Small Molecule Disruption of ROS-Regulating Pathways in Human Carcinoma

    Get PDF
Gold (I) coordinated N-heterocyclic carbenes containing appended redox cycling moieties were designed and analyzed for their ability to target the antioxidant network via multiple mechanisms in various human cancer cell models. Complexes containing either ferrocene or naphthoquinone redox cycling moieties were screened for inhibition of cell growth, inhibition of thioredoxin reductase (TrxR), and accentuation of exogenous ROS. The cell death pathway employed was determined by flow cytometry via detection of Annexin-V FITC. Furthermore, differential gene expression between treated cells and untreated cells revealed the induction of endoplasmic reticulum stress and unfolded protein response pathways

The DMCA and Researchers' First Amendment Rights

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or DMCA, was enacted by Congress in October of 1998.1 Section 1201(a)(1) of the Act, known as the "anti-circumvention" provision, states that "[n]o person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a [digital] work protected under this title.".2 Sections 1201(a)(2) and 1201(b) combine to form the "anti-trafficking" provisions, which provide that no one shall distribute technology that can accomplish this circumvention.3 Congress constructed a two-year delay in implementation of these provisions, thus, on October 28, 2000, circumvention of effective technological controls became punishable by both civil and criminal actions.4 Unfortunately, the presence of these provisions, along with courts refusal to recognize traditional copyright privileges and defenses in this area of "paracopyright,"5 chills programmers' speech

    Spring-Block Models of Earthquake Dynamics

    Get PDF
In this paper, the dynamics of spring-block models are studied. A brief overview of the history of spring-block models relating to earthquakes is presented, along with the development of friction laws. Several mathematical topics relating to dynamical systems are also discussed. We consider two spring-block models; one with Dieterich-Ruina rate and state dependent friction and another with a modified Dieterich-Ruina style friction. For each system, the qualitative behavior and numerical solutions are presented. In the first case, we find that the system undergoes a Hopf bifurcation from a stationary solution to a periodic orbit, and eventually transitions to chaos. In the latter case, we find that a stationary solution exists along with the conditions for a Hopf bifurcation to occur. We develop the mathematical framework to compute periodic and chaotic behavior for the system. Future work will be to develop more efficient algorithms to perform the actual computations

The impact of study support : a report of a longitudinal study into the impact of participation in out-of-school-hours learning on the academic attainment, attitudes and school attendance of secondary school students

    Get PDF
Study support makes a difference. It has an impact on three key aspects of students’ school careers: • attainment at GCSE and KS3 SATs; • attitudes to school; • attendance at school. These findings were consistent for all groups of students in all schools in the study. - Study support can help to improve schools and can influence the attitudes to learning of teachers and parents as well as students
