    Watershed services of smallholder agriculture in the Eastern Amazon.

    Abstract: Several hydrobiogeochemical research activities have been conducted in the Eastern Amazon, contributing to the understanding of how changes in forests and agro-ecosystems affect ecosystem service provision. Findings have demonstrate that good agricultural practices and the presence of natural secondary vegetation favored by smallholder farm management are important factors for hydrobiogeochemical cycling, aquatic ecosystem conservation, soil conservation, and mitigation of trace emissions from biomass burning in Amazonian small catchments. Two challenges for watershed service management arise in this context. First, low population densities and the relatively flat landscape mean that a critical mass of downstream beneficiaries of such services - a prerequisite for public intervention - is more difficult to identify than in more densely populated mountainous areas. Second, although watershed service providers (farmers) are also to considerable extent service beneficiaries, conflicts over land and cultural heterogeneities among settlers inhibit local collective action to safeguard stream water quality. Including smallholders in carbon payment schemes that and other alternatives to slash-and-burn agriculture by compensating farmers for additional watershed services, including forest conservation. The development of payments for watershed services schemes currently hinges on a better understanding of the biophysical determinants of hydrological service provision, especially in the Amazon region

    Significance of DSMC Computed Aerothermal Environments in the Rarefied Regime for Atmospheric Entry Material Response

    During Mars atmospheric entry, the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) was protected by a 4.5 meters diameter ablative heatshield assembled in 113 tiles. The heatshield was made of NASA's flagship ablative material, the Phenolic Impregnated Carbon Ablator (PICA). Prior work compared the traditional one-dimensional and three-dimensional material response models at different locations in the heatshield. It was observed that the flow was basically one-dimensional in the nose and flank regions, but three-dimensional flow effects were observed in the outer flank. The objective of this work is to study the effects of the aerothermal environment on the material response. We extend prior work by computing aerothermal environments using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) code SPARTA and the CFD code Data Parallel Line Relaxation (DPLR). SPARTA is used to compute environment in the rarefied regime prior to 48.4s of entry where the Knudsen number is such that the Navier-Stokes equations can be inaccurate. Similarly to previous work, the DPLR software is used to compute the hypersonic environment for laminar then turbulent boundary layer assumptions from 48.4 s up to 100 s after Entry Interface (EI) along the MSL 08-TPS-02/01a trajectory. We observe that extending the aerothermal environments to times prior to 48.4 s modifies the thermal response of the heat shield at the surface and in-depth; however the effects on the recession are minimal. Additionally, using the assumption of a turbulent boundary layer versus a laminar one leads to higher surface and in-depth temperatures, larger recession, and a displacement of the peak heating and peak recession location

    Activity of raltitrexed and gemcitabine in advanced pancreatic cancer

    Background: Gemcitabine has evolved as standard therapy in advanced pancreatic cancer since the demonstration of a significant clinical benefit. Phase II trials have shown that gemcitabine can be successfully combined with thymidylate synthase (TS) inhibitors such as continuous-infusion 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). However, continuous-infusion 5-FU is inconvenient because of the need for a central venous access. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of gemcitabine in combination with raltitrexed (Tomudex), a novel and selective TS inhibitor that has the advantage of a 3-weekly treatment interval and manageable toxicity. Patients and methods: Chemotherapy-naïve patients with measurable advanced pancreatic cancer were treated with raltitrexed 3 mg/m2 as a 15-min infusion on day 1 and gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 on days 1 and 8, every 21 days. Results: Twenty-five eligible patients (17 male, eight female) with metastatic (21 patients) or locally advanced (four patients) disease entered the study. The median number of courses per patient was four (range 1-14). One patient was not evaluable for response. There were three partial remissions [12%; 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.6% to 31.2%] and nine stable disease situations (36%; 95% CI 18.0% to 57.5%), while the tumours of 12 patients (48%; 95% CI 27.8% to 68.7%) showed progressive disease after three treatment cycles. WHO grade 3/4 toxicity was rare and symptomatic in only one patient, who experienced grade 4 diarrhoea and grade 3 nausea and vomiting. Symptomatic benefit was seen in 12 patients. Median survival was 185 days (95% CI 129-241) with six patients still alive. Conclusions: The efficacy of raltitrexed plus gemcitabine is limited, but compares well with other chemotherapy treatment options in advanced pancreatic cancer. However, this combination is convenient and symptomatic toxicity is rare. Thus, raltitrexed and gemcitabine should be investigated further in combination with drugs interfering with specific molecular target

    De Sitter space and perpetuum mobile

    We give general arguments that any interacting non--conformal {\it classical} field theory in de Sitter space leads to the possibility of constructing a perpetuum mobile. The arguments are based on the observation that massive free falling particles can radiate other massive particles on the classical level as seen by the free falling observer. The intensity of the radiation process is non-zero even for particles with any finite mass, i.e. with a wavelength which is within the causal domain.     Physics of Interpulse Emission in Radio Pulsars

    The magnetized induced Compton scattering off the particles of the ultrarelativistic electron-positron plasma of pulsar is considered. The main attention is paid to the transverse regime of the scattering, which holds in a moderately strong magnetic field. We specifically examine the problem on induced transverse scattering of the radio beam into the background, which takes place in the open field line tube of a pulsar. In this case, the radiation is predominantly scattered backwards and the scattered component may grow considerably. Based on this effect, we for the first time suggest a physical explanation of the interpulse emission observed in the profiles of some pulsars. Our model can naturally account for the peculiar spectral and polarization properties of the interpulses. Furthermore, it implies a specific connection of the interpulse to the main pulse, which may reveal itself in the consistent intensity fluctuations of the components at different timescales. Diverse observational manifestations of this connection, including the moding behavior of PSR B1822-09, the peculiar temporal and frequency structure of the giant interpulses in the Crab pulsar, and the intrinsic phase correspondence of the subpulse patterns in the main pulse and the interpulse of PSR B1702-19, are discussed in detail. It is also argued that the pulse-to-pulse fluctuations of the scattering efficiency may lead to strong variability of the interpulse, which is yet to be studied observationally.     Friedmann cosmology with a generalized equation of state and bulk viscosity

    The universe media is considered as a non-perfect fluid with bulk viscosity and described by a more general equation of state. We assume the bulk viscosity is a linear combination of the two terms: one is constant, and the other is proportional to the scalar expansion θ=3a˙/a\theta=3\dot{a}/a. The equation of state is described as p=(γ1)ρ+p0p=(\gamma-1)\rho+p_0, where p0p_0 is a parameter. This model can be used to explain the dark energy dominated universe. Different choices of the parameters may lead to three kinds of fates of the cosmological evolution: no future singularity, big rip, or Type III singularity of Ref. [S. Nojiri, S.D. Odintsov, and S.     IL-1β and TNFα Differentially Influence NF-κB Activity and FasL-Induced Apoptosis in Primary Murine Hepatocytes During LPS-Induced Inflammation

    Macrophage-derived cytokines largely influence the behavior of hepatocytes during an inflammatory response. We previously reported that both TNFα and IL-1β, which are released by macrophages upon LPS stimulation, affect Fas ligand (FasL)-induced apoptotic signaling. Whereas TNFα preincubation leads to elevated levels of caspase-3 activity and cell death, pretreatment with IL-1β induces increased caspase-3 activity but keeps cells alive. We now report that IL-1β and TNFα differentially influence NF-κB activity resulting in a differential upregulation of target genes, which may contribute to the distinct effects on cell viability. A reduced NF-κB activation model was established to further investigate the molecular mechanisms which determine the distinct cell fate decisions after IL-1β and TNFα stimulation. To study this aspect in a more physiological setting, we used supernatants from LPS-stimulated bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs). The treatment of hepatocytes with the BMDM supernatant, which contains both IL-1β and TNFα, sensitized to FasL-induced caspase-3 activation and cell death. However, when TNFα action was blocked by neutralizing antibodies, cell viability after stimulation with the BMDM supernatant and FasL increased as compared to single FasL stimulation. This indicates the important role of TNFα in the sensitization of apoptosis in hepatocytes. These results give first insights into the complex interplay between macrophages and hepatocytes which may influence life/death decisions of hepatocytes during an inflammatory reaction of the liver in response to a bacterial infection
