia; although their nexus is at times questioned. This paper seeks to understand the role of a rising academic activity, academic consultancy, and to portray its impact onto HE. A two-stage research design including a web-based survey and semi-structured interviews was implemented to gather the experiences and perceptions of academics in information technology/information systems/information management (IT/IS/IM) in the United Kingdom (UK). The findings reveal that the majority of consultancy activities undertaken by the study participants are of small scale, of technical nature and in areas strongly related to the research interest of the academics in questions. Although a shared understanding of what consultancy is can be found among academics, the perception of how consultancy impacts teaching practices and research differs significantly within research-led or teaching-led universities. Such findings are significant as they portray entrepreneurship as a contributing factor that may help universities to shape their policy, culture and structure

The purpose of this research is to show consumer behavior towards new technologies aimed at the shopping experience in a Retail store. Augmented reality technology is an immersion of the real and the virtual that in recent years has been gaining more notoriety in the technology community and for the retail world it is not alien to this technology, added to the adaptation in mobile devices, which together they will provide an immersive experience for the customer when visiting the facilities of a retail store. This new way of shopping is based on enhancing this technology of interactivity with the customer, the purpose of which is to attract customers as well as increase sales. This article focuses on the conceptual processes of a physical environment, decentralizing traditional sales channels and providing an interactive environment, taking the role of the customer as the protagonist. In this context, the advantages and disadvantages of using augmented reality in a retail environment will be analyzed, designing prototypes for use in mobile devices, exploring the potential of this type of technology. The work was developed using the waterfall methodology and with the guidance of PMBOK, developing each of the 5 phases of the project.Campus Lima Centr
