The rehearsal and staging of work that was created outside a discrete culture can present significant challenges, including within an educational context. This article highlights and unpicks the range of challenges that can face a director of stage plays written by Sir Alan Ayckbourn, when the work is planned, rehearsed and staged within a non-British context. The piece concludes with short exercises to help guide the director of work by Ayckbour

    Deconstructive Play: Empathy, Distance, Diversity

    Get PDF
This workshop investigates the power of play between cultures, generations and disciplines, promoting empathy, compassion and positivity in human relations. Groups will work together to deconstruct games and other source materials to invent new ways of playing. Deconstructive approaches from literature, art, theatre and architecture are employed to give insight and generate ideas for cultural and generational interaction. The workshop connects to a project by ACTIVISMO PSD, the Parliament of Social Design, investigating Deconstructive, intergenerational play in Middlesbrough, UK. This session will involve the making of short narrative works (written, performed, produced, built, installed) or proposals for new games to be played. Participation will lead to increased ability to work collectively across cultures and generations. We will work in a studio space with tables, chairs, paper, computer, projector, internet connection and our own devices. We will set up a Video Booth to record descriptions of games to be shared with international partners of the project. What do we mean by Deconstructive Play? Looking at “games” we (or our parents and grandparents) used to play, taking them apart then inventing something else. We will deconstruct games from Asia and Europe by connecting with a group in Japan. We will consider theatre, performance and role play in several cultures. We will learn to translate, interpret and deliberately misinterpret. We will consider learning and unlearning as key attributes in education and look at how we can apply deconstructive principles to the workplace and social spaces. We will work in groups and connect with people from different backgrounds. We will find out if we can play in a foreign language, interpret and misinterpret instructions and rules

Floral biology, reproductive system and floral visitors of Vitex cymosa (Lamiaceae)

    Get PDF
Vitex cymosa Bert. ex Spreng. (Lamiaceae) is a native species of tropical and subtropical Central and South America. Its medicinal, antioxidant, antifungal and antibacterial properties are noteworthy and widely studied. This study aims to contribute towards the knowledge of the reproductive biology of V. cymosa, through: the determination of the reproductive system; the description of reproductive morphological attributes (flower, fruit, pollen and nectary), attractants and floral phases, as well as the record and function of floral visitors. Vitex cymosa presents melitophilic floral traits: diurnal anthesis, bluish coloration, bilabiate structural type, presence of visual guides in the corolla indicating the location of the reward (nectar), and a soft, sweet and pleasant aroma to humans. The pollen has pollenkit and is deposited nototribically on the pollinators. The nectary is of gynoecial origin, the nectar is released through nectarostomes located on the apex of the ovary, remaining available even after corolla abscition, as a post-floral nectary; such zone is distinguished by a purple coloration, different from that of the rest of this organ, which grows basipetally as the fruit develops. The reproductive system of V. cymosa is mixed, resulting in more than 75% of fructification, through both allogamy mediated by pollinators and spontaneous self-pollination, presenting a slight hercogamy that would contribute to cross-pollination. Eleven species of floral visitors were recorded, all belonging to the Class Insecta. Among these floral visitors, Apis mellifera was the most frequent species, and along with other species of native bees (of the genera Bombus, Centris, Plebeia, Tetragonisca, Trigona), wasps and butterflies, they would be pollinators when they visit legitimately (in the case of the hymenopterans, as some of them thieve pollen). Despite this visitor assembly, the most important pollinators are the bees, which coincides with the melitophilic characteristics of the flowers. The nectar exposed in flowers where the corolla has already fallen, more accessible to some bees and to the wasps, would contribute to greater attraction to pollinators, as well as predatory insects of herbivores of the developing fruits.Fil: De Egea Elsam, Juana.

    Get PDF
A description of the forest of Schinopsis balansae is presented, including an analysis of its structure, composition and floristic variability. The sampling site was located within the forest-palm savanna mosaic in the humid Chaco. Quantitative data was determined in order to calculate the Importance Value Index that included the abundance, frequency and dominance of the species. The Diversity Index was also calculated and compared with that of other forests in the region. Results indicate that this forest is a Fabaceae-Anacardiaceae-Arecaceae complex with very characteristic edapho-botanic associations, and that it floristically constitutes a mixed and transitional forest with other plant formations of South America.
