Comment on ``Evidence for Narrow Baryon Resonances in Inelastic pp Scattering''
Compton scattering data are sensitive to the existence of low-mass resonances
reported by Tatischeff et al. We show that such states, with their reported
properties, are excluded by previous Compton scattering experiments.Comment: One page, submitted to PR
Quasi-free Compton Scattering from the Deuteron and Nucleon Polarizabilities
Cross sections for quasi-free Compton scattering from the deuteron were
measured for incident energies of 236--260 MeV at the laboratory angle -135
degrees. The recoil nucleons were detected in a liquid-scintillator array
situated at 20 degrees. The measured differential cross sections were used,
with the calculations of Levchuk et al., to determine the polarizabilities of
the bound nucleons. For the bound proton, the extracted values were consistent
with the accepted value for the free proton. Combining our results for the
bound neutron with those from Rose et al., we obtain one-sigma constraints of
alpha_n = 7.6-14.0 and beta_n = 1.2-7.6.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted in PR
Affine equivariant rank-weighted L-estimation of multivariate location
In the multivariate one-sample location model, we propose a class of flexible
robust, affine-equivariant L-estimators of location, for distributions invoking
affine-invariance of Mahalanobis distances of individual observations. An
involved iteration process for their computation is numerically illustrated.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, 6 table
Semiparametrically Efficient Inference Based on Signs and Ranks for Median Restricted Models
Since the pioneering work of Koenker and Bassett (1978), econometric models involving median and quantile rather than the classical mean or conditional mean concepts have attracted much interest.Contrary to the traditional models where the noise is assumed to have mean zero, median-restricted models enjoy a rich group-invariance structure. In this paper, we exploit this invariance structure in order to obtain semiparametrically efficient inference procedures for these models. These procedures are based on residual signs and ranks, and therefore insensitive to possible misspecification of the underlying innovation density, yet semiparametrically efficient at correctly specified densities. This latter combination is a definite advantage of these procedures over classical quasi-likelihood methods. The techniques we propose can be applied, without additional technical difficulties, to both cross-sectional and time-series models. They do not require any explicit tangent space calculation nor any projections on these.
Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering
We study in QCD the physics of deeply-virtual Compton scattering (DVCS)---the
virtual Compton process in the large s and small t kinematic region. We show
that DVCS can probe a new type of off-forward parton distributions. We derive
an Altarelli-Parisi type of evolution equations for these distributions. We
also derive their sum rules in terms of nucleon form-factors of the twist-two
quark and gluon operators. In particular, we find that the second sum rule is
related to fractions of the nucleon spin carried separately by quarks and
gluons. We estimate the cross section for DVCS and compare it with the
accompanying Bethe-Heitler process at CEBAF and HERMES kinematics.Comment: 20 pages, 2 figures, replaced with the version to appear in Phys.

Virtual Compton Scattering off the Nucleon in Chiral Perturbation Theory
We investigate the spin-independent part of the virtual Compton scattering
(VCS) amplitude off the nucleon within the framework of chiral perturbation
theory. We perform a consistent calculation to third order in external momenta
according to Weinberg's power counting. With this calculation we can determine
the second- and fourth-order structure-dependent coefficients of the general
low-energy expansion of the spin-averaged VCS amplitude based on gauge
invariance, crossing symmetry and the discrete symmetries. We discuss the
kinematical regime to which our calculation can be applied and compare our
expansion with the multipole expansion by Guichon, Liu and Thomas. We establish
the connection of our calculation with the generalized polarizabilities of the
nucleon where it is possible.Comment: 26 pages, 2 Postscript figures, RevTex using epsfi
Measurement of the Electric and Magnetic Polarizabilities of the Proton
The Compton scattering cross section on the proton has been measured at
laboratory angles of 90 and 135 using tagged photons in the
energy range 70--100 MeV and simultaneously using untagged photons in the range
100--148~MeV. With the aid of dispersion relations, these cross sections were
used to extract the electric and magnetic polarizabilities, and
respectively, of the proton. We find
in agreement with a model-independent dispersion sum rule, and
where the errors shown are statistical, systematic, and model-dependent,
respectively. A comparison with previous experiments is given and global values
for the polarizabilities are extracted.Comment: 35 pages, 11 PostScript figures, uses RevTex 3.
Dirac-Foldy term and the electromagnetic polarizability of the neutron
We reconsider the Dirac-Foldy contribution to the neutron electric
polarizability. Using a Dirac equation approach to neutron-nucleus scattering,
we review the definitions of Compton continuum (), classical
static (), and Schr\"{o}dinger () polarizabilities
and discuss in some detail their relationship. The latter is the
value of the neutron electric polarizability as obtained from an analysis using
the Schr\"{o}dinger equation. We find in particular , where is the magnitude of the magnetic moment
of a neutron of mass . However, we argue that the static polarizability
is correctly defined in the rest frame of the particle, leading to
the conclusion that twice the Dirac-Foldy contribution should be added to
to obtain the static polarizability .Comment: 11 pages, RevTeX, to appear in Physical Review
Complete one-loop analysis of the nucleon's spin polarizabilities
We present a complete one-loop analysis of the four nucleon spin
polarizabilities in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory.
The first non-vanishing contributions to the isovector and first corrections to
the isoscalar spin polarizabilities are calculated. No unknown parameters enter
these predictions. We compare our results to various dispersive analyses. We
also discuss the convergence of the chiral expansion and the role of the delta
isobar.Comment: 4 pp, REVTE
