Birds on Modified Wetlands in Eastern South Dakota

To examine the role of bird species (other than Anatidae) in the prairie wetlands ecosystem. Seven wetlands on Waterfowl Production Areas in eastern South Dakota were utilized to measure differences between bird communities in plots with dug brood complexes and non-modified plots. Thirty-eight species of wetland birds were recorded on wetlands during June 1981 and June 1982. The most abundant species included the red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), marsh wren (Cistothorus palustris), and song sparrow (Melospiza melodia). Analysis of variance was used to test between treatment (modified and natural plots on the wetlands) differences for the dependent variables: density, bird species diversity, species richness, and equitability. No significant differences were found between treatments for any of the dependent variables. For 1981-1982, 5 years after excavation of dug brood complexes, the effects of these modifications on wetland bird communities appeared negligible. However, upland cover on the islands of the dug brood complexes provided nesting habitat for some upland nesting species and a possible food source for other upland and marsh-edge species

When Knowing is not enough: A Narrative Exploration of How K-12 Teachers Make Decisions about the Transfer of Critical Competencies from Professional Learning to Daily Practice

School districts spend millions of dollars each year to provide training and learning to staff working in direct and indirect service to students (National Council on Teacher Quality, 2021). This financial commitment says nothing about what is even more important: the need for school employees and the systems in which we work to serve students more effectively. Despite vast allocations of time and money and presumably best intentions for better social and academic outcomes for students, very little data exist that reflect regular transfer and application of training/learning into professional practice (Nittler et al., 2015). By and large, schools and school systems look the same today as they did 50+ years ago despite the fact that the world looks very different and so much more is known about the cognitive process and contextual contributors involved in erudition development. Teacher application of critical competencies such as cultural responsiveness, trauma informed practices, social emotional learning and basic neuroscience in the ways they conceptualize and implement instructional practices may not be easily apparent during casual observation, yet they are inextricably linked to positive academic and social outcomes for students, thus imperative to effective professional practice. This study investigates the ways in which professional educators make decisions about the transfer and application of professional learning centered on critical competencies (soft skills) in their daily work. Narrative Inquiry (NI) provided the methodological frame for this exploratory study that through thematic analysis surfaced five key factors influencing learning transfer: Instructor/Presenter/Facilitator; Connection to Lived Experience; Relevance to Job Assignment; Alignment with Self-Identity; and COVID–19. UNDERSTANDING ELITE SPRINT START PERFORMANCE THROUGH AN ANALYSIS OF JOINT KINEMATICS

This study aimed to investigate how leg kinematics contribute to the performance, in terms of external horizontal power production, of three elite sprinters during the block and first step phases of a sprint. The highest block phase power was produced by sprinter B, who exhibited the greatest hip extension, particularly at the rear leg. Sprinter A achieved a higher horizontal block exit velocity, however, this appeared to be due to a longer push duration rather than greater average force production. The highest horizontal power during the first stance was again produced by sprinter B, who exhibited the greatest total stance leg joint extension. The other two sprinters exhibited similar leg extension to each other. However, sprinter A was able to generate greater horizontal power, which may have been due to his centre of mass being further in front of his foot at touchdown

Carrier-bound Methotrexate. III.‡ Antiproliferative Activity of Macromolecular MTX Conjugates Against the Human HeLa and Colo Carcinoma Cell Lines

In continuation of studies in these laboratories aiming at the bioevaluation of macromolecular anticancer drug models, in vitro cytotoxicity screens are performed on several series of water-soluble polymer-methotrexate  conjugates. The methotrexate drug in these conjugates is bound through amide or ester linkages to water- soluble polyamide- or polyamidoamine-type carriers by previously developed anchoring techniques.Tests were  conducted against the HeLahumancervical carcinoma cell line generally considered to be drug-sensitive, and  against two variants of the rather refractory Colo 320 DM, a human colon adenocarcinoma line.KEYWORDS: Drug conjugation, Colo cell line, HeLa cell line, methotrexate, polyaspartamide,  polyamidoamine
