Immune system gene polymorphisms associated with severe dengue in Latin America: a systematic review

One of the main challenges in the clinical management of dengue is the early identification of cases that could progress to severe forms of the disease. A biomarker that may enable this identification is the presence of genetic polymorphisms in genes associated with immune responses. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review of the Latin American literature on these genes. An electronic literature search was carried out in PubMed, Scopus, Lilacs, and the Virtual Health Library, and reference lists of systematic reviews in the area. Case-control studies conducted in Latin American countries examining at least one form of genetic polymorphism related to immune responses against severe dengue were included. In total, 424 articles were identified and 26 were included in this systematic review. Of the 26 selected articles, 16 reported polymorphisms associated with the risk of developing severe dengue (Risk); Similarly, 16 articles reported polymorphisms associated with a decreased risk of severe dengue (Protective). The final analysis revealed that multiple polymorphisms in immune system genes were early markers of the progression of dengue in Latin Americans and found that polymorphisms of the TNF-alpha gene may have a critical role in dengue pathogenesis

Tendencias de la investigación en Ingeniería Ambiental

Esta obra incluye las memorias del Simposio “Tendencias de la Investigación en Ingeniería Ambiental”, organizado por el Grupo de Investigaciones y Mediciones Ambientales (GEMA), realizado en la Universidad de Medellín en agosto de 2007. El texto está conformado por 14 capítulos agrupados en cuatro partes. The Research Journey as a Challenge Towards New Trends

The academic community of the department of Risaralda, in its permanent interest in evidencing the results of the research processes that are carried out from the Higher Education Institutions and as a product of the VI meeting of researchers of the department of Risaralda held in November 2021 presents its work: “The journey of research as a challenge towards new trends”, which reflects the result of the latest research and advances in different lines of knowledge in Agricultural Sciences, Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Technology and Information Sciences, which seek to solve and meet the demands of the different sectors. This book presents, through reflection, the relevance, timeliness and necessity of love, empathy and prosocial behaviors within the framework of the professional and disciplinary work of the authors. Productos vestimentarios para niños con discapacidad cognitiva. Proyecto funcionalidades diversas

In Colombia there is variety of technical aids for persons in situation of disability, but from the perspective of costume design the offer of products to prevent deficiencies, activity limitations or restrictions in the participation in various activities is very little. Following from the above, the faculties of Costume design and Industrial design at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, together with a group of students, developed a project whose objective was the design of inclusive dress objects that support physical-cognitive habilitation and rehabilitation processes in children with cerebral motor failure, belonging to the Lupines Foundation, in the city of Medellin.In the framework of the project, four functional prototypes were designed. These permitted to support learning processes such as crawling, running, fine motricity and cross pattern thanks to their versatility in accordance with their manufacturing possibilities, low-technology processes and low-cost materials. This is important knowledge, since the prototypes will allow children to reach high degrees of autonomy.A combination of approaches of universal design as well as User- Centered Design (UCD) were used for the development of the project. In first place, it is proposed to determine the profile of the user as well as their anatomical, biomechanical, anthropometric, cognitive and socio-cultural characteristics. After this, an interdisciplinary work with professionals in the areas of physiotherapy, social work and special educators of the Lupines Foundation was established in order to validate the progress in the projects.Functional validation, usability and safety tests were developed during this process. The result had a positive impact in the quality of life of a group of children who did not have products specifically designed to support development programs, based on the integrity of the child in physical space.En Colombia se encuentra variedad de ayudas técnicas para perso­nas en situación de discapacidad, pero desde la perspectiva del diseño de vestuario es muy poca la oferta de productos para prevenir deficiencias, limitaciones en la actividad o restricciones en la participación en diversas actividades. A propósito de lo anterior, las Facultades de Diseño de Vestuario y Diseño Industrial de la Uni­versidad Pontificia Bolivariana, junto con un grupo de estudiantes, desarrollaron un proyecto cuyo objetivo fue el diseño de objetos vestimentarios inclusivos que apoyaran procesos de habilitación y rehabilitación físico-cognitivas, en niños con insuficiencia motora de origen cerebral, pertenecientes a la Fundación Lupines, en la ciudad de Medellín.En el marco del proyecto se diseñaron cuatro prototipos funcionales,que por su versatilidad en función de sus posibilidades de fabricación, con procesos de baja tecnología y materiales de bajo costo, permitió apoyar procesos de aprendizaje de gateo, marcha, motricidad fina y patrón cruzado; conocimientos importantes, ya que les permitirán a los niños alcanzar grados altos de autonomía.Para el desarrollo del proyecto se utilizó una combinación de enfoques de diseño universal y Diseño Centrado en el Usuario (DCU), que propone en primera instancia determinar el perfil del usuario y establecer sus características anatómi­cas, biomecánicas, antropométricas, cognitivas y socioculturales. Una vez hecho esto, se estableció un trabajo interdisciplinario con los profesionales de las áreas de fisioterapia, trabajo social y educadoras especiales de la Fundación Lupines, para validar los avances en los proyectos.Durante este proceso se desarrollaron pruebas de validación funcional, usabilidad y seguridad. Con el resultado se logró impactar positivamente la calidad de vida de un grupo de niños que no contaban con productos diseñados específi­camente para el apoyo a los programas de desarrollo, basado en la integralidad del niño en área física

Investigación formativa. Proyecto de aula

La vicerrectoría de Investigaciones comparte con la comunidad universitaria la publicación Investigación Formativa en la Universidad de Medellín: un encuentro entre la investigación y la docencia. El texto recoge reflexiones de los profesores investigadores que atendieron la invitación a participar en la V Feria de la Creatividad –año 2008-, Espacio concebido para divulgar logros y resultados de los programas en relación con la investigación formativa. Alrededor de la actividad estudiantil, los profesores investigadores en la lógica de su trabajo curricular pudieron compartir, a través de sus ponencias, la exposición sobre trabajos de sistematización del conocimiento, bibliografías sobre temas, estudios de casos, entre otros resultados de investigación formativa. Todo lo anterior, con el propósito de reconocer y hacer visible su esfuerzo por impactar los Planes de Formación con los resultados de la investigación científica. De modo especial, valoramos el esfuerzo de los profesores investigadores quienes se interesaron por plasmar y dejar constancia en sus reflexiones de las diversas estrategias y metodologías que implementan para provocar mejores y más significativos aprendizajes. El texto se constituye en un punto de partida para continuar explorando otras posibilidades de aprovechamiento e impacto de la actividad investigativa de los profesores en su trabajo cotidiano, propio del aula de clase, y por ello la publicación valida la necesaria relación investigación-docencia, en la que la primera promueve la generación de conocimiento, y la segunda, la aplicación a los procesos de renovación curricular que vive la Universidad.
