Reproduction of an isolated Iranian cichlid, Iranocichla hormuzensis
The reproductive biology of the Iranian cichlid, Iranocichla hormuzensis Coad, 1988, was investigated for 13 consecutive months in lower Mehran River, from August 2008 through August 2009. Four hundred and eighty six individuals (252 males and 234 females) were captured using a seine net (5 mm mesh size). The observed sex ratio was 1M: 0.93F (χ², df = 1, P = 0.414). Mean ± SD of total length (TL) values in males and females were 70.34 ± 8.16 and 62.08 ± 6.51 mm, respectively. The frequency of 56-65 mm size class was higher in females and the 66-75 mm size class in males. A gonadosomatic index (GSI) analyses of females indicated that the reproductive period was during February-June, with a peak in March. Fecundity was best correlated with total body mass (M) (linear regression, r2 = 0.62) condition factor (linear regression, r2 = 0.62) and total length (TL) (linear regression, r2 = 0.56).The absolute fecundity ranged between 48-167 eggs with a Mean ± SD of 107 ± 35.2. Le transculturalisme des créations littéraires franco-persanes depuis les années 1980
My research is based on
transculturalism in the works of Iranian authors living in France since
the 1980’s. Referring to the cultural interbreeding, transculturalism
constitutes a field of research, which is becoming increasingly
important in numerous countries. In literature this concept concerns
hybrid works, i.e. works emanating from two or more different cultures.
In French-Persian creations it shows the mixture between a Western
tradition of novel and the dominating place of lyricism and poetry in
the Eastern writing. It may open also to an interesting course of
reflection in the cultural and social domain of multiculturalism and
transculturalism more in general. It aims at current issues seen from a
double perspective: the interdependency of the different cultures and a
new type of literature from the perspective of writing.
Those creations are intermediary between the artist in exile and the
receiving society. They transmit values of interculturalism, permitting
interaction between cultures. But also represent transculturalism, which
transcends the simple ‘dialogue’ between two cultures to reach an
original synthesis. My goal was to search hybrid factors in these works
and to see how they are carried out concretely in the texts. Then we see

Clinical and parasitological response to oral chloroquine and primaquine in uncomplicated human Plasmodium knowlesi infections
Background: Plasmodium knowlesi is a cause of symptomatic and potentially fatal infections in humans. There are no studies assessing the detailed parasitological response to treatment of knowlesi malaria infections in man and whether antimalarial resistance occurs. Methods: A prospective observational study of oral chloroquine and primaquine therapy was conducted in consecutive patients admitted to Kapit Hospital, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo with PCR-confirmed single P. knowlesi infections. These patients were given oral chloroquine for three days, and at 24 hours oral primaquine was administered for two consecutive days, primarily as a gametocidal agent. Clinical and parasitological responses were recorded at 6-hourly intervals during the first 24 hours, daily until discharge and then weekly to day 28. Vivax malaria patients were studied as a comparator group. Results: Of 96 knowlesi malaria patients who met the study criteria, 73 were recruited to an assessment of the acute response to treatment and 60 completed follow-up over 28 days. On admission, the mean parasite stage distributions were 49.5%, 41.5%, 4.0% and 5.6% for early trophozoites, late trophozoites, schizonts and gametocytes respectively. The median fever clearance time was 26.5 [inter-quartile range 16-34] hours. The mean times to 50% (PCT50) and 90% (PCT90) parasite clearance were 3.1 (95% confidence intervals [CI] 2.8-3.4) hours and 10.3 (9.4-11.4) hours. These were more rapid than in a group of 23 patients with vivax malaria 6.3 (5.3-7.8) hours and 20.9 (17.6-25.9) hours; P = 0.02). It was difficult to assess the effect of primaquine on P. knowlesi parasites, due to the rapid anti-malarial properties of chloroquine and since primaquine was administered 24 hours after chloroquine. No P. knowlesi recrudescences or re-infections were detected by PCR. Conclusions: Chloroquine plus primaqine is an inexpensive and highly effective treatment for uncomplicated knowlesi malaria infections in humans and there is no evidence of drug resistance. Further studies using alternative anti-malarial drugs, including artemisinin derivatives, would be desirable to define optimal management strategies for P. knowlesi.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Resistance spikes and domain wall loops in Ising quantum Hall ferromagnets
We explain the recent observation of resistance spikes and hysteretic
transport properties in Ising quantum Hall ferromagnets in terms of the unique
physics of their domain walls. Self-consistent RPA/Hartree-Fock theory is
applied to microscopically determine properties of the ground state and
domain-wall excitations. In these systems domain wall loops support
one-dimensional electron systems with an effective mass comparable to the bare
electron mass and may carry charge. Our theory is able to account
quantitatively for the experimental Ising critical temperature and to explain
characteristics of the resistive hysteresis loops.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Porous SnO2-Cu x O nanocomposite thin film on carbon nanotubes as electrodes for high performance supercapacitors.
Metal oxides are promising materials for supercapacitors due to their high theoretical capacitance. However, their poor electrical conductivity is a major challenge. Hybridization with conductive nanostructured carbon-based materials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been proposed to improve the conductivity and increase the surface area. In this work, CNTs are used as a template for synthesizing porous thin films of SnO2-CuO-Cu2O (SnO2-Cu x O) via an electroless deposition technique. Tin, with its high wettability and electrical conductivity, acts as an intermediate layer between copper and the CNTs and provides a strong interaction between them. We also observed that by controlling the interfacial characteristics of CNTs and varying the composition of the electroless bath, the SnO2-Cu x O thin film morphology can be easily manipulated. Electrochemical characterizations show that CNT/SnO2-Cu x O nanocomposite possesses pseudocapacitive behavior that reaches a specific capacitance of 662 F g-1 and the retention is 94% after 5000 cycles, which outperforms any known copper and tin-based supercapacitors in the literature. This excellent performance is mainly attributed to high specific surface area, small particle size, the synergistic effect of Sn, and conductivity improvement by using CNTs. The combination of CNTs and metal oxides holds promise for supercapacitors with improved performance.Lloyds Register Foundation

Biomarkers for exposure to ambient air pollution--comparison of carcinogen-DNA adduct levels with other exposure markers and markers for oxidative stress.
Human exposure to genotoxic compounds present in ambient air has been studied using selected biomarkers in nonsmoking Danish bus drivers and postal workers. A large interindividual variation in biomarker levels was observed. Significantly higher levels of bulky carcinogen-DNA adducts (75.42 adducts/10(8) nucleotides) and of 2-amino-apidic semialdehyde (AAS) in plasma proteins (56.7 pmol/mg protein) were observed in bus drivers working in the central part of Copenhagen, Denmark. In contrast, significantly higher levels of AAS in hemoglobin (55.8 pmol/mg protein), malondialdehyde in plasma (0. 96 nmol/ml plasma), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-albumin adduct (3.38 fmol/ microg albumin) were observed in the suburban group. The biomarker levels in postal workers were similar to the levels in suburban bus drivers. In the combined group of bus drivers and postal workers, negative correlations were observed between bulky carcinogen-DNA adduct and PAH-albumin levels (p = 0.005), and between DNA adduct and [gamma]-glutamyl semialdehyde (GGS) in hemoglobin (p = 0.11). Highly significant correlations were found between PAH-albumin adducts and AAS in plasma (p = 0.001) and GGS in hemoglobin (p = 0.001). Significant correlations were also observed between urinary 8-oxo-7, 8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine and AAS in plasma (p = 0.001) and PAH-albumin adducts (p = 0.002). The influence of the glutatione S-transferase (GST) M1 deletion on the correlation between the biomarkers was studied in the combined group. A significant negative correlation was only observed between bulky carcinogen-DNA adducts and PAH-albumin adducts (p = 0.02) and between DNA adduct and urinary mutagenic activity (p = 0.02) in the GSTM1 null group, but not in the workers who were homozygotes or heterozygotes for GSTM1. Our results indicate that some of the selected biomarkers can be used to distinguish between high and low exposure to environmental genotoxins
Clinicopathological evaluation of chronic traumatic encephalopathy in players of American football
IMPORTANCE: Players of American football may be at increased risk of long-term neurological conditions, particularly chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
OBJECTIVE: To determine the neuropathological and clinical features of deceased football players with CTE.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Case series of 202 football players whose brains were donated for research. Neuropathological evaluations and retrospective telephone clinical assessments (including head trauma history) with informants were performed blinded. Online questionnaires ascertained athletic and military history.
EXPOSURES: Participation in American football at any level of play.
MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Neuropathological diagnoses of neurodegenerative diseases, including CTE, based on defined diagnostic criteria; CTE neuropathological severity (stages I to IV or dichotomized into mild [stages I and II] and severe [stages III and IV]); informant-reported athletic history and, for players who died in 2014 or later, clinical presentation, including behavior, mood, and cognitive symptoms and dementia.
RESULTS: Among 202 deceased former football players (median age at death, 66 years [interquartile range, 47-76 years]), CTE was neuropathologically diagnosed in 177 players (87%; median age at death, 67 years [interquartile range, 52-77 years]; mean years of football participation, 15.1 [SD, 5.2]), including 0 of 2 pre–high school, 3 of 14 high school (21%), 48 of 53 college (91%), 9 of 14 semiprofessional (64%), 7 of 8 Canadian Football League (88%), and 110 of 111 National Football League (99%) players. Neuropathological severity of CTE was distributed across the highest level of play, with all 3 former high school players having mild pathology and the majority of former college (27 [56%]), semiprofessional (5 [56%]), and professional (101 [86%]) players having severe pathology. Among 27 participants with mild CTE pathology, 26 (96%) had behavioral or mood symptoms or both, 23 (85%) had cognitive symptoms, and 9 (33%) had signs of dementia. Among 84 participants with severe CTE pathology, 75 (89%) had behavioral or mood symptoms or both, 80 (95%) had cognitive symptoms, and 71 (85%) had signs of dementia.

Highly Anisotropic Transport in the Integer Quantum Hall Effect
At very large tilt of the magnetic (B) field with respect to the plane of a
two-dimensional electron system the transport in the integer quantum Hall
regime at = 4, 6, and 8 becomes strongly anisotropic. At these filling
factors the usual {\em deep minima} in the magneto-resistance occur for the
current flowing {\em perpendicular} to the in-plane B field direction but
develop into {\em strong maxima} for the current flowing {\em parallel} to the
in-plane B field. The origin of this anisotropy is unknown but resembles the
