Quality Leadership; Condition Precedent on Education for All by the Year 2015: Nigeria at the Crossroads

    Get PDF
Nigeria is a signatory to the declaration of the Millennium Development Goals in New York in 2000 and the Dakar ratification of that document geared towards substantially alleviating the effects of absolute poverty and achieving Education for all in its various manifestations by the year 2015. Through situation analysis, the paper posited that in the Nigeria characteristic manner of shifting the goal posts, the attainment of this goal is a farce. This is consequent upon misconceptions and inconsistencies resulting from the exercise of leadership by people whose pre-occupations are not in tandem with those whose affairs they superintend. The leadership is therefore challenged to be qualitative if the nationā€™s milestones would escape the disdainful story that portrays her as a country where noble policies suffer setback Keywords: Quality, Leadership, Quality leadership, Education, Development

P-T conditions of Pan-African orogeny in southeastern Nigeria

    Get PDF
Abstract Different rock types from the area northeast of Obudu, southeastern Nigeria were investigated in order to place constraints on their metamorphic conditions. Detailed petrographic studies indicate four main rock groups in the studied area, namely migmatitic gneiss, migmatitic schist, granite gneiss and a minor amount of amphibolite, metagabbro and dolerite. The chemistry of minerals in these rocks is used to estimate metamorphic pressure and temperature (P-T) using appropriate geothermometers and geobarometers. The estimated temperature for migmatitic gneiss of the area is āˆ¼600ā€“625 Ā°C and 600ā€“650 Ā°C for migmatitic schist; the pressure is āˆ¼ 8 kbar. For amphibolite the temperature is āˆ¼600ā€“700 Ā°C and pressure is 8ā€“12 kbar. The estimated pressures and temperatures for the northeast Obudu rocks correspond to upper amphibolite to lower granulite facies metamorphism. The metamorphism occurred due to continent-continent collision during the Pan-African orogeny, most likely during the D1 deformational phase of the area. The recorded high pressures possibly resulted from crustal thickening in the area. P-T conditions for Pan-African orogeny in northeast Obudu area are in good agreement with P-T estimations for the Pan-African event in adjacent areas

Studies were conducted as an on-farm trial at Evboneka in 2009 and 2010 cropping seasons to estimate the effect of soil amendments in enhancing soil fertility status and relative agronomic efficacy of maize yield in humid ultisol environment. Effects of compost was investigated at application rates of 20 and 40 t ha-1 while NPK and organo-mineral fertilizer effects were investigated at 200 kg/ha and a combination of 100 kg/ha NPK and 20 t/ha compost manure (organo-mineral fertilizer) with maize TZEE-W cultivar resulting in five treatments and replicated three times. The results obtained revealed that the tested soil was low in organic matter, total N, available P, moderately acidic and low cations (Ca, Mg and K). The compost manure was rich in N, P, Mg, K, organic carbon and Ca concentration. The application of compost manure and NPK to the soil improved the soil fertility status. The highest maize height (132.70 cm), greatest total dry weight (0.63 t ha-1) and relative agronomic efficacy (%) were obtained from plots treated with 40 t/ha-1 compost manure while the plots treated with organo-mineral had the greatest LAI (2.75)

Education for sustainability through academic freedom

    Get PDF
Most challenging developments in Nigeria in recent times are the issues of poverty, human right, genderĀ inequality, cultural diversity and education for all. These issues have eaten deep into the society thatĀ policy makers and stake-holders in education are worried and are in search for possible solutions. PastĀ researches are of the opinion that education for sustainable development and academic freedom couldĀ assist in solving these ethical menaces. Education for sustainable development allows every humanĀ being to acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future toĀ make judgments and choices in favor of sustainable lifestyle. In the same vein, academic freedom leadsĀ to the expansion and discovery of new ideas of knowledge, transmits and preserves culture developedĀ in the learnerā€™s independent judgment of an environment free from external control and domination.Ā Educational opportunities that Nigerian children would have enjoyed through Education For All toĀ achieve sustainability and self reliance is lacking due to factors enumerated above. In this contribution,Ā we reviewed issues that pertain to how Education For All can be sustained and their goals achieved soĀ that every child in Nigeria could be given equal rights to read and write irrespective of his or her tribe,Ā age, background and gender.KEYWORDS Sustainability, Academic Freedom, Education, Gender, Opportunity

Analysis and analytic techniques in African music: A theory of melodic scales

    Get PDF
In our present study, we intend to show that a systematic analysis of the music of black Africa reveals an internal structural government of extraordinary order and symmetry. This study deals with the theory of melodic scales. Our examples will be taken from one area of Africa, the music of the Igbo of Nigeria; we have, however, shown elsewhere that examples of the same or a similar system operating in the music of other areas of black Africa abound in large numbers

    Get PDF
The aim of the study was to ascertain the impact of apprenticeship system among agricultural education lecturers in Nigerian Universities. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design. The study was conducted in Nigerian Universities. Six universities comprising one university each from the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria was randomly selected for the study. The study had a population of 86 agricultural education lecturers in the sampled universities. Out of the 86 lecturers, 41 lecturers were purposively sampled which consisted of all agricultural education lecturers with five years or less of work experience. Data was collected from the participants with the use of focus group discussion. Data collected were analyzed qualitatively. Points which were suggested by a majority of the participants formed part of the findings of the study. The researcher used the points raised to make inference. The findings of the study revealed that younger lecturers carry out many academic and non academic activities for their senior colleagues. It also revealed that these activities have positive and negative impacts on the academic and personal life of the participants. The study therefore recommended among others that senior and younger agricultural education lecturers are encouraged to have a gentleman agreement before agreeing to partake in apprenticeship system and senior colleagues should ensure that the personal responsibilities of younger lecturers are considered before dishing out personal responsibilities to them

TheObjective of the study is to assess the Health Seeking Behaviour ofmotherswhen their children presentwith the common aliments and their preferred treatment options. A cross sectional survey of 300 women that brought their children for routine immunization and growthmonitoring to three health institutions in Enugumetropolis was carried out using an interviewer administered structured questionnaire. Majority of the mothers, 208(69.3%) used self treatment for their children at home when they presented with common illnesses.Atotal of 146(48.7%) made use of government health institutions, 117(39. 0%) attended private health institutions while 21(7.0%) consulted an elder woman and 9 (.0%) patronized prayer house.Only 3(1%) respondents sought the help of traditional healers. In this study, the greater percentage of mothers used self medication for treatment of common childhood illnesses. The implication of this is that themajority of themothersmay not know the right treatment to institute at any point in time. This situation could lead to more complications of the illnesses or even loss of life.As a result, mothers should be educated on how best to take care of their sick children athome and be able to recognizewhen to seek appropriate help. Keywords: Health SeekingBehavior,Mothers,CommonChildhood Illnesse

Study on Chemical Treatments of Jute Fiber for Application in Natural Fiber Reinforced Composites (NFRPC)

Research and studies on the use of natural ļ¬bers as replacement to man-made ļ¬ber in ļ¬ber-reinforced composites have increased and opened up further industrial possibilities. Natural ļ¬bers have the advantages of low density, low cost, biodegradability, recyclable, low pesticide and thus environmentally friendly. However, the main disadvantages of natural ļ¬bers in composites are the poor compatibility between ļ¬ber and matrix and the relative high moisture sorption. Therefore, chemical treatments are considered in modifying the ļ¬ber surface properties. In this paper, the different chemical modiļ¬cations and treatments on jute ļ¬bers for use in natural ļ¬ber-reinforced composites are reviewed. Chemical treatments including alkali, permanganate treatments and others are discussed. The chemical treatment of ļ¬ber aimed at improving the adhesion between the ļ¬ber surface and the polymer matrix may not only modify the ļ¬ber surface but also increase ļ¬ber strength. Water absorption of composites is reduced and their mechanical properties are improved
