    On a generalised bootstrap principle

    The S-matrices for non-simply-laced affine Toda field theories are considered in the context of a generalised bootstrap principle. The S-matrices, and in particular their poles, depend on a parameter whose range lies between the Coxeter numbers of dual pairs of the corresponding non-simply-laced algebras. It is proposed that only odd order poles in the physical strip with positive coefficients throughout this range should participate in the bootstrap. All other singularities have an explanation in principle in terms of a generalised Coleman-Thun mechanism.     Phenomenology of a light scalar: the dilaton

    We make use of the language of non-linear realizations to analyze electro-weak symmetry breaking scenarios in which a light dilaton emerges from the breaking of a nearly conformal strong dynamics, and compare the phenomenology of the dilaton to that of the well motivated light composite Higgs scenario. We argue that -- in addition to departures in the decay/production rates into massless gauge bosons mediated by the conformal anomaly -- characterizing features of the light dilaton scenario (as well as other scenarios admitting a light CP-even scalar not directly related to the breaking of the electro-weak symmetry) are off-shell events at high invariant mass involving two longitudinally polarized vector bosons and a dilaton, and tree-level flavor violating processes. Accommodating both electro-weak precision measurements and flavor constraints appears especially challenging in the ambiguous scenario in which the Higgs and the dilaton fields strongly mix. We show that warped higgsless models of electro-weak symmetry breaking are explicit and tractable realizations of this limiting case. The relation between the naive radion profile often adopted in the study of holographic realizations of the light dilaton scenario and the actual dynamical dilaton field is clarified in the Appendix.Comment: 21 page

    Affine Toda field theory on a half line

    The question of the integrability of real-coupling affine toda field theory on a half-line is addressed. It is found, by examining low-spin conserved charges, that the boundary conditions preserving integrability are strongly constrained. In particular, for the an (n>1)a_n\ (n>1) series of models there can be no free parameters introduced by the boundary condition; indeed the only remaining freedom (apart from choosing the simple condition 1ϕ=0\partial_1\phi =0), resides in a choice of signs. For a special case of the boundary condition, it is argued that the classical boundary bound state spectrum is closely related to a consistent set of reflection factors in the quantum field theory.Comment: 16 pages, TEX (harvmac), DTP-94/7, YITP/U-94-1

    In pursuit of innocence: A study of race and ethnicity differences in time to exoneration.

    Wrongful convictions take years from an individual’s life, rob them of the comfort and presence of their family, rip them from their place in the community, and subject them to the harsh pains of imprisonment. Exonerees can spend years and even decades in the pursuit of proving innocence and obtaining an exoneration. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of race and ethnicity upon time-to-exoneration through the lens of focal concerns theory. Focal concerns theory has been used to demonstrate that criminal justice actors are influenced by legal and extralegal factors in decision making and rely on stereotypes to assess blameworthiness, protection of the community, and in navigating practical constraints and consequences. Utilizing data obtained from the National Registry of Exonerations (N =507) survival analysis was performed. The findings indicate that black exonerees experienced a longer time-to-exoneration than did white exonerees and that Hispanic exonerees experienced the shortest time-to-exoneration of all. The legal components of a case were found to affect time-to-exoneration. The impact of these factors affected the racial and ethnic groups differently, resulting in detrimental impact to minorities. The findings offer support for focal concerns theory in the demonstration that racial and ethnic differences are present in time to exoneration resulting in disparities which disadvantage minorities. Further support for focal concerns theory is found in that the legal components of a case are shown to be associated with racial and ethnic differences in time-to-exoneration

    An empirical examination of the presence of minority coaches in minor league baseball

    Three research questions concerning race and the coaching staff were addressed. The first question was to determine the ratio between the race of coaches (White, Black, or Latino) and the race of the players (White, Black, or Latino). The second question was to determine if a disproportionate amount of minorities would be found at any of the three coaching positions (Manager, Hitting Coach, and Pitching Coach). The final question was to determine the coaches defensive position during their playing career, whether it was a central or peripheral position, and their current coaching position (Manager or Hitting Coach) All pitching coaches were assumed to have been a pitcher during their playing career and hence a central position player; After analysis of the data, a significant relationship between the ratio of minority coaches and minority players was found. Also, the defensive positions of coaches during their playing careers were found to be significant with their current coaching position. Finally, black coaches were found to be significant based upon their coaching position. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

    Root Systems and Purely Elastic S-Matrices II

    Starting from a recently-proposed general formula, various properties of the ADE series of purely elastic S-matrices are rederived in a universal way. In particular, the relationship between the pole structure and the bootstrap equations is shown to follow from properties of root systems. The discussion leads to a formula for the signs of the three-point couplings in the simply-laced affine Toda theories, and a simple proof of a result due to Klassen and Melzer of relevance to Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz calculations.Comment: 21 page

    Exploratory studies of the cruise performance of upper surface blown configurations: Experimental program, high-speed pressure tests

    Basic pressure data are presented which was obtained from an experimental study of upper-surface blown configurations at cruise. The high-speed (subsonic) experimental work, studying the aerodynamic effects of wing-nacelle geometric variations, was conducted around semi-span model configurations composed of diversified, interchangeable components. Power simulation was provided by high-pressure air ducted through closed forebody nacelles. Nozzle geometry was varied across size, exit aspect ratio, exit position and boattail angle. Both 3-D force and 2-D pressure measurements were obtained at cruise Mach numbers from 0.5 to 0.8 and at nozzle pressure ratios up to about 3.0. The experimental investigation was supported by an analytical synthesis of the system using a vortex lattice representation with first-order power effects. Results are also presented from a compatibility study in which a short-haul transport is designed on the basis of the aerodynamic findings in the experimental study as well as acoustical data obtained in a concurrent program. High-lift test data are used to substantiate the projected performance of the selected transport design
