    Negligent Infliction of Emotional Distress: New Tort Problem for the Mass Media

    Negligent infliction of emotional distress is becoming an increasingly popular cause of action to be utilized against media defendants. This article begins by tracing the development of the tort and explaining its central elements through cases involving mass media defendants. It studies the relationship between negligent infliction and the torts of libel, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. After considering the appropriate balance between expression and emotional tranquility, it is concluded that negligent infliction actions present an ominous threat to the free flow of expression. Sound policy considerations, flowing in part from the first amendment, dictate that such actions be limited. Finally, appropriate limits are suggested

    The Counting of Generalized Polarizabilities

    We demonstrate a concise method to enumerate the number of generalized polarizabilities---quantities characterizing the independent observables in singly-virtual Compton scattering---for a target particle of arbitrary spin s.     Generalized sum rules of the nucleon in the constituent quark model

    We study the generalized sum rules and polarizabilities of the nucleon in the framework of the hypercentral constituent quark model. We include in the calculation all the well known 33^* and 44^* resonances and consider all the generalized sum rules for which there are data available. To test the model dependence of the calculation, we compare our results to the results obtained in the harmonic oscillator CQM. We furthermore confront our results to the model-independent sum rules values and to the predictions of the phenomenological MAID model. The CQM calculations provide a good description of most of the presented generalized sum rules in the intermediate Q2Q^2 region (above 0.2\sim0.2 GeV2^2) while they encounter difficulties in describing these observables at low Q2Q^2, where the effects of the pion cloud, not included in the present calculation, are expected to be important.Comment: 26 pages, 10 figure

    Baryon Resonance Analysis from MAID

    The unitary isobar model MAID2007 has been used to analyze the recent data of pion electroproduction. The model contains all four-star resonances in the region below W=2 GeV and both single-Q^2 and Q^2 dependent transition form factors could be obtained for the Delta, Roper, D13(1520), S11(1535), S31(1620), S11(1650), D15(1675), F15(1680) and P13(1720). From the complete world data base, including also pi- data on the neutron, also Q^2 dependent neutron form factors are obtained. For all transition form factors we also give convenient numerical parameterizations that can be used in other reactions. Furthermore, we show how the transition form factors can be used to obtain empirical transverse charge densities and our first results are given for the Roper, the S11 and D13 resonances.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables, Proc. of NSTAR2009, Beijin

    Inelastic photon scattering and the magnetic moment of the Δ\Delta (1232) resonance

    The reaction γ+pγ+p+π0\gamma+p\to\gamma'+p+\pi^0 has been suggested as a means to deduce the Δ+\Delta^+ magnetic moment. The cross section for this process is estimated in both the constituent quark model and an effective Lagrangian procedure. The resulting total cross section is of the order 5-10 nb, which is at the limit of present experimental capabilities.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

    Study of polarization observables in double pion photoproduction on the proton

    Using a model for two pion photoproduction on the proton previously tested in total cross sections and invariant mass distributions, we evaluate here polarization observables on which recent experiments are providing new information. We evaluate cross sections for spin 1/2 and 3/2, which are measured at Mainz and play an important role in tests of the GHD sum rule. We also evaluate the proton polarization asymmetry Σ\Sigma which is currently under investigation at GRAAL in Grenoble.Comment: 23 pages, 14 ps figure
