This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Cambridge University Press via the DOI in this record. This chapter examines some key developments in Irish-American literary relations from the middle of the century to the 1980s. It begins by arguing that this was a period when Irish-American literary relations acquired a new complexity – in both the reception of the work of Irish writers in the United States and the emergence of a distinctive and authoritative Irish-American voice. It then goes on to examine the distinctive contribution of Irish and Irish-American writers to the development of the short story as a form in the United States, which was a process mediated and galvanised by the literary magazine The New Yorker, the natural habitat of writers such as John O’Hara and Maeve Brennan and, later, Elizabeth Cullinan. The chapter then discusses the expansion of the Irish-American literary canon from mid-century onwards and explores how key figures such as Edward McSorley, James T. Farrell, Mary McCarthy and Mary Gordon sought to engage with or contest influential Irish and Irish-American literary inheritances. These writers’ commitment to social realism invented a new version of Irish-America during these decades of cultural transition, one that often deliberately set itself apart from previous received scripts and mythmaking

This is the final version. Available from Cambridge University Press via the DOI in this record. This chapter addresses a central dynamic in contemporary Irish culture, the relationship between Ireland and the rest of the world. A long history of emigration has made for a massive global Irish diaspora. These decades have seen the emergence of new critical approaches to the writing and culture of the Irish diaspora in Britain, the United States, and across the world. In addition, a number of Irish writers have spent much of their time writing about places other than Ireland (whether or not they happened to be living there at the time). This chapter takes on two related themes: recent Irish literature’s interest in representing spaces and conditions outside of Ireland, and the relationship between contemporary Irish literature and the global Irish diaspora

Irish American Women: Forgotten First-Wave Feminists

Numerous books have been written about American feminism and its influence on education and society. But none have recognized the key role played by Irish American women in exposing injustice and protecting their rights. Certainly their literary heritage, inherent knowledge of English, and membership in the single largest ethnic group gave them an advantage. But their dual positions as colonized, second-class citizens of their country and their religion gave them their political edge, a trait that has been evident since the Irish first stepped off the boat and that continues to this day. This essay focuses on the first wave of these feminist messages by introducing Irish American writers and activists who emerged between the 1830s and 1960s. It locates Irish American women’s influence in three different, yet overlapping milieus—political activism, journalism, and literature

Perspective: Optimising care and outcomes for people with type 2 diabetes - lessons from a translational research program on insulin initiation in general practice

BackgroundClinical inertia, failure to intensify treatment according to evidence-based guidelines, leads to prolonged, avoidable hyperglycaemia in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). This is a challenge for General Practice (GP) and Primary Care, where most people with T2D receive most of their care. Sustained, integrated translational research programs are needed to embed effective treatments in routine practice, yet many challenges exist to developing such programs. ObjectivesTo explore challenges and facilitators to implementing a translational research program focused on insulin initiation and titration among people with T2D in GP and to identify key factors important to support and sustain such translation research in primary care.Operationalising a program of translational work in primary careWe describe a series of studies on insulin initiation and titration in GP including theory and qualitative work (Phase 1), a small feasibility and acceptability pilot (Phase 2), a large scale pilot (Phase 3), and a pragmatic cluster randomised trial currently under way (Phase 4). We used mixed methods to explore practice level implementation issues, and reflective investigator discussions to explore broader research program susta
