A total of 115 stage calculations were used to define the fluid damping coefficient, delta sub fluid. Results indicate that the average total damping coefficient per stage needed for stability is delta sub total 1.85

    A method in which a quartz tube is charged with chunks of metallurgical grade silicon and/or a mixture of such chunks and high purity quartz sand, and impurities from a class including aluminum, boron, as well as certain transition metals including nickel, iron, and manganese is described. The tube is then evacuated and heated to a temperature within a range of 800 C to 1400 C. A stream of gas comprising a reactant, such as silicon tetrafluoride, is continuously delivered at low pressures through the charge for causing a metathetical reaction of impurities of the silicon and the reactant to occur for forming a volatile halide and leaving a residue of silicon of an improved purity.     The research during this period continued to expand the class of numerical algorithms that can be accurately and efficiently implemented on overlapping grids. Whereas previous calculations have been used to solve elliptic equations and to find the steady-state solution of parabolic equations, the present work is aimed towards developing time-accurate solution techniques for parabolic and hyperbolic equations. The primary difficulty here is in the correct treatment of the interior boundary nodes that must be updated at each iteration. The implementation of explicit methods is straightforward. However, the common practice of lagging these values when using an implicit methods leads to inconsistencies in the difference equation. One way to avoid this problem is to alternately calculate with an implicit and an explicit method on each subgrid. With this procedure, the explicit method generates boundary values at the next time level which are then used by the implicit step. It can be shown that when a backward implicit method is combined with a forward explicit method, the composite method is second order accurate and unconditionally stable for linear problems. A second area in which progress can be reported is in the distribution of grid points on curves and surfaces

    Results are presented from an investigation to determine the effects of fabrication-induced defects on the performance of an ablative heat shield material in a simulated space shuttle reentry environment. Nondestructive methods for detecting the defects were investigated. The material considered is a fiber-filled, honeycomb-reinforced, low-density elastomer. Results were obtained for density variations, voids, fiber bundles, crushed honeycomb, undercut honeycomb, unbonded areas, face sheet delaminations, and cure variations. The data indicate that, within reasonable tolerances, the fabrication defects investigated are not critical in terms of reentry performance of the heat shield

    Construction and Software Design for a Microcomputer Controlled pH/Ion Titrator

    The construction of an automated titration device is described. The major components include an Apple II+ Microcomputer and 8-bit parallel interface. Fisher Accumet, Model 520 Digital pH/lon Meter, Gilmont Micrometer Buret of 2.5 mL capacity, Sigma stepper motor, power supply and driver to operate the buret, and a constant temperature bath of ± 0.005 °C stability. The limitations of the system are 0.001 pH/0.1 mv for the pH/ion sensing system, and 0.125 μL per step for the buret. The system as described is designed to determine equilibrium constants for metal ion-amino acid complexes. By changing the software a variety of different pH and redox titration experiments may be performed. A computer program used to operate the stepper motor driven syringe buret and record the pH from a digital pH meter is described. The program uses both Apple BASIC and assembly language. This is a closed loop operation in which the data from the pH meter is used to control the amount of reagent delivered by the buret. The results are displayed graphically as the titration proceeds. The variance of the pH readings are calculated using an assembly language subroutine and the calculations are done with zero round-off error
