On the Relation Between Peak Luminosity and Parent Population of Type Ia Supernovae: A New Tool for Probing the Ages of Distant Galaxies
We study the properties of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) as functions of the
radial distance from their host galaxy centers. Using a sample of 62 SNe Ia
with reliable luminosity, reddening, and decline rate determinations, we find
no significant radial gradients of SNe Ia peak absolute magnitudes or decline
rates in elliptical+S0 galaxies, suggesting that the diversity of SN properties
is not related to the metallicity of their progenitors. We do find that the
range in brightness and light curve width of supernovae in spiral galaxies
extends to brighter, broader values. These results are interpreted as support
for an age, but not metallicity, related origin of the diversity in SNe Ia. If
confirmed with a larger and more accurate sample of data, the age-luminosity
relation would offer a new and powerful tool to probe the ages and age
gradients of stellar populations in galaxies at redshift as high as .
The absence of significant radial gradients in the peak and colors of SNe Ia supports the redding correction method of Phillips et
al (1999). We find no radial gradient in residuals from the SN Ia
luminosity-width relation, suggesting that the relation is not affected by
properties of the progenitor populations and supporting the reliability of

Domain Dynamics of Magnetic Films with Perpendicular Anisotropy
We study the magnetic properties of nanoscale magnetic films with large
perpendicular anisotropy comparing polarization microscopy measurements on
Co_28Pt_72 alloy samples based on the magneto-optical Kerr effect with Monte
Carlo simulations of a corresponding micromagnetic model. We focus on the
understanding of the dynamics especially the temperature and field dependence
of the magnetisation reversal process. The experimental and simulational
results for hysteresis, the reversal mechanism, domain configurations during
the reversal, and the time dependence of the magnetisation are in very good
qualitative agreement. The results for the field and temperature dependence of
the domain wall velocity suggest that for thin films the hysteresis can be
described as a depinning transition of the domain walls rounded by thermal

New quasars behind the Magellanic Clouds. Spectroscopic confirmation of near-infrared selected candidates
Context. Quasi-stellar objects (quasars) located behind nearby galaxies provide an excellent absolute reference system for astrometric studies, but they are difficult to identify because of fore- and background contamination. Deep wide-field, high angular resolution surveys spanning the entire area of nearby galaxies are needed to obtain a complete census of such quasars. Aims. We embarked on a program to expand the quasar reference system behind the Large and the Small Magellanic Clouds, the Magellanic Bridge, and the Magellanic Stream that connects the Clouds with the Milky Way. Methods. Hundreds of quasar candidates were selected based on their near-infrared colors and variability properties from the ongoing public ESO VISTA Magellanic Clouds survey. A subset of 49 objects was followed up with optical spectroscopy. Results. We confirmed the quasar nature of 37 objects (34 new identifications): four are low redshift objects, three are probably stars, and the remaining three lack prominent spectral features for a secure classification. The bona fide quasars, identified from their broad emisison lines, are located as follows: 10 behind the LMC, 13 behind the SMC, and 14 behind the Bridge. The quasars span a redshift range from z ~ 0.5 to z ~ 4.1. Conclusions. Upon completion the VMC survey is expected to yield a total of ~1500 quasars with Y< 19.32âmag, J< 19.09âmag, and Ks< 18.04âmag
On Heavy-Quark Free Energies, Entropies, Polyakov Loop, and AdS/QCD
In this paper we explore some of the features of a heavy quark-antiquark pair
at finite temperature using a five-dimensional framework nowadays known as
AdS/QCD. We shall show that the resulting behavior is consistent with our
qualitative expectations of thermal gauge theory. Some of the results are in
good agreement with the lattice data that provides additional evidence for the

Floating stones off El Hierro, Canary Islands: xenoliths of pre-island sedimentary origin in the early products of the October 2011 eruption
The eruption that started off the south coast of El Hierro, Canary Islands, in October 2011 has emitted intriguing eruption products found floating in the sea. These specimens appeared as floating volcanic "bombs" that have in the meantime been termed "restingolites" (after the close-by village of La Restinga) and exhibit cores of white and porous pumice-like material. Currently the nature and origin of these "floating stones" is vigorously debated among researchers, with important implications for the interpretation of the hazard potential of the ongoing eruption. The "restingolites" have been proposed to be either (i) juvenile high-silica magma (e.g. rhyolite), (ii) remelted magmatic material (trachyte), (iii) altered volcanic rock, or (iv) reheated hyaloclastites or zeolite from the submarine slopes of El Hierro. Here, we provide evidence that supports yet a different conclusion. We have collected and analysed the structure and composition of samples and compared the results to previous work on similar rocks found in the archipelago. Based on their high silica content, the lack of igneous trace element signatures, and the presence of remnant quartz crystals, jasper fragments and carbonate relicts, we conclude that "restingolites" are in fact xenoliths from pre-island sedimentary rocks that were picked up and heated by the ascending magma causing them to partially melt and vesiculate. They hence represent messengers from depth that help us to understand the interaction between ascending magma and crustal lithologies in the Canary Islands as well as in similar Atlantic islands that rest on sediment/covered ocean crust (e.g. Cape Verdes, Azores). The occurrence of these "restingolites" does therefore not indicate the presence of an explosive high-silica magma that is involved in the ongoing eruption
A Medium-Resolution Near-Infrared Spectral Library of Late Type Stars: I
We present an empirical infrared spectral library of medium resolution
(R~2000-3000) H (1.6 micron) and K (2.2 micron) band spectra of 218 red stars,
spanning a range of [Fe/H] from ~-2.2 to ~+0.3. The sample includes Galactic
disk stars, bulge stars from Baade's window, and red giants from Galactic
globular clusters. We report the values of 19 indices covering 12 spectral
features measured from the spectra in the library. Finally, we derive
calibrations to estimate the effective temperature, and diagnostic
relationships to determine the luminosity classes of individual stars from
near-infrared spectra.
This paper is part of a larger effort aimed at building a near-IR spectral
library to be incorporated in population synthesis models, as well as, at
