    Reflections on multicultural artists\u27 employment and career prospects

    This paper analyses multicultural artists\u27 perceptions of their employment and career prospects in the arts. We do this first by reviewing the relatively small body of literature on multicultural artists\u27 careers and supplement that with a literature review of general vocational development literature. Further, we examine the degree to which multicultural artists possess the generic employability skills necessary to gain and retain employment in Australia. We use data from a small-scale qualitative study, conducted in Western Australia, which identified artists\u27 perceptions of barriers to participation in the arts in general and to paid employment in particular. From the literature and studied data, we propose a \u27Dual Responsibilities Framework for Career Management of Multicultural Artists\u27.<br /

    Fragments of the earliest land plants

    The earliest fossil evidence for land plants comes from microscopic dispersed spores. These microfossils are abundant and widely distributed in sediments, and the earliest generally accepted reports are from rocks of mid-Ordovician age (Llanvirn, 475 million years ago). Although distribution, morphology and ultrastructure of the spores indicate that they are derived from terrestrial plants, possibly early relatives of the bryophytes, this interpretation remains controversial as there is little in the way of direct evidence for the parent plants. An additional complicating factor is that there is a significant hiatus between the appearance of the first dispersed spores and fossils of relatively complete land plants (megafossils): spores predate the earliest megafossils (Late Silurian, 425 million year ago) by some 50 million years. Here we report the description of spore-containing plant fragments from Ordovician rocks of Oman. These fossils provide direct evidence for the nature of the spore-producing plants. They confirm that the earliest spores developed in large numbers within sporangia, providing strong evidence that they are the fossilized remains of bona fide land plants.     Why has the rising economic tide failed to float the disability employment boat? A call to action : business,community, government and people power

    It is well established that people with disabilities are under-represented in the workforce. Disability labour market scholars agree that there is a significant gap between labour market participation of people with disabilities and people without disabilities, with on-going labour market disadvantage widely reported. All indicate that notwithstanding the recent economic growth of Western economies, the employment rate for people with disabilities has not improved. This paper draws on the findings of three recent research projects on disability employment in Australia and on data from contemporary literature on workplace discrimination and proposes that a combination of more robust social inclusion policies and legislation, revitalised supported employment models, intensive social marketing, and radical disability advocacy is required.<br /

    Talking about Hillsborough: ‘panic’ as discourse in survivors' accounts of the 1989 football stadium disaster

    Popular representations of crowd behaviour in disasters are often characterised by irrationalist discourses, in particular ‘mass panic’ despite their rejection by current scientific research. This paper reports an analysis of four survivors' accounts of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster to investigate if and how they used the term ‘panic’. Reference to ‘panic’ occurred frequently, but more detailed analysis found that their accounts did not match the classic criteria for ‘mass panic’ (e.g. uncontrolled emotion and selfish behaviour). Indeed, participants referred to ‘orderly’ behaviour, and cooperation, even when they said the threat of death was present. ‘Panic’ was therefore being used as a description of events that was not consistent. A discourse analysis of usage suggests that participants used ‘panic’ not only to convey feelings of fear and distress but also to apportion culpability towards the actions of the police who they considered responsible for the tragedy (as indeed recent independent research has confirmed). It is concluded that the term ‘panic’ is so deeply embedded in popular discourse that people may use it even when they have reason to reject its irrationalist implications.     Facet recovery and light emission from GaN/InGaN/GaN core-shell structures grown by metal organic vapour phase epitaxy on etched GaN nanorod arrays

    The use of etched nanorods from a planar template as a growth scaffold for a highly regular GaN/InGaN/GaN core-shell structure is demonstrated. The recovery of m-plane non-polar facets from etched high-aspect-ratio GaN nanorods is studied with and without the introduction of a hydrogen silsesquioxane passivation layer at the bottom of the etched nanorod arrays. This layer successfully prevented c-plane growth between the nanorods, resulting in vertical nanorod sidewalls (∼89.8°) and a more regular height distribution than re-growth on unpassivated nanorods. The height variation on passivated nanorods is solely determined by the uniformity of nanorod diameter, which degrades with increased growth duration. Facet-dependent indium incorporation of GaN/InGaN/GaN core-shell layers regrown onto the etched nanorods is observed by high-resolution cathodoluminescence imaging. Sharp features corresponding to diffracted wave-guide modes in angle-resolved photoluminescence measurements are evidence of the uniformity of the full core-shell structure grown on ordered etched nanorods

    Modeling anisotropic diffusion using a departure from isotropy approach

    There are a large number of finite volume solvers available for solution of isotropic diffusion equation. This article presents an approach of adapting these solvers to solve anisotropic diffusion equations. The formulation works by decomposing the diffusive flux into a component associated with isotropic diffusion and another component associated with departure from isotropic diffusion. This results in an isotropic diffusion equation with additional terms to account for the anisotropic effect. These additional terms are treated using a deferred correction approach and coupled via an iterative procedure. The presented approach is validated against various diffusion problems in anisotropic media with known analytical or numerical solutions. Although demonstrated for two-dimensional problems, extension of the present approach to three-dimensional problems is straight forward. Other than the finite volume method, this approach can be applied to any discretization method
