    Randomised Control Trial Comparing Cypermethrin-Based Preparations in the Prevention of Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis in Cattle

    Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) caused by Moraxella bovis is commonly seen in the summer months spread by face flies. This trial investigated the difference in incidence of IBK cases from natural exposure between two groups of animals, one treated with Cypermethrin pour-on preparation (PON, n = 98) and one with Cypermethrin impregnated ear tags (TAG, n = 99). Daily Live Weight Gain (DLWG) difference was investigated between animals with cases and those without and between treatment groups. A randomised positive control study, enrolled 197 animals split into two treatment groups. Cases of IBK and DLWG were recorded over the grazing season (April–November 2018). Fifty-four cases of IBK were recorded. There was no association between the two treatment groups (p = 0.362) and case status. Breed and under 12 months old were significant factors for having a case; (OR 2.3, p = 0.014 and OR 3.5, p < 0.001 respectively). There was no difference in DLWG between animals that had a case and animals that had not (p = 0.739) or between the two treatment groups (p = 0.215). Based on our results, there is no significant difference between PON or TAG preparations in the prevention of IBK.     Vanaf 2005 zijn in Nederland foerageergebieden aangewezen waarin ganzen worden geconcentreerd teneinde schade aan landbouwgewassen buiten deze gebieden te verminderen. Binnen de foerageergebieden wordt zo veel mogelijk rust en voldoende voedsel aangeboden, buiten deze gebieden worden ganzen verjaagd, al dan niet ondersteund door afschot. De randen van de aangewezen foerageergebieden zijn soms grillig en rafelig, en binnen de aangewezen foerageergebieden kunnen enclaves voorkomen omdat individuele boeren niet meedoen aan de regeling. Dit leidt mogelijk tot een niet optimaal gebruik van de foerageergebieden door ganzen. Daarom is de opvangcapaciteit in relatie tot de grootte, de vorm en de ligging van de foerageergebieden onderzocht

    Supercurrent in Nb/InAs-Nanowire/Nb Josephson junctions

    We report on the fabrication and measurements of planar mesoscopic Josephson junctions formed by InAs nanowires coupled to superconducting Nb terminals. The use of Si-doped InAs-nanowires with different bulk carrier concentrations allowed to tune the properties of the junctions. We have studied the junction characteristics as a function of temperature, gate voltage, and magnetic field. In junctions with high doping concentrations in the nanowire Josephson supercurrent values up to 100\,nA are found. Owing to the use of Nb as superconductor the Josephson coupling persists at temperatures up to 4K. In all junctions the critical current monotonously decreased with the magnetic field, which can be explained by a recently developed theoretical model for the proximity effect in ultra-small Josephson junctions. For the low-doped Josephson junctions a control of the critical current by varying the gate voltage has been demonstrated. We have studied conductance fluctuations in nanowires coupled to superconducting and normal metal terminals. The conductance fluctuation amplitude is found to be about 6 times larger in superconducting contacted nanowires. The enhancement of the conductance fluctuations is attributed to phase-coherent Andreev reflection as well as to the large number of phase-coherent channels due to the large superconducting gap of the Nb electrodes.Comment: 5 Figure, submitted to Journal of Applied Physic

    Effect of tuberculin skin testing on serological results against Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP): Evidence of distinct effects in MAP-infected and noninfected cows

    Johne's disease and bovine tuberculosis are diseases of economic, public health, and animal welfare importance. The single intradermal cervical comparative tuberculin (SICCT) test, which is used to determine bovine tuberculosis status as part of eradication schemes in the United Kingdom and some other countries, has been reported to interfere with the results of the widely used ELISA to detect antibodies against Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP) in milk. Better understanding of the relationship between SICCT and MAP tests can improve management and control of Johne's disease. The aim of this study was to characterize the relationship between SICCT testing and milk ELISA performance and to assess whether the immunological response to the SICCT test is different for MAP-infected cows and noninfected cows. We used repeated MAP milk ELISA test results of a cohort of 805,561 cows in the United Kingdom between 2010 and 2018 that had milk ELISA tests within 90 d of SICCT testing to identify cows likely to be infected. We then assessed, separately, for cows deemed to be MAP-infected and noninfected, the association between MAP test results and proximity to SICCT testing by means of survival analysis and generalized additive mixed models. The results were used to quantify the effect SICCT testing may have on performance of milk ELISA tests conducted soon after SICCT testing. At high prevalence levels (20%) of MAP in the infected herd, overall accuracy of the milk ELISA is not reduced when testing occurs within 14 d from SICCT testing. Milk ELISA values of cows deemed to be infected were highest when MAP testing was closer in time to SICCT testing, suggesting the SICCT test enhances antibody response for MAP in infected cows. This corresponds to higher sensitivity of the MAP milk ELISA when testing within 30 d of the SICCT test. For cows deemed to be noninfected, the effect of previous SICCT testing was delayed compared with infected cows, with MAP milk ELISA values peaking at around 15 d post-SICCT testing. For both, MAP-infected and noninfected cows, interference from SICCT test diminished 30 d after SICCT testing, suggesting post 30 d to be the most appropriate time for evaluating the milk ELISA for MAP after SICCT testing. Our results provide strong evidence that the effect of the SICCT test on serological response against MAP is different for MAP-infected versus noninfected cows and that, as a result of this distinct effect, it is possible to improve interpretation of MAP milk ELISA test results (higher accuracy) by taking into consideration time since SICCT testing

    Computing the shortest elementary flux modes in genome-scale metabolic networks

Copyright @ The Author 2009.Motivation: Elementary flux modes (EFMs) represent a key concept to analyze metabolic networks from a pathway-oriented perspective. In spite of considerable work in this field, the computation of the full set of elementary flux modes in large-scale metabolic networks still constitutes a challenging issue due to its underlying combinatorial complexity. Results: In this article, we illustrate that the full set of EFMs can be enumerated in increasing order of number of reactions via integer linear programming. In this light, we present a novel procedure to efficiently determine the K-shortest EFMs in large-scale metabolic networks. Our method was applied to find the K-shortest EFMs that produce lysine in the genome-scale metabolic networks of Escherichia coli and Corynebacterium glutamicum. A detailed analysis of the biological significance of the K-shortest EFMs was conducted, finding that glucose catabolism, ammonium assimilation, lysine anabolism and cofactor balancing were correctly predicted. The work presented here represents an important step forward in the analysis and computation of EFMs for large-scale metabolic networks, where traditional methods fail for networks of even moderate size.
