The Gauge Hierarchy Problem and Higher Dimensional Gauge Theories
We report on an attempt to solve the gauge hierarchy problem in the framework
of higher dimensional gauge theories. Both classical Higgs mass and
quadratically divergent quantum correction to the mass are argued to vanish.
Hence the hierarchy problem in its original sense is solved. The remaining
finite mass correction is shown to depend crucially on the choice of boundary
condition for matter fields, and a way to fix it dynamically is presented. We
also point out that on the simply-connected space even the finite mass
correction vanishes.Comment: LaTeX2e. 12 pages, 3 Postscript figures; Added references, some

Widely separated binary systems of very low mass stars
In this paper we review some recent detections of wide binary brown dwarf
systems and discuss them in the context of the multiplicity properties of very
low-mass stars and brown dwarfs.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure (new version with minor corrections); to appear in

Discovery of Radio Emission from the Tight M8 Binary: LP 349-25
We present radio observations of 8 ultracool dwarfs with a narrow spectral
type range (M8-M9.5) using the Very Large Array at 8.5 GHz. Only the tight M8
binary LP 349-25 was detected. LP 349-25 is the tenth ultracool dwarf system
detected in radio and its trigonometric parallax pi = 67.6 mas, recently
measured by Gatewood et al., makes it the furthest ultracool system detected by
the Very Large Array to date, and the most radio-luminous outside of obvious
flaring activity or variability. With a separation of only 1.8 AU, masses of
the components of LP 349-25 can be measured precisely without any theoretical
assumptions (Forveille et al.), allowing us to clarify their fully-convective
status and hence the kind of magnetic dynamo in these components which may play
an important role to explain our detection of radio emission from these
objects. This also makes LP 349-25 an excellent target for further studies with
better constraints on the correlations between X-ray, radio emission and
stellar parameters such as mass, age, temperature, and luminosity in ultracool
dwarfs.Comment: accepted by ApJ, referee's comments included, typo in equation 1

Cosmology With Many Light Scalar Fields: Stochastic Inflation and Loop Corrections
We explore the consequences of the existence of a very large number of light
scalar degrees of freedom in the early universe. We distinguish between
participator and spectator fields. The former have a small mass, and can
contribute to the inflationary dynamics; the latter are either strictly
massless or have a negligible VEV. In N-flation and generic assisted inflation
scenarios, inflation is a co-operative phenomenon driven by N participator
fields, none of which could drive inflation on their own. We review upper
bounds on N, as a function of the inflationary Hubble scale H. We then consider
stochastic and eternal inflation in models with N participator fields showing
that individual fields may evolve stochastically while the whole ensemble
behaves deterministically, and that a wide range of eternal inflationary
scenarios are possible in this regime. We then compute one-loop quantum
corrections to the inflationary power spectrum. These are largest with N
spectator fields and a single participator field, and the resulting bound on N
is always weaker than those obtained in other ways. We find that loop
corrections to the N-flation power spectrum do not scale with N, and thus place
no upper bound on the number of participator fields. This result also implies
that, at least to leading order, the theory behaves like a composite single
scalar field. In order to perform this calculation, we address a number of
issues associated with loop calculations in the Schwinger-Keldysh "in-in"
formalism.Comment: Typos corrected. Matches published versio
Finite temperature Casimir pistons for electromagnetic field with mixed boundary conditions and its classical limit
In this paper, the finite temperature Casimir force acting on a
two-dimensional Casimir piston due to electromagnetic field is computed. It was
found that if mixed boundary conditions are assumed on the piston and its
opposite wall, then the Casimir force always tends to restore the piston
towards the equilibrium position, regardless of the boundary conditions assumed
on the walls transverse to the piston. In contrary, if pure boundary conditions
are assumed on the piston and the opposite wall, then the Casimir force always
tend to pull the piston towards the closer wall and away from the equilibrium
position. The nature of the force is not affected by temperature. However, in
the high temperature regime, the magnitude of the Casimir force grows linearly
with respect to temperature. This shows that the Casimir effect has a classical
limit as has been observed in other literatures.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Journal of Physics
Unexpected phase locking of magnetic fluctuations in the multi-k magnet USb
The spin waves in the multi-k antiferromagnet USb soften and become quasielastic well below the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TN. This occurs without a magnetic or structural transition. It has been suggested that this change is in fact due to dephasing of the different multi-k components: a switch from 3-k to 1-k behavior. In this work, we use inelastic neutron scattering with tridirectional polarization analysis to probe the quasielastic magnetic excitations and reveal that the 3-k structure does not dephase. More surprisingly, the paramagnetic correlations also maintain the same clear phase correlations well above TN (up to at least 1.4TN)
Response of low-strength phenol-acclimated activated sludge to shock loading of high phenol concentrations
(ii) investigate the degradation pathways and (iii) model the growth and biodegradation kinetics, all under the condition of increasingly higher phenol concentrations (step-up shock loading). With the use of activated sludge acclimated to phenol concentration of 140 mg∙ℓ−1 (low-strength phenol-acclimated activated sludge), complete degradation of phenol with a COD removal efficiency of more than 95% was achieved up to 1 050 mg∙ℓ−1 of initial phenol concentration. At low initial phenol concentrations, the experimental results were indicative of the meta-cleavage pathway for phenol degradation. When the initial phenol concentration was above 630 mg∙ℓ−1, the degradation results were indicative of both meta- and ortho-cleavage pathways. The values of the Haldane kinetic parameters indicated a low degree of inhibition exerted by the presence of increasing phenol concentration. This was substantiated by the observation that the rate constant of phenol removal decreased by only 33% even though the initial phenol concentration was increased by 15 times from 70 to 1 050 mg∙ℓ−1.Thus, the activated sludge acclimated to only 140 mg∙ℓ−1 of phenol could successfully treat up to 1 050 mg∙ℓ−1 of phenol without experiencing complete inhibition during the degradation process. Keywords: Phenol removal, low-strength phenol-acclimated activated sludge, degradation pathway, Haldane kinetic paramete
