    A Spectrally efficient PMR System Utilizing Broadcast Service

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Different trunked Private Mobile Radio (PMR) systems have been designed over the last several decades, all of which have symmetric downlink and uplink channel capacities. Due to this symmetry, these systems may not be spectrally efficient in case of different types of services, which are specific to PMR systems, such as group and broadcast calls. In this study, a new asymmetric trunked PMR system comprising a broadband, wide-area downlink and a narrowband cellular uplink, is proposed to achieve a higher spectral efficiency than current digital trunked PMR systems. This system is spectrally more efficient because in group and broadcast calls only a single downlink channel has to be allocated in the downlink part. However, as the number of clusters in the system increases, this advantage relative to PMR systems is lost, since the latter can employ frequency reuse. Spectral efficiency of the proposed asymmetric system (a-PMR) system and a standard TETRA system are compared using numerical case studies against different traffic loads and number of clusters. The optimum point, with respect to number of clusters, up to which the proposed a-PMR system is more efficient, is determined. It is shown that a very large PMR user population can be efficiently served using the proposed a-PMR system. The issues related to implementing such a system are discussed

    Toward improved statistical methods for analyzing Cotinine-Biomarker health association data

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Serum cotinine, a metabolite of nicotine, is frequently used in research as a biomarker of recent tobacco smoke exposure. Historically, secondhand smoke (SHS) research uses suboptimal statistical methods due to censored serum cotinine values, meaning a measurement below the limit of detection (LOD).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We compared commonly used methods for analyzing censored serum cotinine data using parametric and non-parametric techniques employing data from the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). To illustrate the differences in associations obtained by various analytic methods, we compared parameter estimates for the association between cotinine and the inflammatory marker homocysteine using complete case analysis, single and multiple imputation, "reverse" Kaplan-Meier, and logistic regression models.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Parameter estimates and statistical significance varied according to the statistical method used with censored serum cotinine values. Single imputation of censored values with either 0, LOD or LOD/√2 yielded similar estimates and significance; multiple imputation method yielded smaller estimates than the other methods and without statistical significance. Multiple regression modelling using the "reverse" Kaplan-Meier method yielded statistically significant estimates that were larger than those from parametric methods.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Analyses of serum cotinine data with values below the LOD require special attention. "Reverse" Kaplan-Meier was the only method inherently able to deal with censored data with multiple LODs, and may be the most accurate since it avoids data manipulation needed for use with other commonly used statistical methods. Additional research is needed into the identification of optimal statistical methods for analysis of SHS biomarkers subject to a LOD.</p

    Sociodemographic Correlates of Bariatric Surgery by Procedure Type among a Statewide Ethnically Diverse Patient Population

    Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) 2013 inpatient data was used to conduct a retrospective review using International Classification of Diseases 9th edition (ICD-9) procedure codes to examine the sociodemographic correlates of three bariatric procedures [Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB), Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB), and Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG)]. Race-ethnic groups included non-Hispanic white (NHW), non- Hispanic black (NHB), Hispanic, and other. The sample (n=6,424, mean age 46 years) was predominantly NHW (57.4%), female (74.9%), commercial-insurance carriers (51.2%), and severely obese (98.8%). SG was the most common procedure (57.9%) followed by RYGB (39.3%), and LAGB (2.8%). Regardless of bariatric procedure type, over 40% were covered by commercial insurance. The relationship between insurance status and bariatric procedure type was statistically significant (p\u3c0.01). However, race-ethnicity and bariatric procedure relationship was not significant after adjusting for age, sex, and insurance status. Despite the current high obesity frequencies across all demographics in the state of Florida, NHW women (compared to their sex-ethnic-specific counterparts) in our sample received the highest proportion of bariatric surgeries. Further research should examine why this finding continues despite obesity and its health-related consequences affecting all sex- ethnic groups

    Capacity analysis of a PMR system with DAB downlink

    Several trunked private mobile radio (PMR) systems have been designed over the last decade, most of which have symmetric downlink and uplink channel capacities. These systems may not be spectrally efficient in case of group or broadcast-based voice and data calls, a common feature of PMR systems. We propose a new asymmetric PMR system comprising a wideband OFDM-based downlink and a narrowband uplink, which not only achieves a better spectral efficiency but also can support high bit rate multimedia applications. The system is shown to have high trunking efficiency since all users are assumed to use the pool of channels available in the wideband downlink. In this paper, we study the performance and capacity of a private mobile radio system using a digital audio broadcasting (DAB) downlink. In particular, we study the efficiency of such a system for voice calls using voice activity detection and statistical multiplexing. Moreover, we show that, the efficiency of the system can significantly increase, if the incoming calls, which can not find an available channel, are allowed to wait a certain amount of time before occupying a channel. © 2003 IEEE

    A sinkhole resilient protocol for wireless sensor networks: Performance and security analysis

    International audienceThis work focuses on: (1) understanding the impact of selective forwarding attacks on tree-based routing topologies in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), and (2) investigating cryptography-based strategies to limit network degradation caused by sinkhole attacks. The main motivation of our research stems from the following observations. First, WSN protocols that construct a fixed routing topology may be significantly affected by malicious attacks. Second, considering networks deployed in a difficult to access geographical region, building up resilience against such attacks rather than detection is expected to be more beneficial. We thus first provide a simulation study on the impact of malicious attacks based on a diverse set of parameters, such as the network scale and the position and number of malicious nodes. Based on this study, we propose a single but very representative metric for describing this impact. Second, we present the novel design and evaluation of two simple and resilient topology-based reconfiguration protocols that broadcast cryptographic values. The results of our simulation study together with a detailed analysis of the cryptographic overhead (communication, memory, and computational costs) show that our reconfiguration protocols are practical and effective in improving resilience against sinkhole attacks, even in the presence of collusion

    Search for low-mass WIMPs in a 0.6 kg day exposure of the DAMIC experiment at SNOLAB

    We present results of a dark matter search performed with a 0.6 kg day exposure of the DAMIC experiment at the SNOLAB underground laboratory. We measure the energy spectrum of ionization events in the bulk silicon of charge-coupled devices down to a signal of 60 eV electron equivalent. The data are consistent with radiogenic backgrounds, and constraints on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic-scattering cross section are accordingly placed. A region of parameter space relevant to the potential signal from the CDMS-II Si experiment is excluded using the same target for the first time. This result obtained with a limited exposure demonstrates the potential to explore the low-mass WIMP region (<10 GeV/c2c^{2}) of the upcoming DAMIC100, a 100 g detector currently being installed in SNOLAB.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure
