Portable remote laser sensor for methane leak detection
A portable laser system for remote detection of methane gas leaks and concentrations is disclosed. The system transmitter includes first and second lasers, tuned respectively to a wavelength coincident with a strong absorption line of methane and a reference wavelength which is weakly absorbed by methane gas. The system receiver includes a spherical mirror for collecting the reflected laser radiation and focusing the collected radiation through a narrowband optical filter onto an optial detector. The filter is tuned to the wavelength of the two lasers, and rejects background noise. The output of the optical detector is processed by a lock-in detector synchronized to the chopper, and which measures the difference between the first wavelength signal and the reference wavelength signal
THE EFFECTS OF HALOTHANE ON CULTURED MOUSE NEUROBLASTOMA CELLS : I. Inhibition of Morphological Differentiation
Mouse neuroblastoma cells (clone NB2a) were cultured in the presence of 0.3–2.1% halothane in the gas phase for up to 72 h. Halothane inhibited neurite extension dose dependently and virtually abolished microspike formation even at the lowest concentration tested. These effects were completely reversible. Electron microscopy demonstrated that microfilaments measuring 40–80 Å in diameter are the only fibrous organelles visible within microspikes. When the cells were exposed to halothane, no microfilamentous complexes could be identified in any cells and the subcortical regions of neurites often appeared devoid of individual microfilaments. Microtubules were still present in neurites after exposure to halothane concentrations at which microfilaments disappeared. However, at concentrations above 1.0%, microtubules gradually appeared to decrease in number. Short-term experiments showed that existing neurites and microspikes rapidly retracted when suddenly exposed to culture medium equilibrated with 1.0% halothane and quickly reformed when the halothane was removed. The inhibition of neuroblastoma cell differentiation by halothane appears to be mediated by disruption of 40–80 Å diameter microfilaments
Implementing the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
Current research and declining test scores indicate that changes in educational practice are required for successful implementation of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM). Using a constructivist change theory framework, this grounded theory study explored the experiences 6 purposefully selected, experienced teachers at an Upstate New York school district had related to the implementation of the CCSSM. The research question investigated the experiences that educators had related to implementing the CCSSM and the accompanying New York State mathematics modules. Observation notes, interview transcripts, and teachers\u27 journals were collected and analysed simultaneously through coding, constant comparison, theoretical sampling, and memoing. The core concern that emerged was the lack of alignment between the standards and the curriculum being used to teach them. This lack of alignment was related to oversized and repetitive lessons, as well as the de-emphasis on teaching the mathematical practice standards that are a large part of CCSSM. These factors caused teachers to invest large amounts of time re-writing curriculum. Findings suggest that administrator-supported adaptive professional development is required to strategically address experienced educator needs while allowing for educator autonomy in curriculum design. The project, an adaptive professional development plan, will support experienced educators as they enact modifications to curriculum in order to address the changes in teacher practice and student learning that are needed to align instruction with CCSSM . This project can be used on a wider scale and can contribute to the knowledge base of implementation models for educators to enact the changes in instruction necessary to improve student mastery of the CCSSM
Poisson transition rates from time-domain measurements with finite bandwidth
In time-domain measurements of a Poisson two-level system, the observed
transition rates are always smaller than those of the actual system, a general
consequence of finite measurement bandwidth in an experiment. This
underestimation of the rates is significant even when the measurement and
detection apparatus is ten times faster than the process under study. We derive
here a quantitative form for this correction using a straightforward
state-transition model that includes the detection apparatus, and provide a
method for determining a system's actual transition rates from
bandwidth-limited measurements. We support our results with computer
simulations and experimental data from time-domain measurements of
quasiparticle tunneling in a single-Cooper-pair transistor.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Speckle Temporal Stability in eXtreme Adaptive Optics Coronagraphic Images
The major noise source limiting high-contrast imaging is due to the presence
of quasi-static speckles. Speckle noise originates from wavefront errors caused
by various independent sources, and it evolves on different timescales pending
to their nature. An understanding of quasi-static speckles originating from
instrumental errors is paramount for the search of faint stellar companions.
Instrumental speckles average to a fixed pattern, which can be calibrated to a
certain extent, but their temporal evolution ultimately limit this possibility.
This study focuses on the laboratory evidence and characterization of the
quasi-static pinned speckle phenomenon. Specifically, we examine the coherent
amplification of the static speckle contribution to the noise variance in the
scientific image, through its interaction with quasi-static speckles. The
analysis of a time series of adaptively corrected, coronagraphic images
recorded in the laboratory enables the characterization of the temporal
stability of the residual speckle pattern in both direct and differential
coronagraphic images. We estimate that spoiled and fast-evolving quasi-static
speckles present in the system at the angstrom/nanometer level are affecting
the stability of the static speckle noise in the final image after the
coronagraph. The temporal evolution of the quasi-static wavefront error
exhibits linear power law, which can be used in first order to model
quasi-static speckle evolution in high-contrast imaging instruments.Comment: A&A accepte
Physical Activity During the Early Years: A Systematic Review of Correlates and Determinants.
CONTEXT: Being physically active during the early years (age 0-6 years) is vital for healthy development. Identifying correlates and determinants of physical activity (PA) is crucial to guide effective interventions. This systematic review synthesized studies investigating potential correlates and determinants of PA during the early years, accounting for different types of PA assessment. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Nine electronic databases were searched from inception year (1900) until September 2014; data were analyzed/interpreted in April 2015. The following inclusion criteria were used: written in English, published in peer-reviewed journals, participants not in statutory/school education, and an observational design investigating associations between an exposure/variable, and a quantitative measure of PA. Correlates/determinants of total, moderate to vigorous, and light PA were reported using an ecologic model. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: Of 22,045 identified studies, 130 were included. All took place in high-income countries and few (6%) were of high quality. Correlates of total PA were sex (male, ++); parental PA (+); parental support (+); and time outdoors (+). Determinants of total PA were sex (+) and time spent playing with parents (+). The only correlate of moderate to vigorous PA was sex (male, ++). No determinants of moderate to vigorous or light PA were found. PA correlates/determinants were relatively consistent between objective and subjective PA measures. CONCLUSIONS: Numerous studies investigated potential correlates and determinants of PA, but overall quality was low. A small number of demographic/biological and social/cultural factors were associated with PA. There is a need for high-quality studies exploring correlates/determinants across all domains of the ecologic model
Effect of \u3ci\u3eLactobacillus acidophilus\u3c/i\u3e Strain N P51 on\u3ci\u3e Escherichia coli \u3c/i\u3e0157:H7 Fecal Shedding and Finishing Performance in Beef Feedlot Cattle
A 2-year study was conducted during the summer months (May to September) to test the effectiveness of feeding Lactobacillus acidophilus strain NP51 on the proportion of cattle shedding Escherichia coli 0157:H7 in the feces and evaluate the effect of the treatment on finishing performance. Steers (n = 448) were assigned randomly to pens, and pens of cattle were assigned randomly to NP5 1 supplementation or no supplementation (control). NP5 1 products were mixed with water and applied as the feed was mixed daily in treatment-designated trucks at the rate of l09 CFU per steer. Fecal samples were collected (n = 3,360) from the rectum from each animal every 3 weeks, and E. coli 0157:H7 was isolated by standard procedures, using selective enrichment, immunomagnetic separation, and PCR confirmation. The outcome variable was the recovery of E. coli 0157:H7 from feces, and was modeled using logistic regression accounting for year, repeated measures of pens of cattle, and block. No significant differences were detected for gain, intakes, or feed efficiency of control or NP51-fed steers. The probability for cattle to shed E. coli 0157:H7 varied significantly between 2002 and 2003 (P = 0.004). In 2002 and 2003, the probability for NP5 1-treated steers to shed E. coli 0157:H7 over the test periods was 13 and 21 %, respectively, compared with 21 and 28% among controls. Over the 2 years, NP51-treated steers were 35% less likely to shed E. coli 0157: H7 than were steers in untreated pens (odds ratio = 0.58, P = 0.008). This study is consistent with previous reports that feeding NP51 is effective in reducing E. coli 0157:H7 fecal shedding in feedlot cattle
Characterizing the Adaptive Optics Off-Axis Point-Spread Function - I: A Semi-Empirical Method for Use in Natural-Guide-Star Observations
Even though the technology of adaptive optics (AO) is rapidly maturing,
calibration of the resulting images remains a major challenge. The AO
point-spread function (PSF) changes quickly both in time and position on the
sky. In a typical observation the star used for guiding will be separated from
the scientific target by 10" to 30". This is sufficient separation to render
images of the guide star by themselves nearly useless in characterizing the PSF
at the off-axis target position. A semi-empirical technique is described that
improves the determination of the AO off-axis PSF. The method uses calibration
images of dense star fields to determine the change in PSF with field position.
It then uses this information to correct contemporaneous images of the guide
star to produce a PSF that is more accurate for both the target position and
the time of a scientific observation. We report on tests of the method using
natural-guide-star AO systems on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and Lick
Observatory Shane Telescope, augmented by simple atmospheric computer
simulations. At 25" off-axis, predicting the PSF full width at half maximum
using only information about the guide star results in an error of 60%. Using
an image of a dense star field lowers this error to 33%, and our method, which
also folds in information about the on-axis PSF, further decreases the error to
