    A Modeling approach for analysis and improvement of spindle-holder-tool assembly dynamics

    The most important information required for chatter stability analysis is the dynamics of the involved structures, i.e. the frequency response functions (FRFs) which are usually determined experimentally. In this study, the tool point FRF of a spindle-holder-tool assembly is analytically determined by using the receptance coupling and structural modification techniques. Timoshenko’s beam model is used for increased accuracy. The spindle is also modeled analytically with elastic supports representing the bearings. The mathematical model is used to determine the effects of different parameters on the tool point FRF and to identify contact dynamics from experimental measurements. The applications of the model are demonstrated and the predictions are verified experimentally

    Achieving transparency and maximizing scattering with metamaterial-coated conducting cylinders

    In this work, the electromagnetic interaction of plane waves with infinitely long metamaterial-coated conducting cylinders is considered. Different from "conjugate" pairing of double-positive (DPS) and double-negative (DNG) or epsilon-negative (ENG) and mu-negative (MNG) concentric cylinders, achieving transparency and maximizing scattering are separately achieved by covering perfect electric conductor (PEC) cylinders with simple (i.e., homogeneous, isotropic, and linear) metamaterial coatings. The appropriate constitutive parameters of such metamaterials are investigated for Transverse Magnetic (TM) and in particular for Transverse Electric (TE) polarizations. For TE polarization it is found out that the metamaterial-coating permittivity has to be in the 0< εc < ε0 interval to achieve transparency, and in the - ε0 < εc <0 interval to achieve scattering maximization. However, unlike the "conjugate" pairing of DPS-DNG or ENG-MNG cases, when the transparency for metamaterial-coated PEC cylinders are considered, the analytically found relation between εc and the ratio of core-coating radii, γ, should be modified in a sense that scattering from the PEC core is canceled by the coating. Furthermore, replacing ε by μ (and vice versa) does not lead to the same conclusions for TM polarization unless the PEC cylinder is replaced by a perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) cylinder. On the other hand, scattering maximization can also be achieved in the TM polarization case when coating permeability μc <0, whereas transparency requires large | μc | for this polarization. Numerical results in the form of normalized monostatic and bistatic echo widths, which demonstrate the transparency and scattering maximization phenomena, are given and possible application areas are discussed. © 2007 The American Physical Society

    Investigation of metamaterial coated conducting cylinders for achieving transparency and maximizing radar cross section

    Recently, reducing the radar cross sections (RCS) of various structures to achieve transparency and obtaining resonant structures aimed at increasing the electromagnetic intensities, stored or radiated power levels have been investigated. The transparency and resonance (RCS maximization) conditions investigated in are mainly attributed to pairing of "conjugate" materials: materials which have opposite signs of constitutive parameters [e.g., double-positive (DPS) and double- negative (DNG) or epsilon-negative (ENG) and mu-negative (MNG)]. In the present work, we extend the transparency and resonance conditions for cylindrical structures when the core cylinder is particularly perfect electric conductor (PEC). The appropriate constitutive parameters of such metamaterials are investigated for both TE and TM polarizations. For TE polarization it is found out that, the metamaterial coating permittivity has to be in the 0 < epsivc < epsiv0 interval to achieve transparency, and in the -epsiv0 < epsivc < 0 interval to achieve RCS maximization. As in the case of "conjugate" pairing, transparency and resonance are found to be heavily dependent on the ratio of core-coating radii, instead of the total size of the cylindrical structure. However, unlike the "conjugate" pairing cases, replacing epsiv by mu (and vice versa) does not lead to the same conclusions for TM polarization unless the PEC cylinder is replaced by a perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) cylinder. Yet, RCS maximization can also be achieved in the TM polarization case when coating permeability muc < 0, whereas transparency requires large \muc\ for this polarization. Numerical results, which demonstrate the transparency and RCS maximization phenomena, are given in the form of normalized monostatic and bistatic echo widths

    Analytical modeling of spindle-tool dynamics on machine tools using Timoshenko beam model and receptance coupling for the prediction of tool point FRF

    Regenerative chatter is a well-known machining problem that results in unstable cutting process, poor surface quality and reduced material removal rate. This undesired self-excited vibration problem is one of the main obstacles in utilizing the total capacity of a machine tool in production. In order to obtain a chatter-free process on a machining center, stability diagrams can be used. Numerically or analytically, constructing the stability lobe diagram for a certain spindle-holder-tool combination implies knowing the system dynamics at the tool tip; i.e., the point frequency response function (FRF) that relates the dynamic displacement and force at that point. This study presents an analytical method that uses Timoshenko beam theory for calculating the tool point FRF of a given combination by using the receptance coupling and structural modification methods. The objective of the study is two fold. Firstly, it is aimed to develop a reliable mathematical model to predict tool point FRF in a machining center so that chatter stability analysis can be done, and secondly to make use of this model in studying the effects of individual bearing and contact parameters on tool point FRF so that better approaches can be found in predicting contact parameters from experimental measurements. The model can also be used to study the effects of several spindle, holder and tool parameters on chatter stability. In this paper, the mathematical model, as well as the details of obtaining the system component (spindle, holder and tool) dynamics and coupling them to obtain the tool point FRF are given. The model suggested is verified by comparing the natural frequencies of an example spindle-holder-tool assembly obtained from the model with those obtained from a finite element software

    Deconstructing the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender victim of sex trafficking: Harm, exceptionality and religion–sexuality tensions

    Contrary to widespread belief, sex trafficking also targets lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) communities. Contemporary social and political constructions of victimhood lie at the heart of regulatory policies on sex trafficking. Led by the US Department of State, knowledge about LGBT victims of trafficking constitutes the newest frontier in the expansion of criminalization measures. These measures represent a crucial shift. From a burgeoning range of preemptive measures enacted to protect an amorphous class of ‘all potential victims’, now policies are heavily premised on the risk posed by traffickers to ‘victims of special interest’. These constructed identities, however, are at odds with established structures. Drawing on a range of literatures, the core task of this article is to confront some of the complexities and tensions surrounding constructions of LGBT trafficking victims. Specifically, the article argues that discourses of ‘exceptional vulnerability’ and the polarized notions of ‘innocence’ and ‘guilt’ inform hierarchies of victimhood. Based on these insights, the article argues for the need to move beyond monolithic understandings of victims, by reframing the politics of harm accordingly

    The role of the family in attributing meaning to living with HIV and its stigma in Turkey

    Stigma attached to HIV/AIDS remains a global problem, with severe negative consequences for people living with HIV (PLHIV). Family support is fundamental for PLHIV’s psychological and physical well-being. HIV-related stigma is high in Turkey, where HIV/AIDS prevalence is low and the epidemic is not considered a priority. Based on qualitative data generated with HIV-positive women and men, this article explores the process of stigmatization, as experienced and perceived by PLHIV in Turkey, focusing on the institution of the family. Results indicated that enacted stigma from family members is lower than anticipated. While most participants’ narratives showed patterns of support rather than rejection from families, the strong expectations around the cultural value attributed to “the family” are found to be the main facilitators of internalized stigma. The article critically discusses the meaning and implications of family support, addressing the role of patriarchal values attributed to womanhood, manhood, and sexuality in Turkey

    The Power Laws of Violence against Women: Rescaling Research and Policies

    BACKGROUND: Violence against Women -despite its perpetuation over centuries and its omnipresence at all social levels- entered into social consciousness and the general agenda of Social Sciences only recently, mainly thanks to feminist research, campaigns, and general social awareness. The present article analyzes in a secondary analysis of German prevalence data on Violence against Women, whether the frequency and severity of Violence against Women can be described with power laws. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Although the investigated distributions all resemble power-law distributions, a rigorous statistical analysis accepts this hypothesis at a significance level of 0.1 only for 1 of 5 cases of the tested frequency distributions and with some restrictions for the severity of physical violence. Lowering the significance level to 0.01 leads to the acceptance of the power-law hypothesis in 2 of the 5 tested frequency distributions and as well for the severity of domestic violence. The rejections might be mainly due to the noise in the data, with biases caused by self-reporting, errors through rounding, desirability response bias, and selection bias. CONCLUSION: Future victimological surveys should be designed explicitly to avoid these deficiencies in the data to be able to clearly answer the question whether Violence against Women follows a power-law pattern. This finding would not only have statistical implications for the processing and presentation of the data, but also groundbreaking consequences on the general understanding of Violence against Women and policy modeling, as the skewed nature of the underlying distributions makes evident that Violence against Women is a highly disparate and unequal social problem. This opens new questions for interdisciplinary research, regarding the interplay between environmental, experimental, and social factors on victimization
