    "If we use the strength of diversity among researchers we can only improve the quality and impact of our research": Issues of equality, diversity, inclusion, and transparency in the process of applying for research funding

    This paper sets out the recommendations that have emerged from a six-month-long exploration and discussion of the processes that take place before research is submitted for funding: the ‘pre-award’ environment. Our work concentrated on how this environment is experienced by researchers at all career stages and from a variety of backgrounds, demographics, and disciplines, as well as by research managers and research support professionals. In the later stages of our exploration, representatives from research funders were also involved in the discussions. The primary component of this project was an analysis of pre-award activities and processes at UK universities, using information collated from workshops with researchers and research management and support staff. The findings of this analysis were presented as a workflow diagram, which was then used to surface issues relating to equality, diversity, inclusion, and transparency in context. The workflow diagram and the issues highlighted by it were used to structure discussions at a symposium for a range of research stakeholders, held in Bristol, UK, in January 2023. The recommendations set out in this paper are drawn from discussions that took place at that event. This paper is not an exhaustive landscape analysis, nor a review of existing research and practice in the area of pre-award processes or of recent thinking on the topics of equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). Instead, it aims to summarise and encapsulate the suggestions put forward by the stakeholders during the symposium. These recommendations, from experienced professionals working in the field, are based on their encounters with the issues raised in the project. They do not solely relate to those working on pre-award processes, but may also apply to funders, policymakers, university leaders, and professional associations, since many of the challenges flagged in our research are systemic and cultural, and reach far beyond the research office

    Visual attention and action: How cueing, direct mapping, and social interactions drive orienting

    Despite considerable interest in both action perception and social attention over the last 2 decades, there has been surprisingly little investigation concerning how the manual actions of other humans orient visual attention. The present review draws together studies that have measured the orienting of attention, following observation of another’s goal-directed action. Our review proposes that, in line with the literature on eye gaze, action is a particularly strong orienting cue for the visual system. However, we additionally suggest that action may orient visual attention using mechanisms, which gaze direction does not (i.e., neural direct mapping and corepresentation). Finally, we review the implications of these gaze-independent mechanisms for the study of attention to action. We suggest that our understanding of attention to action may benefit from being studied in the context of joint action paradigms, where the role of higher level action goals and social factors can be investigated

    Responding to social and symbolic extrafoveal cues: Cue shape trumps biological relevance

    Social cues presented at visual fixation have been shown to strongly influence an observer’s attention and response selection. Here we ask whether the same holds for cues (initially) presented away from fixation, more alike how cues are commonly perceived in natural vision. In six experiments, we show that extrafoveally presented cues with a distinct outline, such as pointing hands, rotated heads, and arrow cues result in strong cueing of responses (either to the cue itself, or a cued object). In contrast, cues without a clear outline, such as gazing eyes and direction words have a much weaker effects on participants’ responses to a target cue. We also show that distraction effects on response times are relatively weak, but that strong interference effects can be obtained by measuring mouse trajectories. Eye tracking suggests that gaze cues are slower to respond to because their direction cannot easily be perceived in extrafoveal vision. Together these data suggest that the strength of an extrafoveal cue is determined by the shape of the outline of the cue, rather than its biological relevance (i.e., whether the cue is provided by another human being), and that this shape effect is due to how easily the direction of the cue can be perceived in extrafoveal vision

    Witnessing meaningful interpersonal encounters facilitates the perception of social emotions

    Judging the emotional states of others based on visual information alone is a fundamental aspect of rapid impression formation. However, it remains unclear whether complex social emotions (such as feelings of pride or envy) can be inferred by merely observing others. Here we demonstrate consistent perception of such complex social emotions when a person is seen in the context of a meaningful interpersonal encounter. In Study 1, we show that the perception of social emotions is enhanced when emotionally expressive target individuals are seen with meaningful social companions rather than with social distractors or in isolation. In Study 2, we illustrate that the perception of social emotions increases systematically when formerly isolated individuals are subsequently seen with meaningful social companions rather than with social distractors or objects. We conclude that interpersonal encounters play an integral part in the perception of social emotions

    Tijdens enkele veldbezoeken van enkele leden van het projectteam en ROB-ers werden op de bodem van een kleigroeve langs de Maas bij Oeffelt, vondsten en sporen aangetroffen uit de prehistorie. De locatie behoort niet tot de Maaswerken-plangebieden, maar omdat de landschappelijke en archeologische situatie kenmerkend was voor de Maaswerken-plangebieden werd door het projectteam archeologie voorgesteld om de groeve aan een nader onderzoek te onderwerpen. Dit hield in de eerste plaats een profielregistratie en slijpplatenonderzoek in, waarvoor offerte is aangevraagd bij DLO-Staringcentrum te Wageningen. Door E. Drenth werd aangedrongen om de profielregistratie te combineren met een proefsleuvenonderzoek, waarbij samenwerking werd gezocht met de ROB. Toestemming werd aangevraagd bij Hagens Steenfabrieken door de ROB. Voor dit gecombineerde onderzoek is een ontwerp opgesteld, waarvan de kostenraming het beschikbare budget echter ver overschreed. Daardoor kon het onderzoek niet worden uitgevoerd en is geen opdracht verleend. Het project is komen te vervallen
