Strategies for Fighting Back: Globalization and the City
This paper looks to identify how cities are affected by globalization. In order to attract increased investment, cities have looked towards attracting global capital. This has a homogenizing effect upon unique places of the world by imposing standardized forms of capitalist economics. This paper identifies globalization, how cities attract global capital, and how unique places in various cultures are affected by globalization. The solution proposed to combat the ill effects of globalization is to bring together global and local forces in a collaborative atmosphere. This allows for cities to receive global investment while also accounting for local culture and uniqueness
Phase Retrieval in Incoherent Diffractive Imaging using higher-order photon correlation functions
To obtain spatial information about an arbitrary object in x-ray structure
analysis, the standard method is to measure the intensity in the far field,
i.e., the first-order photon correlation function of the coherently scattered
x-ray photons (coherent diffractive imaging). Recently, it was suggested to
record alternatively the incoherently scattered photons and measure the
second-order photon correlation function to reconstruct the geometry of the
unknown object (incoherent diffractive imaging). Yet, besides various
advantages of the latter method, both techniques suffer from the so-called
phase retrieval problem. Lately, an ab-initio phase retrieval algorithm to
reconstruct the phase of the so-called structure factor of the scattering
objects based on the third-order photon correlation function was reported. The
algorithm makes use of the so-called closure phase, which contains important,
yet incomplete phase information, well-known from triple correlations and their
bispectrum in speckle masking and astronomy applications. Here, we provide a
detailed analysis of the underlying scheme and quantities in the context of
x-ray structure analysis. In particular, we explicitly calculate the
third-order photon correlation function in a full quantum mechanical treatment
and discuss the uniqueness of the closure phase equations constructed from it.
In this context, we recapitulate the sign problem of the closure phase and how
it can be lifted using redundant information. We further show how the algorithm
can be improved using even higher-order photon correlation functions, e.g., the
fourth-order correlation function, delivering new phase relations appearing in
the four-point correlations

Cheetah-cub-S: Steering of a Quadruped Robot using Trunk Motion
In Cheetah-cub-S we realized an efficiant concept by implementing a spine-like structure with one DoF into a quadruped, modular and mobile platform. We increased maneuverability dramatically compared to a robot with rigid spine, while keeping controlling effort low by using intelligent mechanics. Therefore, it is possible to steer via trunk motion without changing the gait or corresponding parameters. The robot weights 1160 g at 0.1 m (height), 0.105 m (width) and 0.205 m (length). Based on qualitative tests, it is able to run 0.36 m/s and turn within a radius of 0.51 m (equivalent to 2.48 body lengths) at 0.31 m/s (equivalent to 34/s). Furthermore, we could steer the quadruped around three objects in a 7.13 m (23 s at 0.31 m/s) slalom within our test area. Due to its modularity, Cheetah-cub-S is a versatile mobile platform and components such as the spine segment, legs, motors or steering mechanism can be exchanged

Alterations of lipid metabolism in Wilson disease
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Wilson disease (WD) is an inherited disorder of human copper metabolism, characterised by accumulation of copper predominantly in the liver and brain, leading to severe hepatic and neurological disease. Interesting findings in animal models of WD (Atp7b-/- and LEC rats) showed altered lipid metabolism with a decrease in the amount of triglycerides and cholesterol in the serum. However, serum lipid profile has not been investigated in large human WD patient cohorts to date.</p> <p>Patients and Methods</p> <p>This cohort study involved 251 patients examined at the Heidelberg and Dresden (Germany) University Hospitals. Patients were analysed on routine follow-up examinations for serum lipid profile, including triglycerides, cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL). Data on these parameters at time of diagnosis were retrieved by chart review where available. For statistical testing, patients were subgrouped by sex, manifestation (hepatic, neurological, mixed and asymptomatic) and treatment (D-penicillamine, trientine, zinc or combination).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A significant difference in total serum cholesterol was found in patients with hepatic symptoms, which diminished under therapy. No alterations were observed for HDL, LDL and triglycerides.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Contradictory to previous reports using WD animal models (Atp7b-/- and LEC rats), the most obvious alteration in our cohort was a lower serum cholesterol level in hepatic-affected patients, which might be related to liver injury. Our data suggested unimpaired cholesterol metabolism in Wilson disease under therapy, independent of the applied medical treatment.</p
