5D seesaw, flavor structure, and mass textures
In the 5D theory in which only 3 generation right-handed neutrinos are in the
bulk, the neutrino flavor mixings and the mass spectrum can be constructed
through the seesaw mechanism. The 5D seesaw is easily calculated just by a
replacement of the
Majorana mass eigenvalues, M_i, by 2 M_*tan(h)[\pi RM_i] (M_*: 5D Planck
scale,
R: compactification radius). The 5D features appear when the bulk mass, which
induces the 4D Majorana mass, is the same as the compactification scale or
larger than it. Depending on the type of bulk mass, the seesaw scales of the 3
generations are strongly split (the tan-function case) or degenerate (the
tanh-function case). In the split case, the seesaw enhancement is naturally
realized. The single right-handed neutrino dominance works in a simple setup,
and some specific mass textures, which are just assumptions in the 4D setup,
can be naturally obtained in
5 dimensions. The degenerate case is also useful for a suitable neutrino

Current correlations and quantum localization in 2D disordered systems with broken time-reversal invariance
We study long-range correlations of equilibrium current densities in a
two-dimensional mesoscopic system with the time reversal invariance broken by a
random or homogeneous magnetic field. Our result is universal, i.e. it does not
depend on the type (random potential or random magnetic field) or correlation
length of disorder. This contradicts recent sigma-model calculations of
Taras-Semchuk and Efetov (TS&E) for the current correlation function, as well
as for the renormalization of the conductivity. We show explicitly that the new
term in the sigma-model derived by TS&E and claimed to lead to delocalization
does not exist. The error in the derivation of TS&E is traced to an incorrect
ultraviolet regularization procedure violating current conservation and gauge

Can Barrier to Relative Sliding of Carbon Nanotube Walls Be Measured?
Interwall interaction energies, as well as barriers to relative sliding of
the walls along the nanotube axis, are first calculated for pairs of both
armchair or both zigzag adjacent walls of carbon nanotubes with a wide range of
radiuses. It is found that for the pairs with the radius of the outer wall
greater than 5 nm both the interwall interaction energy and barriers to the
relative sliding per one atom of the outer wall only slightly depends on the
wall radius. A wide set of the measurable physical quantities determined by
these barriers are estimated as a function of the wall radius: shear strengths
and diffusion coefficients for relative sliding of the walls along the axis, as
well as frequencies of relative axial oscillations of the walls. For
nonreversible telescopic extension of the walls, maximum overlap of the walls
for which threshold static friction forces are greater than capillary forces is
estimated. Possibility of experimental verification of the calculated barriers
by measurements of the estimated physical quantities is discussed.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure
Supersymmetric Intersections of M-branes and pp-waves
We study supersymmetric intersections of M2 and M5 branes with different
pp-waves of M-theory. We consider first M-brane probes in the background of
pp-waves and determine under which conditions the embedding is supersymmetric.
We particularize our formalism to the case of pp-waves with 32, 24 and 20
supersymmetries. We also construct supergravity solutions for the brane-wave
system. Generically these solutions are delocalised along some directions
transverse to the brane and preserve the same number of supersymmetries as in

INSIG1 influences obesity-related hypertriglyceridemia in humans
In our analysis of a quantitative trait locus (QTL) for plasma triglyceride (TG) levels [logarithm of odds (LOD) = 3.7] on human chromosome 7q36, we examined 29 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across INSIG1, a biological candidate gene in the region. Insulin-induced genes (INSIGs) are feedback mediators of cholesterol and fatty acid synthesis in animals, but their role in human lipid regulation is unclear. In our cohort, the INSIG1 promoter SNP rs2721 was associated with TG levels (P = 2 × 10−3 in 1,560 individuals of the original linkage cohort, P = 8 × 10−4 in 920 unrelated individuals of the replication cohort, combined P = 9.9 × 10−6). Individuals homozygous for the T allele had 9% higher TG levels and 2-fold lower expression of INSIG1 in surgical liver biopsy samples when compared with individuals homozygous for the G allele. Also, the T allele showed additional binding of nuclear proteins from HepG2 liver cells in gel shift assays. Finally, the variant rs7566605 in INSIG2, the only homolog of INSIG1, enhances the effect of rs2721 (P = 0.00117). The variant rs2721 alone explains 5.4% of the observed linkage in our cohort, suggesting that additional, yet-undiscovered genes and sequence variants in the QTL interval also contribute to alterations in TG levels in humans
Antecedents and outcomes of consumer environmentally friendly attitudes and behaviour
With the intensification of problems relating to the environment, a growing number of consumers are becoming more ecologically conscious in their preferences and purchases of goods. This paper presents the results of a study conducted among 500 Cypriot consumers, focusing on the factors that shape consumer environmental attitudes and behaviour, as well as on the resulting outcomes. The findings confirmed that both the inward and outward environmental attitudes of a consumer are positively influenced by his/her degree of collectivism, long-term orientation, political involvement, deontology, and law obedience, but have no connection with liberalism. The adoption of an inward environmental attitude was also found to be conducive to green purchasing behaviour that ultimately leads to high product satisfaction. On the other hand, an outward environmental attitude facilitates the adoption of a general environmental behaviour, which is responsible for greater satisfaction with life. The findings of the study have important implications for shaping effective company offerings to consumers in target markets, as well as formulating appropriate policies at the governmental level to enhance environmental sensitivity among citizens
