    Sexuality Based Content in an Entry- Level Occupational Therapy Curriculum: A Content Analysis

    Sexuality is multifaceted and is developed across the lifespan. Researchers report little advancement, consistency, and knowledge regarding incorporation of sexuality into occupational therapy (OT) curricula, which supports the need for research. The purpose of this capstone project was two-fold: a) to conduct a content analysis of an entry-level OT curriculum to identify content gaps regarding addressing sexuality in practice; and b) to develop sexuality-based educational materials as a resource for the faculty for potential inclusion in future courses. The Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) is an evidenced-based model that was used in this project, in conjunction with notional sexuality educational standards, to frame the content analysis and develop sexuality-based materials. A curricular matrix was created to chart the extracted data based on the notional sexuality educational standards and constructs of MOHO. Results of this curricular analysis identified educational gaps within the OT curriculum. Of the 30 courses reviewed, 16 (53.33%) mentioned sexuality within online units, required readings, or assignments. However, 13 (43.3%) addressed sexuality only in passing, with no link to occupation. Required readings were noted as the most frequently used teaching method for sexuality content and the MOHO construct most frequently focused on was performance capacity. This indicates that although sexuality is mentioned throughout the OT curriculum, in most instances, it was not presented in depth.     The Crab pulsar light curve in the soft gamma ray range: FIGARO II results

    The FIGARO II experiment (a large area, balloon borne, crystal scintillator detector working from 0.15 to 4.3 MeV) observed the Crab pulsar on 1990 Jul. 9 for about seven hours. The study of the pulse profile confirms some structures detected with a low significance during the shorter observation of 1986, and adds new important elements to the picture. In particular, between the two main peaks, two secondary peaks appear centered at phase values 0.1 and 0.3, in the energy range 0.38 to 0.49 MeV; in the same energy range, a spectral feature at 0.44 MeV, interpreted as a redshifted positron annihilation line, was observed during the same balloon flight in the phase interval including the second main peak and the neighboring secondary peak. If the phase interval considered is extended to include also the other secondary peak, the significance of the spectral line appears to increase

    Chronic intravenous aminobisphosphonate therapy increases high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and decreases low-density lipoprotein cholesterol

    Nowadays, bisphosphonates are considered the drugs of choice for the treatment of several bone disorders. Their exact mechanism of action is not clear but recently it has been reported that the aminobisphosphonates inhibit cholesterol biosynthesis and that this might be relevant for their actions on bone osteoclasts. The study includes 87 postmenopausal women with moderate to severe osteoporosis. The patients were randomly assigned to intravenous (iv) infusion of 50 mg of the aminobisphosphonate Neridronate dissolved in 100 ml of saline solution every 2 months for a year (44 patients). The remaining 43 served as controls. At the time of each infusion blood samples were obtained for the evaluation of total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein A-I (Apo A-I), apolipoprotein B (Apo B), and total and bone alkaline phosphatase (AP). Free deoxypyridinoline (f-DPD) was measured in fasting urine specimens. In the control group no significant changes were observed throughout the study period for any of the biochemical variables. In the Neridronate-treated patients both bone AP and f-DPD excretion fell significantly by 15-20%. In these patients serum total cholesterol and serum triglycerides showed marginal decreases, which were occasionally significant. LDL-C and Apo B fell by 5-6% and these changes were statistically significant at most time points. Apo A-I and HDL-C rose progressively with time. At the 12th month, HDL-C rose 17-18% (p < 0.0001) above the baseline values. Similar findings were obtained in four postmenopausal women given high iv doses of Pamidronate or Alendronate. In conclusion aminobisphophonates, at least when given iv, induce remarkable and unexpected effects on lipid metabolism with a final profile that might be clinically relevant

    Modeling provincial Covid-19 epidemic data in Italy using an adjusted time-dependent SIRD model

    In this paper we develop a predictive model for the spread of COVID-19 infection at a provincial (i.e. EU NUTS-3) level in Italy by using official data from the Italian Ministry of Health integrated with data extracted from daily official press conferences of regional authorities and from local newspaper websites. This integration is mainly concerned with COVID-19 cause specific death data which are not available at NUTS-3 level from open official data data channels. An adjusted time-dependent SIRD model is used to predict the behavior of the epidemic, specifically the number of susceptible, infected, deceased and recovered people.     Numerical modeling of bifacial PV string performance: Perimeter effect and influence of uniaxial solar trackers

    The bifacial photovoltaic (PV) systems have recently met large interest. The performance of such systems heavily depends on the installation conditions and, in particular, on the albedo radiation collected by the module rear side. Therefore, it is of crucial importance to have an accurate performance model. To date, in the scientific literature, numerous models have been proposed and experimental data collected to study and optimize bifacial PV system performance. Currently, 3D and 2D models of bifacial PV devices exist. Though the former are more mathematically complex, they can lead to more accurate results, since they generally allow to fully consider the main aspects influencing a bifacial PV system performance. Recently, we have proposed and validated through experimental data a 3D model tested as a function of module height, tilt angle, and ground albedo. In this work, through such a model, we studied the role played by the perimeter zones surrounding the PV string, by considering PV strings of 30 or 60 modules. We considered the cases of fixed installation with optimal PV module tilt and of installation with uniaxial horizontal solar tracker. We evaluated the PV energy yield as a function of the size of the perimeter zones for the two cases, i.e., both with and without the solar tracker. In optimal perimeter conditions, we then studied the behavior of bifacial and mono-facial PV strings by varying the geographical location in a large latitude range

    A simple model of radiative emission in M87

    We present a simple physical model of the central source emission in the M87 galaxy. It is well known that the observed X-ray luminosity from this galactic nucleus is much lower than the predicted one, if a standard radiative efficiency is assumed. Up to now the main model invoked to explain such a luminosity is the ADAF (Advection-Dominated-Accretion-Flow) model. Our approach supposes only a simple axis-symmetric adiabatic accretion with a low angular momentum together with the bremsstrahlung emission process in the accreting gas. With no other special hypothesis on the dynamics of the system, this model agrees well enough with the luminosity value measured by Chandra.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa
