Noise-Free Measurement of Harmonic Oscillators with Instantaneous Interactions
We present a method of measuring the quantum state of a harmonic oscillator
through instantaneous probe-system selective interactions of the
Jaynes-Cummings type. We prove that this scheme is robust to general
decoherence mechanisms, allowing the possibility of measuring fast-decaying
systems in the weak-coupling regime. This method could be applied to different
setups: motional states of trapped ions, microwave fields in cavity/circuit

An Overview of Variational Integrators
The purpose of this paper is to survey some recent advances in variational
integrators for both finite dimensional mechanical systems as well as continuum
mechanics. These advances include the general development of discrete
mechanics, applications to dissipative systems, collisions, spacetime integration algorithms,
AVI’s (Asynchronous Variational Integrators), as well as reduction for
discrete mechanical systems. To keep the article within the set limits, we will only
treat each topic briefly and will not attempt to develop any particular topic in
any depth. We hope, nonetheless, that this paper serves as a useful guide to the
literature as well as to future directions and open problems in the subject
CTLA-4 blockade during dendritic cell based booster vaccination influences dendritic cell survival and CTL expansion
Dendritic cells (DCs) are potent antigen-presenting cells and critical for the priming of CD8+ T cells. Therefore the use of these cells as adjuvant cells has been tested in a large number of experimental and clinical vaccination studies, in particular cancer vaccine studies. A number of protocols are emerging that combine vaccination with CTL expanding strategies, such as e.g. blockade of CTLA-4 signalling. On the other hand, the lifespan and in vivo survival of therapeutic DCs have only been addressed in a few studies, although this is of importance for the kinetics of CTL induction during vaccination. We have previously reported that DCs loaded with specific antigens are eliminated by antigen specific CTLs in vivo and that this elimination affects the potential for in vivo CTL generation. We now show that CTLA-4 blockade increases the number of DC vaccine induced LCMV gp33 specific CTLs and the lysis of relevant in vivo targets. However, the CTLA-4 blockage dependent expansion of CTLs also affect DC survival during booster DC injections and our data suggest that during a booster DC vaccine, the largest increase in CTL levels is already obtained during the first vaccination
An auto-biased 0.5 um CMOS transconductor for very high frequency applications
This paper describes a CMOS transconductance cell for the implementation of very high frequency current-mode gm-C filters. It features simple pseudo-differential circuitry employing small device size transistors and yielding a power dissipation of less than 1 mW/pole at nominal 3.0 V supply voltage. Self-biased common-mode voltage designed to minimize mismatch errors, improves noise and stability behavior. Short channel effects are analyzed and simulation results are presented
Work and Quantum Phase Transitions: Is there Quantum Latency?
We study the physics of quantum phase transitions from the perspective of
non-equilibrium thermodynamics. For first order quantum phase transitions, we
find that the average work done per quench in crossing the critical point is
discontinuous. This leads us to introduce the quantum latent work in analogy
with the classical latent heat of first order classical phase transitions. For
second order quantum phase transitions the irreversible work is closely related
to the fidelity susceptibility for weak sudden quenches of the system
Hamiltonian. We demonstrate our ideas with numerical simulations of first,
second, and infinite order phase transitions in various spin chain models.Comment: accepted in PR

The M_BH-M_star relation of obscured AGNs at high redshift
We report the detection of broad Halpha emission in three X-ray selected
obscured AGNs at z=1-2. By exploiting the Halpha width and the intrinsic X-ray
luminosity, we estimate their black hole masses, which are in the range
0.1-3x10^9 Msun. By means of multi-band photometric data, we measure the
stellar mass of their host galaxy and, therefore, infer their M_BH/M_star
ratio. These are the first obscured AGNs at high-z, selected based on their
black hole accretion (i.e. on the basis of their X-ray luminosity), that can be
located on the M_BH-M_star relation at high-z. All of these obscured high-z
AGNs are fully consistent with the local M_BH-M_star relation. This result
conflicts with those for other samples of AGNs in the same redshift range,
whose M_BH/M_star ratio departs significantly from the value observed in local
galaxies. We suggest that the obscured AGNs in our sample are in an advanced
evolutionary stage, have already settled onto the local M_BH-M_star relation,
and whose nuclear activity has been temporarily revived by recent galaxy
