    A JKO splitting scheme for Kantorovich-Fisher-Rao gradient flows

    In this article we set up a splitting variant of the JKO scheme in order to handle gradient flows with respect to the Kantorovich-Fisher-Rao metric, recently introduced and defined on the space of positive Radon measure with varying masses. We perform successively a time step for the quadratic Wasserstein/Monge-Kantorovich distance, and then for the Hellinger/Fisher-Rao distance. Exploiting some inf-convolution structure of the metric we show convergence of the whole process for the standard class of energy functionals under suitable compactness assumptions, and investigate in details the case of internal energies. The interest is double: On the one hand we prove existence of weak solutions for a certain class of reaction-advection-diffusion equations, and on the other hand this process is constructive and well adapted to available numerical solvers.Comment: Final version, to appear in SIAM SIM

    Impact of Cognitive Impairment on Functional Outcome in Stroke

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the cognitive impairment on functional status in patients with subacute stroke. Fifty-two patients with subacute stroke were included in the study. Mini mental state examination (MMSE) test was used for the evaluation of cognitive status. Patients were separated into two groups according to their cognitive functions. Functional follow-up parameters were activities of daily living (ADL), global recovery and ambulation status. All patients were evaluated on admission to rehabilitation unit, at discharge and 6 months after discharge. Forty-four patients were completed the study. Mean age was 66 and 57 years; disease duration on admission was 4,8 and 3,5 months in the cognitively impaired and normal groups, respectively. Significant improvement was found in terms of functional follow-up parameters in both groups at discharge (P < .05). Functional follow-up parameters did not show statistically significant difference between the groups. But community ambulation rate was higher in cognitively normal group at the sixth month visit. As a result of this study, inpatient rehabilitation was effective both cognitively normal and impaired subacute stroke patients

    Nanoscale periodicity in stripe-forming systems at high temperature: Au/W(110)

    We observe using low-energy electron microscopy the self-assembly of monolayer-thick stripes of Au on W(110) near the transition temperature between stripes and the non-patterned (homogeneous) phase. We demonstrate that the amplitude of this Au stripe phase decreases with increasing temperature and vanishes at the order-disorder transition (ODT). The wavelength varies much more slowly with temperature and coverage than theories of stress-domain patterns with sharp phase boundaries would predict, and maintains a finite value of about 100 nm at the ODT. We argue that such nanometer-scale stripes should often appear near the ODT.Comment: 5 page

    Epitaxial growth in dislocation-free strained alloy films: Morphological and compositional instabilities

    The mechanisms of stability or instability in the strained alloy film growth are of intense current interest to both theorists and experimentalists. We consider dislocation-free, coherent, growing alloy films which could exhibit a morphological instability without nucleation. We investigate such strained films by developing a nonequilibrium, continuum model and by performing a linear stability analysis. The couplings of film-substrate misfit strain, compositional stress, deposition rate, and growth temperature determine the stability of film morphology as well as the surface spinodal decomposition. We consider some realistic factors of epitaxial growth, in particular the composition dependence of elastic moduli and the coupling between top surface and underlying bulk of the film. The interplay of these factors leads to new stability results. In addition to the stability diagrams both above and below the coherent spinodal temperature, we also calculate the kinetic critical thickness for the onset of instability as well as its scaling behavior with respect to misfit strain and deposition rate. We apply our results to some real growth systems and discuss the implications related to some recent experimental observations.Comment: 26 pages, 13 eps figure

    Long-Range Ordering of Vibrated Polar Disks

    Vibrated polar disks have been used experimentally to investigate collective motion of driven particles, where fully-ordered asymptotic regimes could not be reached. Here we present a model reproducing quantitatively the single, binary and collective properties of this granular system. Using system sizes not accessible in the laboratory, we show in silico that true long-range order is possible in the experimental system. Exploring the model's parameter space, we find a phase diagram qualitatively different from that of dilute or point-like particle systems.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Following microscopic motion in a two dimensional glass-forming binary fluid

    The dynamics of a binary mixture of large and small discs are studied at temperatures approaching the glass transition using an analysis based on the topology of the Voronoi polygon surrounding each atom. At higher temperatures we find that dynamics is dominated by fluid-like motion that involves particles entering and exiting the nearest-neighbour shells of nearby particles. As the temperature is lowered, the rate of topological moves decreases and motion becomes localised to regions of mixed pentagons and heptagons. In addition we find that in the low temperature state particles may translate significant distances without undergoing changes in their nearest neig hbour shell. These results have implications for dynamical heterogeneities in glass forming liquids.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure

    Effet du sel sur le comportement des jeunes plants de palmier Ă  huile (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) en Basse Casamance

    En Casamance, les palmeraies occupent une place primordiale dans l’équilibre Ă©cologique mais la pression anthropique, la baisse de la pluviomĂ©trie et la salinisation des sols ont affectĂ© cet Ă©cosystĂšme. Le prĂ©sent travail a Ă©tĂ© entrepris pour Ă©tudier le comportement des jeunes plants d’Elaeis guineensis en milieu salin. Le dispositif expĂ©rimental comprend quatre parcelles Ă©lĂ©mentaires en blocs randomisĂ©s rĂ©pĂ©tĂ©es quatre fois. Les plants ont Ă©tĂ© maintenus en conditions naturelles et irriguĂ©s avec une gamme de solution de NaCl (0 ; 4 ; 10 ; 35 g.l-1). AprĂšs 6 mois de traitement, les rĂ©sultats ont montrĂ© une hauteur moyenne T0 (230,44) ; T1 (109,13) ; T2 (90,81) et T3 (78,125). Le taux de survie a diminuĂ© dans le temps. Il a Ă©tĂ© de 79,6% et 50,1% Ă  trois mois pour T2 et T3 respectivement. Aucune mortalitĂ© n’a Ă©tĂ© observĂ©e pour T1. A 4 mois, il a Ă©tĂ© de 36 % pour T2 et 0% pour T3. A 5 mois, les premiĂšres mortalitĂ©s ont Ă©tĂ© enregistrĂ©es pour T1 (5,3%). Cependant, aucune diffĂ©rence significative n’a Ă©tĂ© observĂ©e entre T0 (100%) et T1 (94,7%).     Ergodicity and Slowing Down in Glass-Forming Systems with Soft Potentials: No Finite-Temperature Singularities

    The aim of this paper is to discuss some basic notions regarding generic glass forming systems composed of particles interacting via soft potentials. Excluding explicitly hard-core interaction we discuss the so called `glass transition' in which super-cooled amorphous state is formed, accompanied with a spectacular slowing down of relaxation to equilibrium, when the temperature is changed over a relatively small interval. Using the classical example of a 50-50 binary liquid of N particles with different interaction length-scales we show that (i) the system remains ergodic at all temperatures. (ii) the number of topologically distinct configurations can be computed, is temperature independent, and is exponential in N. (iii) Any two configurations in phase space can be connected using elementary moves whose number is polynomially bounded in N, showing that the graph of configurations has the `small world' property. (iv) The entropy of the system can be estimated at any temperature (or energy), and there is no Kauzmann crisis at any positive temperature. (v) The mechanism for the super-Arrhenius temperature dependence of the relaxation time is explained, connecting it to an entropic squeeze at the glass transition.     Model-based verification of a security protocol for conditional access to services

    peer reviewedWe use the formal language LOTOS to specify and verify the robustness of the Equicrypt protocol under design in the European OKAPI project for conditional access to multimedia services. We state some desired security properties and formalize them. We describe a generic intruder process and its modelling, and show that some properties are falsified in the presence of this intruder. The diagnostic sequences can be used almost directly to exhibit the scenarios of possible attacks on the protocol. Finally, we propose an improvement of the protocol which satisfies our properties

    Giant Helium Dimers Produced by Photoassociation of Ultracold Metastable Atoms

    We produce giant helium dimers by photoassociation of metastable helium atoms in a magnetically trapped, ultracold cloud. The photoassociation laser is detuned red of the atomic 23S1−23P02^3S_1 - 2^3P_0 line and produces strong heating of the sample when resonant with molecular bound states. The temperature of the cloud serves as an indicator of the molecular spectrum. We report good agreement between our spectroscopic measurements and our calculations of the five bound states belonging to a 0u+0_u^+ purely long-range potential well. These previously unobserved states have classical inner turning points of about 150 a0a_0 and outer turning points as large as 1150 a0a_0.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
