    Semiconductive and Photoconductive Properties of the Single Molecule Magnets Mn12_{12}-Acetate and Fe8_8Br8_8

    Resistivity measurements are reported for single crystals of Mn12_{12}-Acetate and Fe8_8Br8_8. Both materials exhibit a semiconductor-like, thermally activated behavior over the 200-300 K range. The activation energy, EaE_a, obtained for Mn12_{12}-Acetate was 0.37 ±\pm 0.05 eV, which is to be contrasted with the value of 0.55 eV deduced from the earlier reported absorption edge measurements and the range of 0.3-1 eV from intramolecular density of states calculations, assuming 2Ea2E_a= EgE_g, the optical band gap. For Fe8_8Br8_8, EaE_a was measured as 0.73 ±\pm 0.1 eV, and is discussed in light of the available approximate band structure calculations. Some plausible pathways are indicated based on the crystal structures of both lattices. For Mn12_{12}-Acetate, we also measured photoconductivity in the visible range; the conductivity increased by a factor of about eight on increasing the photon energy from 632.8 nm (red) to 488 nm (blue). X-ray irradiation increased the resistivity, but EaE_a was insensitive to exposure.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

    Youth representations of environmental protest

    A necessary condition for a functioning democracy is the participation of its citizens, including its youth. This is particularly true for political participation in environmental decisions because these decisions can have intergenerational consequences. In this article we examine young people’s beliefs about one form of political participation - protest - in the context of communities affected by fracking and associated anti-fracking protest, and discuss the implications of these representations for education. Drawing on focus groups with 121 young people (age 15-19) in 5 schools and colleges near sites which have experienced anti-fracking protest in England and Northern Ireland, we find young people well-informed about avenues for formal and non-formal political participation against a background of disillusionment with formal political processes and varying levels of support for protest. We find representations of protest as disruptive, divisive, extreme, less desirable than other forms of participation, and ineffective in bringing about change but effective in awareness-raising. These representations are challenging, not least because the way protest is interpreted is critical to the way people think and act in the world. These representations of environmental protest must be challenged through formal education in order to safeguard the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and ensure that the spirit of Article 11 of the UK Human Rights Act is protected

    Velocity-space sensitivity of the time-of-flight neutron spectrometer at JET

    The velocity-space sensitivities of fast-ion diagnostics are often described by so-called weight functions. Recently, we formulated weight functions showing the velocity-space sensitivity of the often dominant beam-target part of neutron energy spectra. These weight functions for neutron emission spectrometry (NES) are independent of the particular NES diagnostic. Here we apply these NES weight functions to the time-of-flight spectrometer TOFOR at JET. By taking the instrumental response function of TOFOR into account, we calculate time-of-flight NES weight functions that enable us to directly determine the velocity-space sensitivity of a given part of a measured time-of-flight spectrum from TOFOR

    New insights into the genetic etiology of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias

    Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele

    Relationship of edge localized mode burst times with divertor flux loop signal phase in JET

    A phase relationship is identified between sequential edge localized modes (ELMs) occurrence times in a set of H-mode tokamak plasmas to the voltage measured in full flux azimuthal loops in the divertor region. We focus on plasmas in the Joint European Torus where a steady H-mode is sustained over several seconds, during which ELMs are observed in the Be II emission at the divertor. The ELMs analysed arise from intrinsic ELMing, in that there is no deliberate intent to control the ELMing process by external means. We use ELM timings derived from the Be II signal to perform direct time domain analysis of the full flux loop VLD2 and VLD3 signals, which provide a high cadence global measurement proportional to the voltage induced by changes in poloidal magnetic flux. Specifically, we examine how the time interval between pairs of successive ELMs is linked to the time-evolving phase of the full flux loop signals. Each ELM produces a clear early pulse in the full flux loop signals, whose peak time is used to condition our analysis. The arrival time of the following ELM, relative to this pulse, is found to fall into one of two categories: (i) prompt ELMs, which are directly paced by the initial response seen in the flux loop signals; and (ii) all other ELMs, which occur after the initial response of the full flux loop signals has decayed in amplitude. The times at which ELMs in category (ii) occur, relative to the first ELM of the pair, are clustered at times when the instantaneous phase of the full flux loop signal is close to its value at the time of the first ELM

    Prediction of disability-free survival in healthy older people

    Prolonging survival in good health is a fundamental societal goal. However, the leading determinants of disability-free survival in healthy older people have not been well established. Data from ASPREE, a bi-national placebo-controlled trial of aspirin with 4.7 years median follow-up, was analysed. At enrolment, participants were healthy and without prior cardiovascular events, dementia or persistent physical disability. Disability-free survival outcome was defined as absence of dementia, persistent disability or death. Selection of potential predictors from amongst 25 biomedical, psychosocial and lifestyle variables including recognized geriatric risk factors, utilizing a machine-learning approach. Separate models were developed for men and women. The selected predictors were evaluated in a multivariable Cox proportional hazards model and validated internally by bootstrapping. We included 19,114 Australian and US participants aged ≥65 years (median 74 years, IQR 71.6–77.7). Common predictors of a worse prognosis in both sexes included higher age, lower Modified Mini-Mental State Examination score, lower gait speed, lower grip strength and abnormal (low or elevated) body mass index. Additional risk factors for men included current smoking, and abnormal eGFR. In women, diabetes and depression were additional predictors. The biased-corrected areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves for the final prognostic models at 5 years were 0.72 for men and 0.75 for women. Final models showed good calibration between the observed and predicted risks. We developed a prediction model in which age, cognitive function and gait speed were the strongest predictors of disability-free survival in healthy older people.     Biogeography of terrestrial and freshwater vertebrates from the late Cretaceous (Campanian) Western Interior of North America

    Previous biogeographic studies of late Cretaceous (late Campanian) vertebrate faunas in the Western Interior Basin (WIB) of North America have suggested the presence of faunal and floral provincialism, characterized by distinct northern and southern 'biomes.' However, the "provincialism hypothesis" has been questioned based largely on the contention that the investigated faunas were recovered from a series of diachronous, time-transgressive deposits, and are therefore non-correlative.\ud \ud Extensive work in several fossiliferous units of late Campanian age, including the Dinosaur Park, Judith River, Two Medicine, Kaiparowits, Fruitland/Kirtland, and Aguja formations, has greatly increased understanding of WIB vertebrate faunas and their chronostratigraphic relationships. Here updated and greatly expanded faunal and chronostratigraphic datasets are utilized to undertake an extensive biogeographic analysis of these six terrestrial fossiliferous formations within the WIB of North America. Quantitative biogeographic comparisons of the formations and their constituent faunas are conducted using four statistical methods: Analysis of Similarity, Q-mode cluster analysis, Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity, and Correspondence Analysis.\ud \ud The results of this study provide strong support for highly divergent faunas in northern and southern regions of the WIB, with a latitudinal faunal gradient as an interface. Yet the nature of the interface between these faunas remains unclear, with possibilities including: 1) two or more discrete provinces separated by a zone (or zones) of faunal mixing; and 2) a continuous latitudinal gradient or cline, with no discrete zones of endemism. Lacking evidence of any physiographic barrier to north–south dispersal, climatic variation within the WIB is regarded as the most likely explanation for the overarching biogeographic patterns observed for late Campanian vertebrate taxa

    EU-beleid inzake ggo's : een quick scan van de economische gevolgen

    De teelt van genetische gemodificeerde (gg-)landbouwproducten heeft vanaf 1996 een snelle groei ondergaan, met name in Noord- en Zuid-Amerika. In de Europese Unie (EU) is de teelt van gg-gewassen nog tamelijk beperkt. Het gebruik van gg-gewassen in de EU neemt daarentegen snel toe. De afgelopen jaren zijn er in toenemende mate problemen geweest met de invoer in de EU van (gg-)grondstoffen voor levensmiddelen en diervoeder vanuit belangrijke importerende landen. Dit wordt veroorzaakt door de asynchrone toelating van de EU van gg-gewassen, gekoppeld aan het feit dat er een nultolerantiedrempel geldt voor de aanwezigheid van ggo's die nog niet in de EU zijn goedgekeurd. Dit EU-beleid heeft inmiddels geleid tot problemen met de invoer van grondstoffen vanuit exporterende landen waar meer ggo's zijn goedgekeurd of in ontwikkeling zijn. In dit rapport wordt gesteld dat problemen in de nabije toekomst urgenter zullen worden. Een en ander kan een negatieve invloed hebben op de Europese toevoer van grondstoffen en de economische positie van de Europese landbouw- en voedingssecto
