    We show that net amplification of surface plasmons is achieved in channel in a metal plate due to nonradiative excitation by quantum dots. This makes possible lossless plasmon transmission lines in the channel as well as the amplification and generation of coherent surface plasmons. As an example, a ring channel spaser is considered

    From Bloch model to the rate equations II: the case of almost degenerate energy levels

    Bloch equations give a quantum description of the coupling between an atom and a driving electric force. In this article, we address the asymptotics of these equations for high frequency electric fields, in a weakly coupled regime. We prove the convergence towards rate equations (i.e. linear Boltzmann equations, describing the transitions between energy levels of the atom). We give an explicit form for the transition rates. This has already been performed in [BFCD03] in the case when the energy levels are fixed, and for different classes of electric fields: quasi or almost periodic, KBM, or with continuous spectrum. Here, we extend the study to the case when energy levels are possibly almost degenerate. However, we need to restrict to quasiperiodic forcings. The techniques used stem from manipulations on the density matrix and the averaging theory for ordinary differential equations. Possibly perturbed small divisor estimates play a key role in the analysis. In the case of a finite number of energy levels, we also precisely analyze the initial time-layer in the rate aquation, as well as the long-time convergence towards equilibrium. We give hints and counterexamples in the infinite dimensional case

    The effects of changes in the order of verbal labels and numerical values on children's scores on attitude and rating scales

    Research with adults has shown that variations in verbal labels and numerical scale values on rating scales can affect the responses given. However, few studies have been conducted with children. The study aimed to examine potential differences in children’s responses to Likert-type rating scales according to their anchor points and scale direction, and to see whether or not such differences were stable over time. 130 British children, aged 9 to 11, completed six sets of Likert-type rating scales, presented in four different ways varying the position of positive labels and numerical values. The results showed, both initially and 8-12 weeks later, that presenting a positive label or a high score on the left of a scale led to significantly higher mean scores than did the other variations. These findings indicate that different arrangements of rating scales can produce different results which has clear implications for the administration of scales with children

    Cumulant expansion for studying damped quantum solitons

    The quantum statistics of damped optical solitons is studied using cumulant-expansion techniques. The effect of absorption is described in terms of ordinary Markovian relaxation theory, by coupling the optical field to a continuum of reservoir modes. After introduction of local bosonic field operators and spatial discretization pseudo-Fokker-Planck equations for multidimensional s-parameterized phase-space functions are derived. These partial differential equations are equivalent to an infinite set of ordinary differential equations for the cumulants of the phase-space functions. Introducing an appropriate truncation condition, the resulting finite set of cumulant evolution equations can be solved numerically. Solutions are presented in Gaussian approximation and the quantum noise is calculated, with special emphasis on squeezing and the recently measured spectral photon-number correlations [Spaelter et al., Phys.     Spaser chains

    We show that depending on the values of the coupling constants, two different scenarios for the stationary behavior of a chain of interacting spasers may be realized: (1) all the spasers are synchronized and oscillate with a unique phase and (2) a nonlinear autowave travels along the chain. In the latter scenario, the traveling wave is harmonic unlike excitations in other known nonlinear systems. The amplitude of this wave is determined by pumping and the wavenumber is determined by the coupling constants. Due to the nonlinear nature of the system, any initial distribution of spasers' states evolves into one of these steady states
