    In2CoP 2020 - International Conference on Co-Creation Processes in Higher Education 2020: book of abstracts

    A Cocriação e a Inovação no Ensino Superior representam um dos principais compromissos do Instituto Politécnico de Bragança (IPB), cuja atividade formativa e de investigação se orienta, de forma sinérgica, para a cooperação com as empresas e instituições da região. O IPB pretende contribuir, de forma ativa, para uma economia regional baseada no conhecimento e com uma forte articulação internacional. Nesta esteira, teve lugar, na cidade de Bragança, nos dias 29 a 30 de janeiro de 2020, a Conferência Internacional em Processos de Cocriação no Ensino Superior (In2CoP). Privilegiamos um espaço de reflexão de processos e de partilha de resultados de ecossistemas de cocriação, visando o desenvolvimento de uma comunidade de aprendizagem integradora, interdisciplinar e multicultural. Ao longo dos três dias da conferência, mais de 150 conferencistas, nacionais e estrangeiros, participaram, ativamente, nas diversas atividades propostas: uma sessão plenária com seis intervenções, quatro workshops e uma sessão pitch com a apresentação de trinta e seis projetos de inovação e cocriação. Com um espírito inovador, as atividades decorreram no campus do IPB e em espaços emblemáticos da cidade de Bragança, designadamente: Centro de Arte Contemporânea Graças Morais, Centro de Fotografia Georges Dussaud e Centro de Ciência Viva. Foi ainda realizada uma visita social ao Museu do Côa em Vila Nova de Foz Côa.Co-creation and Innovation in Higher Education represents one of the main commitments of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB), whose training and research activity is synergistically oriented towards cooperation with companies and institutions in the region. The IPB intends to contribute actively to a regional economy based on knowledge and with a strong international articulation. In this context, the International Conference on Co-Creation Processes in Higher Education (In2CoP) took place in the city of Bragança, on January 29-30, 2020. We privilege a space for reflection of processes and sharing of results from co-creation ecosystems, aiming at the development of an integrative, interdisciplinary, and multicultural learning community. Over the three days of the conference, more than 150 national and foreign conferencists actively participated in the various activities proposed: a plenary session with six interventions, four workshops, and a pitch session with the presentation of thirty-six innovation and co-creation projects. With an innovative spirit, the activities took place in IPB's campus and in emblematic spaces in the city of Bragança, namely: Centro de Arte Contemporânea Graças Morais, Centro de Fotografia Georges Dussaud and Centro de Ciência Viva.     Load Index Metrics for an Optimized Management of Web Services: A Systematic Evaluation

    The lack of precision to predict service performance through load indices may lead to wrong decisions regarding the use of web services, compromising service performance and raising platform cost unnecessarily. This paper presents experimental studies to qualify the behaviour of load indices in the web service context. The experiments consider three services that generate controlled and significant server demands, four levels of workload for each service and six distinct execution scenarios. The evaluation considers three relevant perspectives: the capability for representing recent workloads, the capability for predicting near-future performance and finally stability. Eight different load indices were analysed, including the JMX Average Time index (proposed in this paper) specifically designed to address the limitations of the other indices. A systematic approach is applied to evaluate the different load indices, considering a multiple linear regression model based on the stepwise-AIC method. The results show that the load indices studied represent the workload to some extent; however, in contrast to expectations, most of them do not exhibit a coherent correlation with service performance and this can result in stability problems. The JMX Average Time index is an exception, showing a stable behaviour which is tightly-coupled to the service runtime for all executions. Load indices are used to predict the service runtime and therefore their inappropriate use can lead to decisions that will impact negatively on both service performance and execution cost

    Coastal upwelling and downwelling forcing of circulation in a semi-enclosed bay: Ria de Vigo

    Semi-enclosed bays in upwelling regions are exposed to forcing related to winds, currents and buoyancy over the shelf. The influence of this external forcing is moderated by factors such as connectivity to the open ocean, shelter by surrounding topography, dimensions of the bay, and freshwater outflows. Such bays, preferred locations for ports, mariculture, marine industry, recreational activities and coastal settlement, present a range of characteristics, understanding of which is necessary to their rational management. Observations in such a semi-enclosed bay, the Ria de Vigo in Spain, are used to characterize the influence of upwelling and downwelling pulses on its circulation. In this location, near the northern limit of the Iberian upwelling system, upwelling events dominate during a short summer season and downwelling events the rest of the year. The ria response to the external forcing is central to nutrient supply and resultant plankton productivity that supports its high level of cultured mussel production. Intensive field studies in September 2006 and June 2007 captured a downwelling event and an upwelling event, respectively. Data from eight current profiler moorings and boat-based MiniBat/ADCP surveys provided an unprecedented quasi-synoptic view of the distribution of water masses and circulation patterns in any ria. In the outer ria, circulation was dominated by the introduction of wind-driven alongshore flow from the external continental shelf through the ria entrances and its interaction with the topography. In the middle ria, circulation was primarily related to the upwelling/downwelling cycle, with a cool, salty and dense lower layer penetrating to the inner ria during upwelling over the shelf. A warmer, lower salinity and less dense surface layer of coastal waters flowed inward during downwelling. Without external forcing, the inner ria responded primarily to tides and buoyancy changes related to land runoff. Under both upwelling and downwelling conditions, the flushing of the ria involved shelf responses to wind pulses. Their persistence for a few days was sufficient to allow waters from the continental shelf to penetrate the innermost ria. Longer term observations supported by numerical modeling are required to confirm the generality of such flushing events in the ria and determine their typical frequency, while comparative studies should explore how these scenarios fit into the range of conditions experienced in other semi-enclosed bays

    New edible coatings composed of galactomannans and collagen blends to improve the postharvest quality of fruits: influence on fruits gas transfer rate

    The objective of this work was to produce new edible coatings, based on a mixture of galactomannans from novel sources (seeds of Adenanthera pavonina and Caesalpinia pulcherrima), collagen and glycerol, and to determine their influence in gas transfer rates when they are applied on mangoes and apples. The first part of the work consisted in obtaining coating solutions with the convenient values of wettability for each fruit; such coating solutions were then characterized in terms of their permeability (to CO2, O2 and water vapour), mechanical properties, colour and opacity. Gas transfer rates from mangoes coated with a solution of A. pavonina galactomannan (0.5%), collagen (1.5%) and glycerol (1.5%) were compared with those of mangoes without coating: 28% less O2 consumption and 11% less CO2 production were observed in coated mangoes. The same procedure was performed in apples (in this case using C. pulcherrima galactomannan (0.5%), collagen (1.5%) and no glycerol); the CO2 production and the O2 consumption was approximately 50% lower in apples with coating than in apples without coating. The results suggest that these coatings can reduce gas transfer rates in these fruits, and can be therefore important tools to extend their shelf life.The author A.M.     Jerrymouse: A Tool for a Flexible and Dynamic Distribution of Web Service Requests

    This paper presents a novel architecture for distributing web service requests on clusters of servers. The architecture facilitates a transparent dynamic distribution of requests according to a range of specified policies. This enables a flexible performance in respect of different objectives, services and platforms (typically based on server workload). The architecture has been successfully demonstrated with a prototype implementation (called “Jerrymouse”). Our preliminary results with Jerrymouse indicate stable behaviour and worthwhile performance gains (compared with Apache HTTP Server). A specific policy to deliver reduced cluster electricity savings has also been successfully implemented

    Mecanismos endócrinos e moleculares envolvidos na formação do corpo lúteo e na luteólise: revisão de literatura

    The corpus luteum (CL) is a transitory endocrinal structure formed by steroidogenic small luteal cells (SLC) and large luteal cells (LLC) that associated with fibroblast and a wide web of capillaries form a structure specialized in synthesis of progesterone (P4). In general, for the synthesis of P4 in the steroidogenic luteal cells, cholesterol joints specific receptors on the cellular membrane and is transported to the cytosol. Later, cholesterol goes to an internal mitochondrial membrane and by the action of the enzyme P450scc is transformed into pregnenolone. In the smooth endoplasmic reticulum pregnenolone is converted to P4 by the enzyme 3²-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3²-HSD). The steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR), the peripheral benzodiazepine receptor (PBR) and endozepine participate in the transport of cholesterol to the different mitochondrial compartments. Therefore, it is supposed that the capacity of synthesis of P4 in the CL is related to the cellular concentration of receptors that catch cholesterol, to the enzymes P450scc and 3²-HSD and to the cholesterol cellular transport proteins. In bovine, the LLC are responsible for more than 80% of P4 production in the CL. The lowest concentration of cholesterol transport proteins in the mitochondria seems to limit the synthesis of P4 in the SLC. P4 supports a proper uterine environment for the development of conceptuses, depending on the specie. In most species, the lack of fertilization or the conceptus incapacity to signalize its presence in the uterus establishes luteolysis. This physiological event is characterized by the functional and structural regression of the CL. For the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy it is necessary to block luteolysis through different mechanisms among species. In primates and equids it occurs by the secretion of specific gonadotropins and in ruminants by antiluteolytic factors. This review has the objective to characterize the endocrine and molecular mechanisms involved in the formation of the corpus luteum and luteolysis.O corpo lúteo (CL) é uma estrutura endócrina transitória formada por células luteais esteroidogênicas pequenas (SLC) e grandes (LLC), que associadas aos fibroblastos e a uma ampla rede de capilares constituem uma estrutura especializada na síntese de progesterona (P4). De maneira geral, para a síntese de P4 nas células luteais esteroidogênicas, o colesterol se liga a receptores específicos na membrana celular e é transportado ao citosol. Posteriormente, o colesterol dirige-se a membrana mitocondrial interna e por ação da enzima P450scc transforma-se em pregnenolona. No retículo endoplasmático liso a pregnenolona é convertida a P4 pela enzima 3²-hidroxiesteróide deidrogenase (3²-HSD). A proteína de regulação aguda da esteroidogênese (StAR), o receptor benzodiazepínico tipo periférico (PBR) e a endozepina participam no transporte do colesterol para os diferentes compartimentos mitocondriais. Assim, supõe-se que a capacidade de síntese de P4 no CL esteja relacionada à concentração celular de receptores que captam o colesterol, às enzimas P450scc e 3²-HSD, e às proteínas celulares transportadoras de colesterol. Na espécie bovina, as LLC são responsáveis por mais de 80% da produção deste hormônio no CL. A menor concentração de proteínas transportadoras de colesterol na mitocôndria parecem limitar a síntese de P4 nas SLC. A P4 favorece um meio ambiente uterino apropriado para o desenvolvimento do(s) concepto(s), dependendo da espécie. Na maioria das espécies, a ausência da fertilização ou a incapacidade do concepto em sinalizar sua existência no útero estabelecem a luteólise. Tal evento fisiológico caracteriza-se pela regressão funcional e estrutural do(s) corpo(s) lúteo(s). Para o estabelecimento e a manutenção da prenhez torna-se necessário o bloqueio da luteólise por mecanismos que diferem entre as espécies. Em primatas e equídeos esse reconhecimento ocorre pela secreção de gonadotrofinas específicas e em ruminantes pela presença de fatores anti-luteolíticos.     O processo de ocupação em ambiente de várzea urbana de uma pequena cidade do estuário amazônico: Ponta de Pedras-PA

    In Amazonian cities it is observed that rural riberinhos move to urban centers looking for a better quality of life for their families. Part of this population chooses to live in the urban floodplains, which are the preferred areas of occupation of them. As a result, urban growth towards the floodplains has transformed the landscapes of this environment. Urban occupation is transforming the urban floodplain landscape in the neighborhood of Carnapijó, located in the small city of Ponta de Pedras, Pará. In this sense, the aim of this article is to explain why riberinhos choose to build their houses on the floodplain instead of choosing to live on upland. This research was based on fieldwork, carried out in 2014, with application of questionnaires to more than 10% of households located in floodplain areas of the studied area. It was observed that, for riberinhos, in certain places, the landscape is not pleasant to observe, due to the precarious infrastructure, lack of maintenance and public cleaning. In the residents' perception, the landscape is more related to the local vegetation, and these elements mischaracterize the local landscape.Nas cidades amazônicas observa-se que os moradores ribeirinhos rurais se mudam para os centros urbanos, buscando melhor qualidade de vida para a família. Parte dessa população opta por morar nas várzeas urbanas, que são áreas preferenciais de ocupação dessa população. Como resultado, o crescimento urbano, em direção às várzeas, tem transformado as paisagens desse ambiente. No Bairro Carnapijó, localizado na pequena cidade de Ponta de Pedras, Pará, a ocupação urbana está transformando a paisagem da várzea urbana. Nesse sentido, o objetivo desse artigo é trazer uma explicação sobre o porquê de os moradores ribeirinhos optarem por construir suas casas sobre as águas ao invés de escolherem morar em terra firme. Esta pesquisa fundamentou-se em trabalhos de campo, desenvolvidos no ano de 2014, com aplicação de formulários a mais de 10% dos domicílios localizados em áreas de várzea do bairro estudado. Observou-se que, para os moradores ribeirinhos, em determinados locais, a paisagem não é agradável de se observar, em função da infraestrutura precária, ausência de manutenção e limpeza pública. Na percepção dos moradores, a paisagem está mais relacionada com a vegetação local, e esses elementos descaracterizam a paisagem local
