Colony Defense Behavior of the Primitively Eusocial Wasp, Mischocyttarus cerberus is Related to Age

Get PDF
The colony defense behavior of the wasp Mischocyttarus cerberus Richards (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) was studied to verify whether there were different reactions of wasps of different ages and hierarchical positions during attacks of ants. Detailed nest mapping was first performed, then the wasps were marked and were divided in four distinct categories: queens, older workers, younger workers and males. Tests were made simulating attacks of ants in the nests. The main results showed that the M. cerberus behaviors against ant attacks is more related to the age of the wasps than to their hierarchical position. The oldest wasps (queens and older workers) defend the nest more than the younger workers and males, representing a form of temporal polyethism

Interface between Intellectual Disability and Mental Health: hermeneutic review

Get PDF
A literature review was conducted aiming to understand the interface between the Intellectual Disability and Mental Health fields and to contribute to mitigating the path of institutionalizing individuals with intellectual deficiencies. The so-called dual diagnosis phenomenon remains underestimated in Brazil but is the object of research and specific public policy internationally. This phenomenon alerts us to the prevalence of mental health problems in those with intellectual disabilities, limiting their social inclusion. The findings reinforce the importance of this theme and indicate possible diagnostic invisibility of the development of mental illness in those with intellectual disabilities in Brazil, which may contribute to sustaining psychiatric institutionalization of this population.

Odour masking of tomato volatiles by coriander volatiles in host plant selection of Bemisia tabaci biotype B.

The silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is one of the most important pest insects in tomato crop systems worldwide. It has been previously demonstrated that intercropping tomato [Solanum lycopersicum L. Mill. (Solanaceae)] with coriander [Coriandrum sativum L. (Apiaceae)] reduces the incidence and severity of damage caused by B. tabaci. However, it is not yet known how coriander affects the insect?s behaviour. We evaluated the attractiveness of tomato constitutive volatiles to B. tabaci and what effect coriander constitutive volatiles have on the insect?s behaviour. To this end, we conducted three bioassays in a multiple-choice four-arm olfactometer (?×? type), measuring B. tabaci behaviour when offered tomato and coriander constitutive volatiles presented alone as well as together. We also evaluated the colonisation and establishment of B. tabaci in experimental plots with only single tomato plants and tomatoes intercropped with coriander in a greenhouse. Bemisia tabaci males and females recognised tomato constitutive volatiles as a positive stimulus (kairomonal effect), indicating that semiochemicals from this plant can play an important role in the insect?s host plant selection. Coriander constitutive volatiles reduced the attractiveness of tomato volatiles but no repellency to these volatiles was observed. Greater numbers of adults and nymphs of B. tabaci per plant were observed in tomato monoculture plots than in tomato intercropped with coriander. We suggest that coriander constitutive volatiles have an odour masking effect on tomato volatiles, thus interfering in the host plant selection of B. tabaci

Soothing and anti-itch effect of quercetin phytosome in human subjects: A single-blind study

Background: We evaluated the ability of quercetin, a natural antioxidant formulated in a specific delivery system, to reduce skin inflammation induced by a variety of stimuli, including UV radiation, stimulation with a histamine solution, or contact with chemical irritants. In particular, we tested the soothing and anti-itch effect of Quercevita\uc2\uae, 1% cream for external use, a formulation characterized by a phospholipids-based delivery system. Patients and methods: The study was a monocentric, single blind trial that enrolled a group of 30 healthy volunteers. The back of each subject was examined to identify four quadrants with no previous skin damage or naevi that were treated in order to induce a controlled and reversible form of skin stress. The areas were treated as follows: no product; Quercevita\uc2\uae 1% cream, 2 mg/cm2; placebo; positive control (a commercially available topical formulation containing 1% dexchlorpheniramine). Results: Only quercetin phospholipids 1% and dexchlorpheniramine 1% achieved a significant reduction in erythema with comparable results: (\ue2\u80錐.05% [P=0.00329] for quercetin phospholipids 1% vs \ue2\u80錔.05% [P=0.00046] for the positive control). Moreover, quercetin phospholipids 1% and dexchlorpheniramine 1% were both associated with a significant decrease in mean wheal diameter: (\ue2\u80錓.25% and \ue2\u80錒.23% for dexchlorpheniramine 1%, respectively). Similar findings were reported for the other tested parameters. Conclusion: Quercetin has a skin protective effect against damage caused by a variety of insults, including UV radiation, histamine, or contact with toxic chemical compounds. Indeed, quercetin is able to reduce redness, itching, and inflammation of damaged skin; it may also help restore skin barrier function, increasing hydration, and reducing water loss

Occupational therapy, work and intellectual disabilities: subsidies for acting in the Unified System of Social Assistance

Introduction: This essay questions the social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities, considering the specificities of their social representation. It identifies the constitution of work as a privileged human activity in industrial societies, crossing the different conceptions and concerns in the scope of the construction of knowledge and practices in occupational therapy. Objective: To develop a critical reflection on the potential of occupational therapists in the processes of social inclusion of people with intellectual disability through work, within the scope of the Unified System of Social Assistance. Method: The reflective process was based on a brief review of the state of the art on national productions dealing with the social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities through work, as well as the interface between Occupational Therapy, Work and Intellectual Disability. It highlights the importance of the expansion of actions to be developed in the context of the Public Policy of Social Assistance. Results: The lack of inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in the work environment is an evidence of an important axis to guide the actions needed to interfere with the pathological and institutionalizing fate, still hegemonic to the population in question. Conclusion: Contributions to occupational therapy practices are presented to people with intellectual disabilities, especially in the context of the Public Social Assistance Policy in Brazil.Univ Fed Sao Paulo UNIFESP, Dept Polit Publ & Saude Colet, Santos, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo UNIFESP, Dept Polit Publ & Saude Colet, Santos, SP, BrazilWeb of Scienc
