    FISH mapping and molecular organization of the major repetitive sequences of tomato

    This paper presents a bird's-eye view of the major repeats and chromatin types of tomato. Using fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) with Cot-1, Cot-10 and Cot-100 DNA as probes we mapped repetitive sequences of different complexity on pachytene complements. Cot-100 was found to cover all heterochromatin regions, and could be used to identify repeat-rich clones in BAC filter hybridization. Next we established the chromosomal locations of the tandem and dispersed repeats with respect to euchromatin, nucleolar organizer regions (NORs), heterochromatin, and centromeres. The tomato genomic repeats TGRII and TGRIII appeared to be major components of the pericentromeres, whereas the newly discovered TGRIV repeat was found mainly in the structural centromeres. The highly methylated NOR of chromosome 2 is rich in [GACA](4), a microsatellite that also forms part of the pericentromeres, together with [GA](8), [GATA](4) and Ty1-copia. Based on the morphology of pachytene chromosomes and the distribution of repeats studied so far, we now propose six different chromatin classes for tomato: (1) euchromatin, (2) chromomeres, (3) distal heterochromatin and interstitial heterochromatic knobs, (4) pericentromere heterochromatin, (5) functional centromere heterochromatin and (6) nucleolar organizer regio

These permissions are granted for the duration of the World Health Organization (WHO) declaration of COVID-19 as a global pandemic.It has been estimated that genitourinary malignancies will account for 25% of new cancer diagnoses in the United States in 2005 (Jemal et al. 2005). While the incidence of many of these malignancies has increased over the past two decades, the mortality rates appear to be decreasing. Early cancer detection combined with improvements in surgical and nonsurgical oncologic therapy account for these trends. Although not common, newly diagnosed cancer patients occasionally present in an emergent, life-threatening manner that warrants immediate medical or surgical intervention. As the prevalence of genitourinary malignancies continues to expand, additional patients can be expected to develop disease or treatment-related complications. This chapter will serve to review the diagnosis and management of oncologic emergencies as they pertain to the urologist

    Constitutive heterochromatin in Arabidopsis thaliana is marked by repressive chromatin modifications, including DNA methylation, histone H3 dimethylation at Lys9 (H3K9me2) and monomethylation at Lys27 (H3K27me1). The enzymes catalyzing DNA methylation and H3K9me2 have been identified; alterations in these proteins lead to reactivation of silenced heterochromatic elements. The enzymes responsible for heterochromatic H3K27me1, in contrast, remain unknown. Here we show that the divergent SET-domain proteins ARABIDOPSIS TRITHORAX-RELATED PROTEIN 5 (ATXR5) and ATXR6 have H3K27 monomethyltransferase activity, and atxr5 atxr6 double mutants have reduced H3K27me1 in vivo and show partial heterochromatin decondensation. Mutations in atxr5 and atxr6 also lead to transcriptional activation of repressed heterochromatic elements. Notably, H3K9me2 and DNA methylation are unaffected in double mutants. These results indicate that ATXR5 and ATXR6 form a new class of H3K27 methyltransferases and that H3K27me1 represents a previously uncharacterized pathway required for transcriptional repression in Arabidopsis

    A study of 15N14N isotopic exchange over cobalt molybdenum nitrides

    The 14N/15N isotopic exchange pathways over Co3Mo3N, a material of interest as an ammonia synthesis catalyst and for the development of nitrogen transfer reactions, have been investigated. Both the homomolecular and heterolytic exchange processes have been studied, and it has been shown that lattice nitrogen species are exchangeable. The exchange behavior was found to be a strong function of pretreatment with ca. 25% of lattice N atoms being exchanged after 40 min at 600 °C after N2 pretreatment at 700 °C compared to only 6% following similar Ar pretreatment. This observation, for which the potential contribution of adsorbed N species can be discounted, is significant in terms of the application of this material. In the case of the Co6Mo6N phase, regeneration to Co3Mo3N under 15N2 at 600 °C occurs concurrently with 14N15N formation. These observations demonstrate the reactivity of nitrogen in the Co–Mo–N system to be a strong function of pretreatment and worthy of further consideration

    The spin temperature of high-redshift damped Lyman-α\alpha systems

    We report results from a programme aimed at investigating the temperature of neutral gas in high-redshift damped Lyman-α\alpha absorbers (DLAs). This involved (1) HI 21cm absorption studies of a large DLA sample, (2) VLBI studies to measure the low-frequency quasar core fractions, and (3) optical/ultraviolet spectroscopy to determine DLA metallicities and velocity widths. Including literature data, our sample consists of 37 DLAs with estimates of the spin temperature TsT_s and the covering factor. We find a strong 4σ4\sigma) difference between the TsT_s distributions in high-z (z>2.4) and low-z (z<2.4) DLA samples. The high-z sample contains more systems with high TsT_s values, 1000\gtrsim 1000 K. The TsT_s distributions in DLAs and the Galaxy are also clearly (~6σ6\sigma) different, with more high-TsT_s sightlines in DLAs than in the Milky Way. The high TsT_s values in the high-z DLAs of our sample arise due to low fractions of the cold neutral medium. For 29 DLAs with metallicity [Z/H] estimates, we confirm the presence of an anti-correlation between TsT_s and [Z/H], at 3.5σ3.5\sigma significance via a non-parametric Kendall-tau test. This result was obtained with the assumption that the DLA covering factor is equal to the core fraction. Monte Carlo simulations show that the significance of the result is only marginally decreased if the covering factor and the core fraction are uncorrelated, or if there is a random error in the inferred covering factor. We also find evidence for redshift evolution in DLA TsT_s values even for the z>1 sub-sample. Since z>1 DLAs have angular diameter distances comparable to or larger than those of the background quasars, they have similar efficiency in covering the quasars. Low covering factors in high-z DLAs thus cannot account for the observed redshift evolution in spin temperatures. (Abstract abridged.)Comment: 37 pages, 22 figures.     Theory of the optical conductivity of (TMTSF)2_2PF6_6 in the mid-infrared range

    We propose an explanation of the mid-infrared peak observed in the optical conductivity of the Bechgaard salt (TMTSF)2_2PF6_6 in terms of electronic excitations. It is based on a numerical calculation of the conductivity of the quarter-filled, dimerized Hubbard model. The main result is that, even for intermediate values of U/tU/t for which the charge gap is known to be very small, the first peak, and at the same time the main structure, of the optical conductivity is at an energy of the order of the dimerization gap, like in the infinite UU case.     Finite average lengths in critical loop models

    A relation between the average length of loops and their free energy is obtained for a variety of O(n)-type models on two-dimensional lattices, by extending to finite temperatures a calculation due to Kast. We show that the (number) averaged loop length L stays finite for all non-zero fugacities n, and in particular it does not diverge upon entering the critical regime n -> 2+. Fully packed loop (FPL) models with n=2 seem to obey the simple relation L = 3 L_min, where L_min is the smallest loop length allowed by the underlying lattice. We demonstrate this analytically for the FPL model on the honeycomb lattice and for the 4-state Potts model on the square lattice, and based on numerical estimates obtained from a transfer matrix method we conjecture that this is also true for the two-flavour FPL model on the square lattice. We present in addition numerical results for the average loop length on the three critical branches (compact, dense and dilute) of the O(n) model on the honeycomb lattice, and discuss the limit n -> 0. Contact is made with the predictions for the distribution of loop lengths obtained by conformal invariance methods.Comment: 20 pages of LaTeX including 3 figure

    The Z2Z_2 staggered vertex model and its applications

    New solvable vertex models can be easily obtained by staggering the spectral parameter in already known ones. This simple construction reveals some surprises: for appropriate values of the staggering, highly non-trivial continuum limits can be obtained. The simplest case of staggering with period two (the Z2Z_2 case) for the six-vertex model was shown to be related, in one regime of the spectral parameter, to the critical antiferromagnetic Potts model on the square lattice, and has a non-compact continuum limit. Here, we study the other regime: in the very anisotropic limit, it can be viewed as a zig-zag spin chain with spin anisotropy, or as an anyonic chain with a generic (non-integer) number of species. From the Bethe-Ansatz solution, we obtain the central charge c=2c=2, the conformal spectrum, and the continuum partition function, corresponding to one free boson and two Majorana fermions. Finally, we obtain a massive integrable deformation of the model on the lattice. Interestingly, its scattering theory is a massive version of the one for the flow between minimal models. The corresponding field theory is argued to be a complex version of the C2(2)C_2^{(2)} Toda theory.Comment: 38 pages, 14 figures, 3 appendice
