Therapistsâ and non-therapistsâ constructions of heterosex: A qualitative story completion study
© 2018 The British Psychological Society Objectives: Little research has examined the discourses that shape therapistsâ sense-making around heterosex. This paper explores the discourses of sexuality and gender underpinning therapistsâ and non-therapistsâ responses to a sexual experimentation scenario in a heterosexual relationship. It also considers the value of the novel technique of story completion (SC), in which participants are asked to write a story in response to a hypothetical scenario, for qualitative psychology and psychotherapy research. Design: This research used a comparative SC design (Kitzinger & Powell,). Participants were sequentially presented with and invited to complete two story stems: one in which a male character suggested âtrying something newâ to his female partner and one in which the female character made the suggestion. The stems were otherwise identical. Methods: A total of 100 SCs were written by 49 (28 female; 21 male) therapists and 51 (29 female; 22 male) non-therapists. Participants were recruited mainly via UK-based email lists and Facebook groups, and therapeutic training organizations, and the data were analysed using a feminist post-structuralist thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke,). Results: Both groups of participants drew on heteronormative discourses of sexuality and gender to make sense of the stem. Engaging in sexual experimentation was often depicted as a demonstration of being normal. In some stories written by women, sex was framed as a site for negotiating âequalityâ and reciprocity in relationships. Therapists were more likely than non-therapists to frame âdifficultiesâ within relationships as opportunities for personal growth and increased emotional depth, and their stories included greater emotional complexity. Conclusion: These findings raise questions about practitioner training and whether it results in therapists drawing on narrow and restrictive discourses of heterosex in clinical practice. Practitioner points: Training on sexual issues is largely absent from non-specialist practitioner training courses, which potentially means therapists are ill-equipped to respond to clientsâ anxiety about sexual issues. Evidence from this and other research indicates that therapistsâ sense-making around heterosexual sexual relationships is underpinned by narrow and restrictive discourses that entrench traditional gender relations and limit sexual agency. Psychologists are increasingly taking up positions of clinical leadership and are looked to for models of best practice. Drawing on theorizations of sexual difficulties, and of anxieties about sexual practice, that challenge traditional gender and heteronorms, and the commodification and medicalization of sex, is important for effective psychological leadership relating to the treatment of sexual issues and the furthering of social justice agendas
Bioaccumulation of total mercury in the earthworm Eisenia andrei
Earthworms are a major part of the total biomass of soil fauna and play a vital role
in soil maintenance. They process large amounts of plant and soil material and can
accumulate many pollutants that may be present in the soil. Earthworms have been
explored as bioaccumulators for many heavy metal species such as Pb, Cu and Zn but
limited information is available for mercury uptake and bioaccumulation in earth-
worms and very few report on the factors that influence the kinetics of Hg uptake by
earthworms. It is known however that the uptake of Hg is strongly influenced by the
presence of organic matter, hence the influence of ligands are a major factor contribut

ing to the kinetics of mercury uptake in biosystems. In this work we have focused on
the uptake of mercury by earthworms (
Eisenia andrei
) in the presence of humic acid
(HA) under varying physical conditions of pH and temperature, done to assess the role
of humic acid in the bioaccumulation of mercury by earthworms from soils. The study
was conducted over a 5-day uptake period and all earthworm samples were analysed
by direct mercury analysis. Mercury distribution profiles as a function of time, bioac-
cumulation factors (BAFs), first order rate constants and body burden constants for
mercury uptake under selected conditions of temperature, pH as well as via the dermal
and gut route were evaluated in one comprehensive approach. The results showed
that the uptake of Hg was influenced by pH, temperature and the presence of HA.
Uptake of Hg
2
+
was improved at low pH and temperature when the earthworms in
soil were in contact with a saturating aqueous phase. The total amount of Hg
2
+
uptake
decreased from 75 to 48
% as a function of pH. For earthworms in dry soil, the uptake
was strongly influenced by the presence of the ligand. Calculated BAF values ranged
from 0.1 to 0.8. Mercury uptake typically followed first order kinetics with rate constants
determined as 0.2 to 1

A pre-registered, multi-lab non-replication of the Action-sentence Compatibility Effect (ACE)
The Action-sentence Compatibility Effect (ACE) is a well-known demonstration of the role of motor activity in the comprehension of language. Participants are asked to make sensibility judgments on sentences by producing movements toward the body or away from the body. The ACE is the finding that movements are faster when the direction of the movement (e.g., toward) matches the direction of the action in the to-be-judged sentence (e.g., Art gave you the pen describes action toward you). We report on a pre- registered, multi-lab replication of one version of the ACE. The results show that none of the 18 labs involved in the study observed a reliable ACE, and that the meta-analytic estimate of the size of the ACE was essentially zero

Is children's reading âgood enoughâ? Links between online processing and comprehension as children read syntactically ambiguous sentences
We monitored 8- and 10-year-old childrenâs eye movements as they read sentences containing a temporary syntactic ambiguity to obtain a detailed record of their online processing. Children showed the classic garden-path effect in online processing. Their reading was disrupted following disambiguation, relative to control sentences containing a comma to block the ambiguity, although the disruption occurred somewhat later than would be expected for mature readers. We also asked children questions
to probe their comprehension of the syntactic ambiguity offline. They made more errors following ambiguous sentences than following control sentences, demonstrating that the initial incorrect parse of the garden-path sentence influenced offline comprehension. These findings are consistent with âgood enoughâ processing effects seen in adults. While faster reading times and more regressions were generally associated with better comprehension, spending longer reading the question predicted comprehension success specifically in the ambiguous condition. This suggests that reading the question prompted children to reconstruct the sentence and engage in some form of processing, which in turn
increased the likelihood of comprehension success. Older children were more sensitive to the syntactic function of commas, and, overall, they were faster and more accurate than younger children
A Functional Role for Modality-Specific Perceptual Systems in Conceptual Representations
Theories of embodied cognition suggest that conceptual processing relies on the same neural resources that are utilized for perception and action. Evidence for these perceptual simulations comes from neuroimaging and behavioural research, such as demonstrations of somatotopic motor cortex activations following the presentation of action-related words, or facilitation of grasp responses following presentation of object names. However, the interpretation of such effects has been called into question by suggestions that neural activation in modality-specific sensorimotor regions may be epiphenomenal, and merely the result of spreading activations from âdisembodiedâ, abstracted, symbolic representations. Here, we present two studies that focus on the perceptual modalities of touch and proprioception. We show that in a timed object-comparison task, concurrent tactile or proprioceptive stimulation to the hands facilitates conceptual processing relative to control stimulation. This facilitation occurs only for small, manipulable objects, where tactile and proprioceptive information form part of the multimodal perceptual experience of interacting with such objects, but facilitation is not observed for large, nonmanipulable objects where such perceptual information is uninformative. Importantly, these facilitation effects are independent of motor and action planning, and indicate that modality-specific perceptual information plays a functionally constitutive role in our mental representations of objects, which supports embodied assumptions that concepts are grounded in the same neural systems that govern perception and action
