    The "UV-route" to search for Blue Straggler Stars in Globular Clusters: first results from the HST UV Legacy Survey

    We used data from the HST UV Legacy Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters to select the Blue Straggler Star (BSS) population in four intermediate/high density systems (namely NGC 2808, NGC 6388, NGC 6541 and NGC 7078) through a "UV-guided search". This procedure consists in using the F275W images in each cluster to construct the master list of detected sources, and then force it to the images acquired in the other filters. Such an approach optimizes the detection of relatively hot stars and allows the detection of complete sample of BSSs even in the central region of high-density clusters, because the light from the bright cool giants, which dominates the optical emission in old stellar systems, is sensibly reduced at UV wavelengths. Our UV-guided selections of BSSs have been compared to the samples obtained in previous, optical-driven surveys, clearly demonstrating the efficiency of the UV approach. In each cluster we also measured the parameter A+, defined as the area enclosed between the cumulative radial distribution of BSSs and that of a reference population, which traces the level of BSS central segregation and the level of dynamical evolution suffered by the system.     Pulsed electric fields as a green technology for the extraction of bioactive compounds from thinned peach by-products

    Thinned fruits are agricultural by-products which nowadays have few economic or environmental benefits. However, previous studies have revealed that these immature fruits have a large amount of antioxidant compounds. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether pulsed electric fields (PEF) might be a suitable green technology for enhancing the extraction of phenols, flavonoids and antioxidant compounds from fresh thinned peaches, thus reducing the use of methanol. Moreover, response surface methodology has been used to determine the optimal PEF treatment conditions, observing that the solvent is the main factor. The highest amounts of bioactive compounds were extracted using 80% methanol and no PEF. Methanol combined with PEF produced a negative effect on the extraction yield. However, the use of water as a solvent increased the amount of total bioactive compounds and individual phenols (chlorogenic acid, coumaric acid and neochlorogenic acid). Thus, PEF-assisted extraction of bioactive compounds from thinned peach fruits using water as a solvent is an alternative to conventional extraction methods which require dried products, large amounts of organic solvents and long extraction times

    En esta nota se informa sobre la presencia del estoma­tópodo Parasquilla ferussaci en las costas de la península ibérica. La documentación está basada en tres especímenes capturados, respectivamente, en Isla Cristina (Huelva) en el Golfo de Cádiz, Fuengirola (Málaga) en el Mar de Alborán y en Gavà (Barcelona) en el Me­diterráneo noroccidental. Se amplia la distribución conocida de la especie completando así el vacío existente hasta el momento entre las citas atlánticas y las del Mediterráneo central. Palabras clave: Parasquilla ferussaci, Estomatópodo, Mediterráneo occidental, Golfo de Cádiz.We report the occurrence of the little known stomatopod Parasquilla ferussaci on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts of the Iberian peninsula. Documentation is based on three specimens captured off Isla Cristina (Huelva) in the Gulf of Cadiz, off Fuengirola (Málaga) in the Alboran Sea and off Gavà (Barcelona) in the North-Western Mediterranean. These reports fill the distribution gap between Eastern Central Atlantic reports and previous Mediterranean reports east of the Balearic Islands.     Extended Parental Care in the Freshwater Shrimp Genus Dugastella Bouvier, 1912 (Decapoda, Atyidae, Paratyinae)

    5 páginas, 1 figura.Parental care and extended parental care are known behaviours in decapod crustaceans (see Thiel, 2000, 2003). While parental care before hatching, which involves incubation of the eggs (carrying, cleaning, and aeration) by females, is a common behaviour in the majority of decapod taxa (with the exception of Dendrobranchiata), extended parental care is a rare behaviour in decapods, restricted only to some species of brachyuran crabs (Diesel, 1989, 1992, 1997; Diesel & Horst, 1995; Ng & Tan, 1995), hermit crabs (Hazlett, 1983; López Greco et al., 2004; Calado et al., 2006), astacid crayfishes (Johnston & Fiegel, 1997; Vogt & Tolley, 2004), and caridean shrimps (Duffy, 1996). In the majority of these cases, the parental female presents different types of parental activity towards the offspring after hatching, like habitat control, elimination of predators, or sharing meals. Also, there are some cases in which larvae develop transient structures that allow them to remain fixed to the pleopods of the female abdomen, like in astacids (see Vogt & Tolley, 2004) and several species of the genus Sclerocrangon Sars, 1883 (see Makarov, 1968; Lacoursière-Roussel & Sainte-Marie, 2009). However, the most infrequent cases of extended parental care in decapods are those where females carry their juvenile offspring under their abdomen after the hatched larvae develop there (cf. abdominal brood pouches, or incubation chamber). These cases have only been reported in one species of Brachyura, Tunicotheres moseri (Rathbun, 1918) (see Bolaños et al., 2004), and one caridean, the kangaroo shrimp Dugastella valentina (Ferrer Galdiano, 1924) (see Cuesta et al., 2006). Taking into account this last case, and considering that there are only two species in the genus Dugastella Bouvier, 1912, the objective of the present study was to corroborate whether the other species, D. marocana Bouvier, 1912, also presents the same behaviour.     UV-Heat Treatments for the Control of Foodborne Microbial Pathogens in Chicken Broth

    This investigation established the process criteria for using UV-C light and mild heat (UV-H treatment) to inactivate 5-Log10 cycles (performance criterion) of common foodborne pathogen populations, Escherichia coli, Salmonella Typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus, when inoculated in chicken broth. To define the target microorganism and the proper UV-H treatment conditions (including UV dose, treatment time, and temperature) that would achieve the stated performance criterion, mathematical equations based on Geeraerd''s model were developed for each microorganism. For the sake of comparison, inactivation equations for heat treatments were also performed on the same chicken broth and for the same microorganisms. L. monocytogenes was the most UV-H resistant microorganism at all temperatures, requiring a UV dose between 6.10 J/mL (5.6 min) and 2.26 J/mL (2.09 min) to achieve 5-Log10 reductions. In comparison with UV treatments at room temperatures, the combination of UV and mild heat allowed both the UV dose and treatment time to be reduced by 30% and 63% at 55°C and 60°C, respectively. Compared to heat treatments, the UV-H process reduced the heating time for 5-Log10 reductions of all the investigated microorganisms in chicken broth from 20-fold to 2-fold when the operating temperature varied from 53 to 60°C

    A study on the decapod assemblage inhabiting a shallow meadow of Cymodocea nodosa from the bay of La Goulette (Tunisia) was carried from February 2009 to February 2010. Monthly samples (with replicates) were taken in the morning and at night, with a small Agassiz trawl. In total 11699 specimens belonging to 41 species were caught. Significant day-night and seasonal changes are mainly related to movements (feeding) and recruitments. Higher abundance and richness were reported at night. Analyses rendered no significant relationships between the plant phenology and abundances and richness; neither between the total abundance and temperature, but significant correlations with a time lag of 3 - 4 months between these factors exist, which could be related with hatching and larval development period. The nocturnal and diurnal values in the diversity and equitability indexes are quite similar along the year (peaks in spring - early summer, minimum in autumn - early winter). This pattern is mainly due to the strong dominance of a few species, with maximum abundances during their recruitment events, whose seasonal and day-night changes have been determined. Besides, an overview of the decapods assemblage associated to this seagrass for the Mediterranean Sea has been carried out. The species can be divided into two groups (linked to the leaves and to the sediment). The differences in species composition between areas must be related to different sampling methodologies, feeding and reproductive strategies, but also to the layout and influence of the surrounding habitats

    Study of hermit crabs from Alboran Sea has allowed recognition of two different morphological forms under what had been understood as Pagurus forbesii. Based on morphological observations with various species of Pagurus, and molecular studies, a new species is described as P. pseudosculptimanus.
