JFG's research was conducted within the Lyon Institute of Origins under grant ANR-10-LABX-66.We aim to derive a simple analytic model to understand the essential properties of vertically settling growing dust grains in laminar protoplanetary discs. Separating the vertical dynamics from the motion in the disc mid-plane, we integrate the equations of motion for both a linear and an exponential grain growth rate. Numerical integrations are performed for more complex growth models. We find that the settling efficiency depends on the value of the dimensionless parameter γ , which characterizes the relative efficiency of grain growth with respect to the gas drag. Since γ is expected to be of the same order as the initial dust-to-gas ratio in the disc (≃10−2), grain growth enhances the energy dissipation of the dust particles and improves the settling efficiency in protoplanetary discs. This behaviour is mostly independent of the growth model considered as well as of the radial drift of the particles.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
RVB signatures in the spin dynamics of the square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet
We investigate the spin dynamics of the square-lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg
antiferromagnet by means of an improved mean field Schwinger boson calculation.
By identifying both, the long range N\'eel and the RVB-like components of the
ground state, we propose an educated guess for the mean field triplet
excitation consisting on a linear combination of local and bond spin flips to
compute the dynamical structure factor. Our main result is that when this
triplet excitation is optimized in such a way that the corresponding sum rule
is fulfilled, we recover the low and high energy spectral weight features of
the experimental spectrum. In particular, the anomalous spectral weight
depletion at found in recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments
can be attributed to the interference of the triplet bond excitations of the
RVB component of the ground state. We conclude that the Schwinger boson theory
seems to be a good candidate to adequately interpret the dynamic properties of
the square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet.Comment: 6 pages with 3 figure
EVALUATION OF THE ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF THE FLAVONOIDS ISOLATED FROM HELIOTROPIUM SINUATUM RESIN USING ORACFL, DPPH AND ESR METHODOLOGIES
Indexación: Web of Science; Scielo. The antioxidant capacity has been determined for a number of flavonoid compounds from Heliotropium sinuatum, a plant that grows in arid areas in the north of Chile. The methodologies used were: ORAC(FL) (oxygen radical absorbance capacity - fluorescein), DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) bleaching and electron spin resonance (ESR). These compounds were studied in homogeneous and heterogeneous media. The results showed that the 7-o-methyleriodictiol and 3-o-methylisorhamnetin are those with the highest antioxidant capacity.http://ref.scielo.org/m82cz
The Mass of the Convective Zone in FGK Main Sequence Stars and the Effect of Accreted Planetary Material on Apparent Metallicity Determinations
The mass of the outer convective zone in FGK main sequence stars decreases
dramatically with stellar mass. Therefore, any contamination of a star's
atmosphere by accreted planetary material should affect hotter stars much more
than cool stars. If recent suggestions that high metal abundances in stars with
planets are caused by planetesimal accretion are correct, then metallicity
enhancements in earlier-type stars with planets should be very pronounced. No
such trend is seen, however.Comment: Submitted ApJ Letters March 26th; accepted April 30th. 12 pages, 2
