    High dynamic range imaging with a single-mode pupil remapping system : a self-calibration algorithm for redundant interferometric arrays

    The correction of the influence of phase corrugation in the pupil plane is a fundamental issue in achieving high dynamic range imaging. In this paper, we investigate an instrumental setup which consists in applying interferometric techniques on a single telescope, by filtering and dividing the pupil with an array of single-mode fibers. We developed a new algorithm, which makes use of the fact that we have a redundant interferometric array, to completely disentangle the astronomical object from the atmospheric perturbations (phase and scintillation). This self-calibrating algorithm can also be applied to any - diluted or not - redundant interferometric setup. On an 8 meter telescope observing at a wavelength of 630 nm, our simulations show that a single mode pupil remapping system could achieve, at a few resolution elements from the central star, a raw dynamic range up to 10^6; depending on the brightness of the source. The self calibration algorithm proved to be very efficient, allowing image reconstruction of faint sources (mag = 15) even though the signal-to-noise ratio of individual spatial frequencies are of the order of 0.1. We finally note that the instrument could be more sensitive by combining this setup with an adaptive optics system. The dynamic range would however be limited by the noise of the small, high frequency, displacements of the deformable mirror.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Making a Tough Choice: Teacher Target-Setting and Student Achievement in a Teacher Performance System Using Student Learning Objectives

    The use of student learning objectives (SLOs) as part of teacher performance systems has gained traction quickly in the United States, yet little is known about how teachers select specific students’ learning goals. When teachers are evaluated—and sometimes compensated—based on whether their students meet the very objectives the teachers set at the start of the year, there may be an incentive to set low targets. SLO systems rely on teachers’ willingness and ability to set appropriately ambitious SLOs. We describe teachers’ SLO target-setting behavior in one school-district. We document the accuracy/ambitiousness of targets and find that teachers regularly set targets that students did not meet. We also find that, within the same year, a student’s spring test scores tend to be higher on the assessments for which they received higher targets. This raises the intriguing possibility that receiving higher targets might cause students to perform better than they otherwise would have

    High resolution observations of the outer disk around T Cha: the view from ALMA

    T Cha is a young star surrounded by a transitional disk with signatures of planet formation. We have obtained high-resolution and high-sensitivity ALMA observations of T Cha in the CO(3{\rm CO}(3--2)2), 13CO(3{\rm ^{13}CO}(3--2)2), and CS(7{\rm CS}(7--6)6) emission lines to reveal the spatial distribution of the gaseous disk around the star. In order to study the dust within the disk we have also obtained continuum images at 850μ\mum from the line-free channels. We have spatially resolved the outer disk around T Cha. Using the CO(3-2) emission we derive a radius of ∼\sim230 AU. We also report the detection of the 13^{13}CO(3-2) and the CS(7-8) molecular emissions, which show smaller radii than the CO(3-2) detection. The continuum observations at 850μ\mum allow the spatial resolution of the dusty disk, which shows two emission bumps separated by ∼\sim40AU, consistent with the presence of a dust gap in the inner regions of the disk, and an outer radius of ∼\sim80AU. Therefore, T Cha is surrounded by a compact dusty disk and a larger and more diffuse gaseous disk, as previously observed in other young stars. The continuum intensity profiles are different at both sides of the disk suggesting possible dust asymmetries. We derive an inclination of i(deg)=67±\pm5, and a position angle of PA (deg)= 113±\pm6, for both the gas and dust disks. The comparison of the ALMA data with radiative transfer models shows that the gas and dust components can only be simultaneously reproduced when we include a tapered edge prescription for the surface density profile. The best model suggests that most of the disk mass is placed within a radius of R<R< 50AU. Finally, we derive a dynamical mass for the central object of M∗M_{*}=1.5±\pm0.2M⊙_{\odot}, comparable to the one estimated with evolutionary models for an age of ∼\sim10Myr.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letter

    VLTI/AMBER spectro-interferometric imaging of VX Sgr's inhomogenous outer atmosphere

    Aims. We aim to explore the photosphere of the very cool late-type star VX Sgr and in particular the existence and characterization of molecular layers above the continuum forming photosphere. Methods. We obtained interferometric observations with the VLTI/AMBER interferometer using the fringe tracker FINITO in the spectral domain 1.45-2.50 micron with a spectral resolution of about 35 and baselines ranging from 15 to 88 meters.We perform independent image reconstruction for different wavelength bins and fit the interferometric data with a geometrical toy model.We also compare the data to 1D dynamical models of Miras atmosphere and to 3D hydrodynamical simulations of red supergiant (RSG) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Results. Reconstructed images and visibilities show a strong wavelength dependence. The H-band images display two bright spots whose positions are confirmed by the geometrical toy model. The inhomogeneities are qualitatively predicted by 3D simulations. At about 2,00 micron and in the region 2,35 - 2,50 micron, the photosphere appears extended and the radius is larger than in the H band. In this spectral region, the geometrical toy model locates a third bright spot outside the photosphere that can be a feature of the molecular layers. The wavelength dependence of the visibility can be qualitatively explained by 1D dynamical models of Mira atmospheres. The best-fitting photospheric models show a good match with the observed visibilities and give a photospheric diameter of theta = 8,82+-0,50 mas. The H2O molecule seems to be the dominant absorber in the molecular layers. Conclusions. We show that the atmosphere of VX Sgr rather resembles Mira/AGB star model atmospheres than RSG model atmospheres.     Non-universality of artificial frustrated spin systems

    Magnetic frustration effects in artificial kagome arrays of nanomagnets with out-of-plane magnetization are investigated using Magnetic Force Microscopy and Monte Carlo simulations. Experimental and theoretical results are compared to those found for the artificial kagome spin ice, in which the nanomagnets have in-plane magnetization. In contrast with what has been recently reported, we demonstrate that long range (i.e. beyond nearest-neighbors) dipolar interactions between the nanomagnets cannot be neglected when describing the magnetic configurations observed after demagnetizing the arrays using a field protocol. As a consequence, there are clear limits to any universality in the behavior of these two artificial frustrated spin systems. We provide arguments to explain why these two systems show striking similarities at first sight in the development of pairwise spin correlations.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    El presente trabajo tiene por objeto estudiar el comportamiento del extracto de quebracho sulfitado como recurtiente de cueros al cromo. Cueros curtidos a dos niveles de concentración de sal básica de cromo (6 % y 12 %) se neutralizaron con formiato de sodio o con tripo1 ifosfato de sodio. El recurtido posterior se realizó con extracto de quebracho (3, 6, 9 y 12 %), y la nutrición se efectuó con una mezcla de aceite de patas sulfatado y aceite de patas crudo en relación 2 a 1, aplicada también a dos niveles de concentración (3 y 6 %). El estudio se realizó empleando un diseño factorial latex25latex 2^{5} replicado, y el material obtenido fue sometido a diversas pruebas físico-mecánicas.This study deals with the use of sulphited quebracho extract as retanning agent of chrome leathers. Leather tanned with two levels of chrome (6 % and 12 %) were neutralizae with sodium formate or polifosfate. The retanning process was made at four concentration leve Is (3, 6, 9, 12 %) with rew and sulphated neatsfoot oil.
