The dynamic interrelationship between interest rate and macroeconomic policy objectives: Case of the United Kingdom

    Get PDF
Abstract. The objective of this study is to provide empirical evidence on the short- and long-run relationships between the short-term interest rate, London interbank offered rate (LIBOR) and macroeconomic policy objectives, such as price stability, economic growth, and stability of the exchange rate market. For this purpose, we deploy quarterly frequency data from the United Kingdom between 2000 and 2015 and adopt a multiple regression model. Furthermore, this study uses the Johansen, Stock-Watson cointegration test and the Granger Causality test in order to examine the dynamic short- and long-run relationships among LIBOR, the consumer price index as a proxy of price stability, the real gross domestic product as a proxy of economic growth, and the exchange rate as a proxy of exchange rate market stability. The results showed that all variables have the same order of integration and long-run equilibrium relationships exist between them. The results show evidence of long-run equilibrium relationship between the variables with strong evidence of unidirectional granger causality flow from GDP, CPI and exchange rates to LIBOR. The recommendations proposed in this study have important policy implications for the U.K. government. It is therefore recommended that policy makers and government authorities together with the Bank of England develop and pursue sensible fiscal and monetary policies that would aim at stabilizing both the micro- and macroeconomic indicators such as the inflation rate, interest rate, exchange rate, and money supply, to enhance the growth of the economy, especially for the period after the BREXIT decision.Keywords. Public Perception of Vocational Education

    Get PDF
Public perception of vocational education aims to provide a research-based assessment of vocational education. The research method used is a quantitative approach with data collection techniques through questionnaires and literature study. The analytical method used is univariate analysis. The results showed that the perception of the community—in this case, the perception of parents/students of grade 3 SMAN 2 Cibinong—about vocational education is good. The perception of students of the vocational program (diploma) is good. And the perception of Human Resources Manager/Supervisor of the organizations where the Vocational UI Program students completed their apprenticeship is also good.     Keywords: vocational education, public perceptio

Extensification of Excise on Goods and Its Comparison with Other ASEAN Countries

    Get PDF
The purpose of extending the object of goods subject to excise is to raise government revenues and regulate the circulation of goods that have negative impacts on the environment, health and society. The research method used is descriptive qualitative approach. Data obtained is the secondary data that can be used as a review and foundation by researchers to analyze the existing problems. The results of research and analysis are the basic consideration of extending the goods subject to excise through identification of feasible excise commodities and supply chain management, analysis of negative externalities and the purpose of the collection, and constraints analysis and multiplier effect. Goods subject to excise in Indonesia compared to the ASEAN countries are included in the limited form excise systems.     Keywords: excise, extensificatio

A summer with genes: Simple disease classification from microarray data

    Get PDF
In this article we report on the work carried out within the framework of a summer project, part-funded by an IMA small grant, in which an undergraduate student (the second author of this manuscript) developed and implemented methodology for disease classification from gene expression microarray data. While the original motivation for this study was the development of a correlation threshold for gene filtering, a general outcome of this research was that, using very simple statistical techniques (essentially at undergraduate level) but solid state-of--the-art validation routines, good classification accuracies can be obtained using relatively small-sized gene signatures. We applied the techniques on expression data for breast cancer tumour subtype classification, as well as for prediction of the presence or absence of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Fishery and population characteristics of Indian mackerel, Rastrelliger kanagurta (Cuvier) at Kakinada

    Get PDF
Indian mackerel, Rastrelliger kanagurta is exploited by trawls and gillnets along Kakinada coast. Its production increased from 67 t in 1988 ’99 to 3,493 t in 1997 ’98. Period of peak abundance and fishery was February-March while recruitment was high during December-January. Length weight relationship showed that females were slightly heavier than males of the same size. Growth parameters, L∞ and K were estimated as 286.3 mm and 1.89/year respectively. Natural mortality of the stock was 2.61. Total mortality varied between 4.69 and 9.29 and fishing mortality between 2.08 and 6.68. Stock varied during the period between 1,814 and 5,255 t and biomass between 268 and 902 t. Maximum sustainable yield is 2,239 t. Emax is 0.77, whereas exploitation rate varied between 0.44 and 0.72. These indicated that the resource is currently under moderate fishing pressure especially from trawls and has only marginal scope for further increase in production. Since further increase in effort by trawls would be detrimental for the resource it is recommended to reduce their effort marginally or to maintain at the present level, whereas effort by gillnets can be increased

Effect of different concentrations of red palm olein on antioxidant enzymes activity of rat liver

    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of red palm olein (RPO) on antioxidant enzymes activity of rat liver. Seventy eight (78) rats were randomly divided into thirteen (13) groups of 6 rats per group and treated with different concentrations of RPO (5, 10 and 15%) for 2, 4 and 8 weeks. Rats in the control group were given normal rat pellet only, while those in treated groups, 5, 10 and 15% of additional RPO were given. After 2, 4 and 8 weeks of treatment, the catalase (CAT) activity results showed that there was no significant difference (P>0.05) between the control group and the treated groups. The mean value of the catalase activity after 2 weeks in control group for 5, 10, and 15% were 1328, 1612, 1298 and 1270 U/mg, respectively. For superoxide dismutase (SOD), there was no significant difference (P>0.05) between the control group and treated groups after 2 and 8 weeks of treatment but there was significant difference (P<0.05) in the 15% RPO group after 4 weeks. Keywords: Red palm olein, catalase, superoxide dismutase, vitamin E

The study entitled “Analysis Comparison of Satisfaction Passenger Against the Service Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport in Jakarta and Bandung Husein Sastranegara Airport in 2015” was conducted to determine and analyze the quality comparison service consisting of responsiveness, assurance, tangibles, empathy and reliability to consumer satisfaction on Hussein Airport Sastranegara and Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport. This study was conducted to determine and analyze the dominant service quality dimensions that influence satisfaction. The benefits of this research is to get a general idea about the services at Soekarno Hatta and Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport in Jakarta. To determine the level of satisfaction of passengers on each variable services at Bandung Husein Sastranegara Airport and Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport

Evaluation of Tax Consultant Information System

The role of a tax consultant to support government-enhancing taxpayers’ compliance is significant in carrying out their rights and obligations, which will ultimately have an impact on the government income. There is a huge gap between the number of taxpayers and the tax consultants, therefore, the government is expected to enhance the role of tax consultants in order to obtain valid source of data and information. The Evaluation of Information Systems Service Tax Consultants (SIKOP) is a Tax Consultant Information System designed to meet those requirements. The SIKOP was conducted to determine the quality of the service of the SIKOP with the Service Quality (SERVQUAL) model, through the dimensions of tangibles, realibility, responsiveness, assurance and empathy. The research method used is a descriptive approach. Primary data were obtained through questionnaire, direct interview to informants and direct observation (observation) on the incidence in the field, while the secondary data were obtained from the published literature and related documents.     Keywords: e-Government, Tax Consultants, Service Quality (SERVQUAL
